Which will do more damage, a 350gr bullet moving at 1912fps or a 700gr bullet moving at 1200fps? There's one surefire way to know, let's do some highly unscientific tests at Demolition Ranch!!!

@dixie_rekd9601
@dixie_rekd9601 4 жыл бұрын
@@Franzibald_ its effectively a low pressure region of air collapsing in on itself after the bullet passes through it. the delay is directly proportional to the viscosity of the local fluid (yes, air has viscosity) and the pressure differential, since the round was larger yet moved significantly slower, the pressure differential was not as high as the .350 and so the delay between impact and vortex was longer than you would expect. the .350 probably had a larger vortex more closely following the shot but since there was less dust in the air and the delay was shorter, it was not as noticable. the faster round "cut" through the air whereas the slower yet larger round just smashed it out of the way.

Physics incoming for anyone who cares Performance on impact is largely dictated by kinetic energy and momentum... 350 grain at 1912 fps Vs 700 grain at 1200 fps 350 grain is 22.68 grams 1912 fps is 582.78 m/s 700 grain is 45.36 grams 1200 fps is 365.76 m/s Kinetic Energy (Joules) = Half of Mass (Kg) x Velocity Squared (m2/s2) And momentum (Kgm/s) = mass (Kg) x Velocity (m/s) Hence the 350 bullet has 3882 Joules of energy, and 13.2 kgm/s of momentum And the 700 bullet has 3034 Joules of energy, and 16.6 kgm/s of momentum You can see the effect perfectly with the paper, the bullet with more energy penetrated harder and did more "damage" but the bullet with more momentum exerted a huge force throughout the whole 5 reams

Another thing to consider: while the smaller bullet may have more energy, the larger one transfers it easier. So while you may get more energy out of the smaller one, the target won't be receiving all of it, whereas the big one dumps all if its energy into the target almost instantly, which is why it was more dramatic in the brute force department.

That is a perfect analogy. Mass is impact, power transference, and absolute knock down, any attacker hit will be on the ground. Speed is penetration, and may leave an attacker standing to kill you before he dies from blood loss in a few minutes. This is the main complaint of US soldiers firing 5.56 in combat, but especially those on guard duty. You have to hit a vital organ, or neurological disconnect, in order to immediately stop an enemy combatant. Why our military is still using 5.56 is beyond me, it's why you will see a lot of US soldiers pick up enemy AK's with 7.62's. The problem is that the enemy AK's are usually not in good shape, and as a result are very unreliable. The soldiers are not just taking souvenirs when they pick up AK's.
@TheRealBoof
@TheRealBoof 4 жыл бұрын
Momentum scales like mass times velocity, whereas kinetic energy scales like mass times velocity squared. Higher velocity means much more kinetic energy, and kinetic energy can be distributed through many means such as friction, deformation of the bullet or target, etc. Momentum will only be distributed as momentum transfer, however. A higher mass projectile will have a higher momentum, so it will displace the target more. A higher velocity projectile will have higher kinetic energy, so it will "destroy" the target (and projectile) more, provided the target can fully stop the projectile. This is why we saw the bullet with higher velocity deform inside the paper in that super amazing way it did (I want to know more about what happened there!!!!) whereas the bullet with more mass displaced the paper more. Physics lesson aside, you're basically right, but it does depend on the situation on which is better to use: higher mass or higher velocity.
@jonahpatton8879
@jonahpatton8879 4 жыл бұрын
@@Dang_Near_Fed_Up first off you need to stop spreading false information to people who don't know any better. Speed is the more important factor in the equation of energy, that's why rifles are so much better than pistols, a 9mm 147 grain bullet doing 1000 fps isn't going to even be remotely comparable to a 147 grain 7.62x51 round screaming at 2800 fps. Shit if what you said was true then a .45 would have more power than a .357 magnum, but it doesn't. of course with the way you think, you probably think a .45 is more powerful than a 5.56. Also there are no US soldiers dropping their ARs to pick up some rusted, 40 year old AK with 100,000 rounds through it and no rifling. Especially considering that the sound of an AK firing is an easy way for our soldiers to figure out which direction to shoot, because they know that our guys don't use them. Shooting the enemy's weapon would be like wearing an enemy's uniform, it's a friendly fire incident waiting to happen, but of course they know that because they're better trained and more experienced than you are.
@jonahpatton8879
@jonahpatton8879 4 жыл бұрын
@@Dang_Near_Fed_Up also you said speed only gives you penetration? then why are the big dangerous game rounds heavy and slow moving and varmint rounds light and fast? Heavy and slow moving yields momentum which is more important for penetration (through tissue, not armor), light and fast moving yields energy, which is more important for damage, stop trying to use your "common sense" to figure out how science and terminal ballistics work, doctors and scientists have already done it and you can find their research on google.

+ThrowingItAway So, knowing the amount of energy each bullet has (I double checked your numbers and they seem to be correct), which bullet would be more effective? Let's say they both get stopped by body armor. In that case, the lighter/faster bullet will be more effective because it will transfer more energy into the body, right? But what about on unarmored targets? I imagine the bigger/slower bullet will stop inside the body and transfer all its energy into the body. Does the lighter/faster bullet stop within the body or does it go through and hence transfer less energy into the body? The thing is, if the lighter/faster bullet does stop inside the body, then there's no point in having the heavier/slower bullet. But I suspect it might go through. Does someone know for sure?

Kinetic energy = 0.5 * mass * velocity * velocity Therefore, the twice as heavy bullet has to move at least 71% the velocity of the smaller bullet to maintain the same kinetic energy. 1200 is 63% of 1912 (the FPS of the ‘big’ and ‘small’ bullets, respectively). Interestingly, 10 plates is 90% of 11 plates, just as 63% is 90% of 70%. Funny how math works... we knew how many plates were going down with the big bullet after the first shot with the small bullet.

Mexico City The leade is the only difference between a 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. The 5.56 has a slightly longer leade. If you fire it out of a .223 it could create a catastrophic pressure spike. They operate at essentially the same pressure, but one is measured in PSI and the other in CUP. These give a big difference in numbers, but it's like measuring in meters and yards.

+Astrogirl1usa Sound travels much faster than this 'second blast'. I think it was a vortex created by the lower pressure outside of the barrel, which caused the air to start spinning around itself, and this ring can travel quite far actually.This is the same thing like a smoke ring. You can see this more clearly with heavy artillery.
@astrogirl1usa
@astrogirl1usa 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Mooijman You may well be right, do you have any video links, where I can see this phenomenon? I do know the bullets, used here, are both travelling slightly faster than the speed of sound. Speed of sound at 68F, or 20C is about 1126 ft/s. I believe it is colder than that where he is, so the speed of sound may be faster than I stated. That is why I believe you, it isn't that much slower. Still, I would love to see another vortex happen, so if you have a link to share... : ) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound
@wreck_ignition7847
@wreck_ignition7847 8 жыл бұрын
+Astrogirl1usa. Sound wave would be traveling at about 1125 fps. This would put it a fraction of a second (not noticeable to your eyes) slower than the projectile at that distance. What you saw was the draft of the projectile. Like when you're pulled over on the side of the road and your car is rocked by a vehicle going by. It's not sound wave propagation, the projectile is just large enough (and as aerodynamic as a brick) to pull quite a bit of air behind it.

Speed>mass , but without enough velocity you can’t keep the energy, and you need mass to do that.One 30grain 5.56x45 bullet will go faster than 60 grain 5.56x45, but that 30grain bullet will loose its velocity much faster than 60 AND it will loose all the velocity it had.If you have mass, velocity won’t change that much.

But there's a significant muzzle energy difference too. The 350 grain loads are putting out 2800 ft.lbs while the 700 grain loads are putting out just (ha! "just") 2200 ft.lbs. So in that sense the heavier bullets are making more efficient use of the energy they have.

Wow, you clearly don't understand much about terminal ballistics, or even basic math, for that matter! This round carries just over 2200 ft. lbs. at the muzzle. Even under ideal circumstances less than 50% of that 2200 ft. lbs. will be transferred into the target. Energy decreases rapidly with distances as the projectile loses velocity, and more energy is lost as heat as the projectile deforms on contact. It would certainly leave a nasty bruise and probably break a few ribs - i certainly wouldn't want to volunteer to prove my point - but it would not 'blow your chest out your back' nor would the injury be immediately fatal. It could cause some internal bleeding that, if left untreated, could lead to fatal complications but the penetration and terminal ballistic effects of the 350 grain are going to be FAR more lethal than the blunt force trauma of the 700 grain.

Neither are good, both cause damage. Your preferences would be based on your own circumstances. Of course though you can't necessarily easily switch from one to the other in a gunfight situation or anything, the range on the 700 is significantly less.. whole lotta things to take into consideration but I can't say one is better than the other because each application can be different.

Well, no matter the weight, with knowing one being double the weight but only 1200v (v=velocity) instead of the 1912v from the lighter round, you can just put it into the kinetic energy formular (1/2mv²) to know that mathmaticly speaking the lighter but faster round has about 26.9% more energy than the heavier one, as velocity scales squared
@omardengel4498

of course it's just theoretical, there surely is more speed loss on the plain cylinder shaped bullet and also impact effect compared to that lighter round

+xLADIES MANx13 Mass x Velocity = energy. For example, a 9MM has velocity but lacks mass. A .45ACP has mass but lacks velocity. A .40S&W has both, which is why it generates more energy than both. But "knock down" power is a myth, a bullet will not knock you down. A .50BMG can rip you in half, but will not knock you down. Stopping power, exists to a point but greatly varies. It refers to the damage the bullet causes to the body to force a psychological stop and that varies by person. People have dropped to their knees from a single .22LR, others have taken 6-7 from a .223, some have taken 15-20 from .40's, .45's, and 9MM's.

Not only that but if you are trying to kill someone (god forbid) the slower one would have a way better chance as if it stays in you and the force keeps going it would do a lot more damage to the body.

+daniel wiles Not really, the kinetic energy doesn't do much to tissue unless you're shooting something with a whole lot of ass behind it. Even big slow ball rounds like .45ACP over penetrate on human targets. The leading cause of death from a gun shot wound is blood loss, the only thing a big slow round does for you is cut a bigger hole for a little more blood to drip out of. And a round stopping inside the body just reduces collateral damage, hence why the police use hollow points in their side arms and .223 caliber patrol rifles. The .223 with a FMJ tumbles through the body and rarely exits, and a ballistic tip like Z-Max violently fragments in the body.

OhioSurvivalist740 You've drastically oversimplified how a .223/5.56 works by saying they tumble. There's a lot of factors that go into a bullet tumbling, specifically the .223, which is not meant to tumble. The .223 is a much better bullet for shredding itself than yawing. I've seen more 7.62x39 yaw in gel than .223. .223s claim to fame is fragmentation, not yawing. Now 5.45, I know that stuff is notorious for yawing.
