Mark 5:1-20
The town of Gerasenes was approximately 35 miles southeast of the Sea of Galilee.
These events take place immediately following the calming of the sea in chapter 4
This is the first-person Mark gives an extended back story.
Notice the strength of the demon-possessed man and compare to Acts 19:13-20
The verbs used to describe the man’s ability to break shackles and chains are passive indicating the power to do this came from the demons and not the man
The phrase “what do you want to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Highest God?” can be understood two different ways:
The demon attempting to gain control over Jesus
The subservience of the demons to Jesus
The second option seems to fit the context better
Since the man was living in the tombs, he would have been ceremonial unclean in addition to being inward unclean due to being possessed
Pigs being raised would indicate that this was a Gentile area as Jews would not have raised pigs as they were unclean
Notice the parallels between the unclean spirits being removed from the man and the unclean animals being removed from the land
The fear the townspeople displayed was the same word used to describe the disciple's fear in v 41. However, the context suggests this is a negative fear not a positive fear like the disciples
It is interesting to note that the townspeople were the ones who requested Jesus to leave and not the ones who lost the pigs.
Discuss the differences between the townspeople and the formally demonic man
Note the difference between how Jesus directs this man to obey versus the leper in ch 1
Questions
How does receiving mercy create a desire/mission to tell others of this mercy? Are there specific people you are evangelizing? How can we pray for them?
Read Isaiah 65:1-5 and consider how it illuminates the mercy Jesus shows to the man
