The OG Demon's Souls is just so enchanting.

Definitely one of the best villains Miyazaki has written, alongside Astraea. Not only a great twist over the "dude awakes old demon cuz he wants more power", but also a reflection on the themes that Demon's Souls emphasizes time and again. A bountiful ruler that got depressed over the fact that humanity was, at its core, evil, and unable to fix it, became obsessed over this idea as he aged older. Thus, he arrogantly decided that the only way to rid humanity from its own malice, was to rid the world from existing, stating that "no one wishes to go on" and dragging everyone down with his misery.

Allant is the one who caused all the suffering. He caused Boletaria to fall, he caused the Old One to awake and create demons that feed off the souls of endless innocent lives, and worst of all - he made me tragically take the lives of Garl Vinland and Maiden Astraea. So if you have a heart and faith, you’ll make him pay with his life and leave the Old One to sleep forever.

Yes. And the "no one wishes to go on" line is the most poignant sentence I've ever heard in a video game. They don't make them like this anymore.
