@chrisr52013 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Definitely wouldn't have been the same without the cringe factor.
@richardbell76783 жыл бұрын
The c-clamps will work, but there was probably a purpose built tool that made the job easier. My imagination has vomited forth something that looks like two two-pronged forks joined at the prong tips with hinges. The tool is laid flat and the trap is placed on top with both springs near the hinge point. Bringing one handle over the trap and pressing it towards the other handle will compress both springs, opening the trap.

@realdizzle873 жыл бұрын
That first trap was the real-deal. If Matt hadn't parked his truck directly on top of one of the leaf-springs, it wouldn't have permanently deformed the spring on that side and the trap probably would have continued to work correctly.
@realdizzle873 жыл бұрын
@@hardwirecars I know of the "tool" to which you are referring (it's essentially the just a bigger version of what was used to "nock" a crossbow that had too much tension to be nocked by hand). But, those tools weren't commonly used. In the 1700 and 1800s, to arm a trap like this, you'd anchor the central frame-rail of the trap to a sturdy tree and you'd use ropes and snatch-blocks to give you the mechanical-advantage to pull the jaws back far enough to set the trigger.
@jimmumford44443 жыл бұрын
I think the old time trappers used a C clamp like device to compress the trap springs so they could open the jaws and set the trap. Only when it was set and in the desired location did they remove the clamps.

Hey Matt! In the interest of science: I have a hypothesis that air dried Spanish ham (or jamon) will stop bear traps or bullets better than a cooked ham.
@jeanmoon11453 жыл бұрын
Oh that's pretty interesting, but i eat jamon regularly and is pretty flimsy and easy to cut, why do you think it's better at stopping bullets?
@alexisrivera200xable3 жыл бұрын
@@jeanmoon1145 Its is not any better He probably figures that since it has less moisture content and it looks a bit more dense it might be tough enough to stop a bullet. (It's definitely not stopping a bullet any bigger than a .22 though.)
@wilfpenfold3 жыл бұрын
@@jeanmoon1145 and @Alexis Rivera, Have you ever carved a whole leg? It’s pretty hard compared to a cooked or raw ham. And Alexis is correct its also denser, less moist and behaves completely differently due to the high salt content. The skin also becomes thick and waxy. Plus I’d love to see Matt fashion body armour out of giant pig legs. I’ve worked with a lot of iberíco and Serrano jamon, and a lot of raw and cooked English and American style hams and having had a lot of hands on (or Jamon?) experience I think it might lead to some surprising results. Any excuse for all the calibres though in the interest of science?!

Sketchy AF. For sure. I appreciate the fact that this was super-entertaining (at every moment, I was scared that Matt and Brandon were about to die). But, for the record, these traps aren't anywhere near as difficult to arm and set as they made it out to be in this vid. I'm assuming they did it for the "drama" and, therefore, the watch-time.

It would be cool if Scott and Matt challenged each other in the next dessert brutality but they have to use 50.cal pistols and 50.cal rifles as their DMR rifles and maybe a 50 such as the Beowulf as the carbine. So i used to go trapping with my dad and we always boiled out trap in the same water as a ton of walnuts then soaked the traps in oil. (The walnuts were to cover scent) but traps must be oiled and any rust had to be removed. I think there was just too much rust on this one

Why the hell are people still using bear traps?
@RichardCranium3213 жыл бұрын
@@executioner_ecgbert884 not bear, smaller traps but same design. People still trap for meat and sell the furs, but in places like Louisiana they trap things called Nutria rats. They are like a giant beaver with a muskrat tail, they are an invasive species destroying the bayou which causes excessive flooding during storm season and then the ground is saturated with salt water which kills off the remaining plants & the cycle repeats but gets exponentially worse. These things have legitimate uses, despite what people might think...
