I added Maiden Astraea's and Garl's dialogue to the "Maiden Astraea" track from Demon's Souls. This is one of my favorite gaming moments and the track is very haunting.

It's special. The first time I did the fight I didn't really know the lore, only that some Saint and her guard had gone missing in the swamp. I didn't know what Astraea was all about or her relationship with Garl. But the music! My god, has there ever been a more haunting song than this?

I love the way Astraea says the last line. All of her lines so far have been pleading or pitious, and then you kill her ward, her best friend, her protector, and she sees your just another ravaging demon, who will stop at nothing to achieve their own end goal, so she has no reason to plead, and lost love for the gods, so now, she's vengeful, angry, but knows she can't do a thing. The most touching boss fight in the whole series and easily.

Demon's souls as a whole makes you feel like the bad guy, or the villian in a lot of cases. Especially if you choose to become the Demon in the end choice. Dark Souls always felt you were the warrior from legend, set to save the world. Dark Souls 2 did stray from that with the idea that you are a nobody from an unknown land so much so you can't even remember your true name. Bloodborne also feels like Demon's souls to me, like you can become the villian. I think it comes from the saying. "The things you hunt, they're not beasts, they're people"

@@TonyArzenta I love how ambiguous it is too. She is feeding souls to the old one, the leechmonger and trash titan are both demons who give her souls. But they are seemingly guards? Preventing access at key points to the cliffside city and swamp. So its possible they are protectors and not actually doing any harm. Then theres astraea herself, is she truly helping these people by preventing their deaths of plague and disease, or is she bolstering her defenses with, and feeding off of her loyal worshipers. And garl is a man who has fallen in love with the saint he had promised to protect and will follow her, good or evil.

The original Demon's Souls OST is such a gem, this entire fight a masterpiece of aesthetic theming down to the sound design. The theme is simple, without incorporating any extraneous orchestration to make it feel sadder or more significant. It doesn't need it. The ringing, radiant tones of the harpsichord vibrating out a holy melody of healing and light is all that Astraea needs, all that is needed to turn the diseased swamp into a putrid haven. The song, however, is tinged with unmistakable, overwhelming melancholy. it is the echoing church music of a saint, no doubt, but also her understated, unassuming elegy. music fit for the spires of a cathedral, yet spiraling up the shit caked walls of the valley towards a world, a god, that rejected it. its cycling, driving tones come to feel like a funeral dirge as you enter, and as you fight with the saint's guardian, your weapons clanging insignificantly in a corner of the vast swamp, still it echoes, as if to taunt your actions simply with its purity, is melodic perseverance. Astraea knows she will die by your hand, perhaps she has always known, yet still the harp sounds its haunting tones. the voice acting is on point as well. An underrated yet essential touch is the echoing effect applied to this, and all other voiced dialogue. between the slayer and Astraea is a vast gulf of echoing emptiness, between them and Garl Vinland is the metallic muffling of armor. grey fog, grey steel--its a grey sound that makes the world feel impersonal, hollow. yet one noise, a song, cuts through it sharper than your dull silver steel might piece Garl's armor, or the Maiden's flesh. the Golden notes of a harp, of a holy golden light that outshines the dull silver of fog, of steel, of blinding, intoxicating soul. here is clarity, here is hope, here is light. but it is doomed, and it knows it, for you are seeking Demon's Souls. that's all in this little piece of sound design, its so brilliant. yet the remake had to make the song le sad and epic choral piece and take away the echo cause it sounded weird. a tragedy.

To each his own but I highly disagree. The remake ost was much better. And the music that play after you kill Garland but before Astraea hits so much deeper then the original ost. Sorry man I know some people can't help nostalgia but most of the classic ost would not fit with Bluepoints vision of the Remakes. Some of the classic ost did not age well and this is one of them. But hey different strokes for different folks.

@@DjTittySprinklez Sorry but you're missing the whole point of why the old track is so good, and makes more sense due to the lore and the game's ambientation. The OG theme wasn't meant for Astraea, for Garl or you. It was meant to describe this whole rotten situation. The valley of defilement, a wretched place, putrid and left behind, a place where dispair is everywhere yet is a safe place for the folk that belong there and as Selen Vinland says: "I find something odd about this place. It brims with grime, but at once feels strangely pure". Maiden Astraea former member of the Church, when she found this place and wanted to save it she found no help for this, no hope, all of it was in ruins, after failing in saving this place by the power of God, by this blasphemous attempt to save such a devilish place, she was banished from the Church. After not getting the support to save this place she relied on the power of the demons, and then by the art of souls she became one, now as a demon she was able to help the people of this place. Her soul once pure became putrid due to the constant absortion of the corruption of the place, but it never got better, even with the power as an Archdemon she wasn't able to cure this place, but she never stopped working to purify the place even if her soul was constantly getting filthier more and more. Meanwhile Garl at her side. Then in our quest for saving the world for the imminent end of it, we found us in this place, and in order to advance we have to kill this archdemon to gain the enough power to get the Old one back to slumber. We kill her, there was no other option; at the end all her efforts, all her good intentions meant nothing, she was only able to mantain a status quo in order to the valley to not get more corrupted. And even after that it is known that the God that the whole church, clerics and servants praised was just the Old One, all those "holy powers" were just the power of the Old One getting manifested by the pleas of the believers. The whole world never got in contact with God just once, all of it was the power of the Old One. And so, this song is full of dispair, raw reality, there is no good no evil, the efforts of these two protectors of the weak meant nothing in the great scheme, in order to find a real solution (And even not that real since there is no evil to conquer, to defeat, all we can do is seal the Old one away and forget everything about the soul arts if we want to survive) we killed a saint, a good person, but also a person that meant a harm to the whole world just by having the power of demons. And this gets worse if you choose to become an archdemon yourself and let the Old One devour the world. So no, the original song is still far superior, the remake made this song look like a heroic tragedy of these two servants of God, and that's not the point in the Demon's souls lore. That's why I prefer the OG even if the remake wants to give a "new" perspective (And for me failing in that because the original described the situation, the dispair is equall, it is meant for them and for you if you choose to feel remorse).

@@genarovargas5661 I interpret her motivations and attitude a bit differently. I could be way off, though. I thought Saint Astraea essentially turned her back on "god" because of his apparent abandonment of man, particularly the downtrodden. Astraea's will to aid the suffering surpassed even her trust in "god" and this will is what drives her to take the Demon Soul because with it, she'll be able to offer some comfort to the lost and wretched. Had the player not "required" her demon soul, she could've been left alone in her pit and Boleteria would've been no worse off, because she's actually a Saint with good intentions. The player IS the villain here and it feels icky. So, I always saw this fight as "I need to kill this nearly defenseless woman or kill her lover to compel her to take her own life because she has what I need in order to reach my aims." I don't follow the lore much or watch videos on the subject, so I could be missing some details that would blow my interpretation to ribbons, but this is what I thought was going on during my first playthrough.

@@TonyArzenta Thanks a lot for the response! That is what I thought of at first glance, too. But as is often the case with Souls games, things are not what they seem at first. First off, there are corpses of people impaled/crucified and lit on fire as you approach her arena, and the nearby Filthy Woman states that the men of the Valley blindly follow her. Therefore, these corpses are, most surely, of the people in the Valley that didn't follow this heretical cult, and were pursued down for it. It's not clear whether Astraea actively enforces this, but in the case she doesn't, then she doesn't care about it. Not to mention the multiple holy knights that were sent into the Valley and met their demise there, such as Rizaia or the multiple corpses of priestly warriors found by Astraea's arena. I'm leaving Bito out because she was devoured by slugs, and Selen because she hasn't died -yet. The miracle Resurrection, derived from her soul, is a countersign to Astraea, and what it does is taking a nearby Blue Phantom and send them back to their original worlds, with their Body restored. Therefore, if it's a countersign that gives body to a soul, what Astraea does is taking a soul away from a body. Freke's spell on Astraea is Death Cloud, and the magic he derives is that of the potential of the soul. Basically, a reflection of the actions. And that spell carries an extreme toxicity that kills most things it reaches. On the other hand, Yuria's spell on Astraea is Relief (named Salvation in japanese), that fully restores an ally upon touch, and her spells are derived from the essence/emotion of the soul. From this, we can infer that while Astraea HAD good intentions, her actions were extremely deadly and corrosive. In addition, with her soul we forge the Blueblood Sword. Now, the term "blueblood" was used to refer to nobles that practically lived enclosed, away from any manual labor, which caused their skins to be pale and their veins to be seen. The description of her Archstone, in japanese, states that she offered her body to a Demon's Soul in order to "take away their suffering", and the one of the Dirty Colossus states that the people of the Valley offered their souls to be freed from their pain. We gotta remember that Astraea is a demon, and the purpose of a demon is to take souls from people to feed them to the Old One (in japanese named "Old Beast") Truth is, when Astraea found the Valley (which the Church deemed to be a malicious place), this daughter of nobility (possibly born from incest, for she's the Pureblood Demon) that pretty much never interacted with the real world outside the Church's doors, found the entire life she was raised in due to sheer luck collapse, her views on the world changed. She couldn't understand how many a people could live in such misery. And then, she decided that it was God who abandoned them, because in her entitled eyes, God was cruel. Not humans who abandoned other humans. It was God, she knew better. Then, she arrogantly decided that the only way to take away their suffering, was by sucking out their souls, essentially lobotomizing them. If there's no clarity, there's no understanding of one's situation, and with it, one doesn't suffer. And by doing this, she forever condemned the Valley to never have a chance of improving, for those souls will never be retrieved. Astraea had good intentions, performed atrocious acts to achieve those intentions, stripped people in misery from ever getting better, and was completely delusional on that she was doing good. And no, Astraea doesn't suicide after Garl's death because she loved him, because she didn't. She suicides because she realizes that there's nothing she can really do to defend herself after you kill her protector, so she decides to die in her own terms. Eh, sorry for the text dump. I love discussing Demon's Souls on all aspects lol, it's my favorite game in the franchise.

The Demon'a Souls remake was a wasted effort and missed opportunity. If the goal was to "recreate the Demon's Souls experience on current gen for a current audience," then they failed miserably. I remember the original "Demon's Souls experience" and it was as magical as playing the Legend of Zelda or Super Mario World when they were THE games to play. The remake was just a completely unnecessary piece of mimicry that fell completely flat. And yeah, they especially dropped the ball on the Maiden Astraea fight. So, so bad.

I just watched a playthrough of the remake. While the environments are gorgeous, some of the charm of the original is lost, especially in the sound design. Things like the *TIIIING* in Latria and the amazing music and line delivery of the Maiden Astraea fight.

Here's my take on the remake: The remake had zero charm. None. It was was a soulless copy of an amazing game and it was a chore to play, especially after how much I played the original. It was destined to fail simply because they thought they'd "bring the Demon's Souls experience to a new audience" and that's impossible for a number of reasons. The voice acting was lifeless, almost like a cold-read or scratch VO. Allant's voice was particularly flat. I also thought the animations left much to be desired and they screwed up/altered some move-sets. I just don't know why they even made it if they were just gonna update the graphics of a PS3 game. It was a missed opportunity, when they could've done so much more with it. But it DOES look pretty slick, for sure, haha.

I've played this, back in 2009. Asian version. I've platinum'd this, 3 times in PS3, PS5 Remake one. People learned about Dark Souls in 2011... Though, that's why the original for me, IS the hardest, and storywise... *I'm crying, Thats why I use humor.* Astraea was not a demon, she tried Just to give a peaceful, ending, to all these damned Souls. Garl Vinland, IS My favorite NPC, of ALL Souls series. I NEVER kill him, before he ends his dialogue. (you who kill Astraea ranged? I'd bet 1000$ Platinum speedrun, melee only, no speels.) PS3 (Hardest). PS5. I KNOW I'LL WIN.

I was watching Japanese videos of DS months before it came to the US and I was not disappointed when I finally got my hands on it. It changed everything; one of the last few dying sighs of the golden age of video games, honestly. It was the hardest, by far, and very unforgiving. I used to say "Demon's Souls (and Dark Souls) doesn't give a shit if you like the game or if you quit out of frustration" while 99% of games try desperately to earn the player's praise. I have many fond memories of playing Demon's Souls and Dark Souls; something I cannot say about most of the games I've played. The games made their mark, but unfortunately, too many game devs have hijacked Souls mechanics and just inject them into their games with poor results. Lords of the Fallen is just a way shittier Souls game, kinda like Dark Souls II, only it looks way better. But at least I played DSII a bunch despite its many, many shortcomings, while I haven't played LOTF in over a month because it's boring and derivative to the highest degree. But, I digress. The Demon's Souls remake was one of the most unnecessary, creatively bankrupt failures I've ever seen. It simply didn't need to exist, especially if they're just going to painstakingly recreate DS with it's janky and dated approach, when games have changed a lot since '09. The game was a missed opportunity and it felt phoned in, especially the voice acting. So bad. Thanks for the comment.

It's a really good remake but you can definitely tell fromsoft didn't get much if any input... I really hope you get a chance to play it eventually friend!

The PS5 version seems like completely different game in comparison to ps3 version. But I still like to occasionaly play the ps3 version, I like it more, its nostalgia. This soundtrack with the "lyrics" is just ths most memorable thing from the game for me. Thank you for uploading this on YT

I believe his use of "you" refers to society or people in general, as the Valley of Defilement is like Bolateria's toilet. The player is just another plunderer, adding to the despair and misery.

@@TonyArzenta Garl sounds just as great as the original. Astraea is good, not as good as the OG but I wouldn't call her bad. The only line she doesn't deliver very well is "Take your precious Demon Soul", for the rest she does a pretty good job. The new music is also very beautiful, it just has extended choir parts here and there but overall it is preserved well and nothing from the original music is missing.

People say that slaying Astraea is a villain moment for the player. It's not. Astraea is funneling souls to the Old One and that is a direct threat to the entire world as his colorless fog will eventually engulf it completely. Astraea has to die or millions will suffer. It's not a villainous act. In fact, it's Astreae who is completely deluded about what she's doing.

I can respect Demon's Souls for doing the whole bell knight/fair maiden shtick first. Even so, I personally just don't feel any attachment to Astraea and Vinland. Maybe it's the way I played the game the first time around, but I didn't necessarily feel much in the way of buildup. It was more like "Oh hey, there's this rogue knight and a missing maiden" followed by "What a twist, they're the not-so-bad guys." I think I'll take my feels with stuff like the Fair Lady, Alsanna and the Burnt Ivory King, and Eygon/Irina. Can't wait to see how the Demon's Souls remake will play out in regard to Astraea's story.

It's mostly the realization that God is just the Old One, and that even a Saint of the church walked away after realizing this. And the fact that we, the so called heroes, just showed up in their home to kill them. She's not like other archdemons, and is basically harmless by herself. It's a different feeling than, say, killing the Dragon God or even King Allant.

​@@TonyArzenta No lol, why was it boring? it's the same thing as the others in a different verse, It's just a matter of preference idon't find any souls game bad they are just different but they keep the same elements. BB had good lore, good asthetic, music, some memorable bosses, just some of the mechanics were bad like having to farm healing to fight the bosses and lacked equipment but nothing is perfect. Maybe just isn't your style but they are all good in their own way, suit yourself.

It isn't the worst game I've played, but it's my least favorite of the "souls" games. I played it for about 30 hours before I just set it down because I simply didn't care what was next. It's the only "souls" game I haven't played through. I really wanted to like it; I even bought the DLC because I assumed I'd like the game, but I never even saw the content, haha.

@StrawberryCalcite Liar, there's no remake with new stuff others disliked. If they get angry then they're stupid bc they know DeS it's an unfinished game. That chance of finishing Demon's Souls is gone, understand that, there's no chance to have a proper remake and no chance to get a remaster of the original. The only official way to play Demon's Souls os the PS5 version, sony closed the PS3 shop, they never ported it to the PS4 and not everyone would buy a PS5 just to play Demon's Souls

@StrawberryCalcite I've seen ppl complaining mostly about the generic remakes we've been getting recently. Resident Evil remake respects the original content, it expands it and it adds new stuff and it's a 2002 Gamecube game, a remake for a game that only had 6 years and everyone considers it as a standard of how remakes should be. If you like remakes that don't add anything but are just focused to improve the existing things with just detail stuff, then it's okay, everything has the right to like what they want, but as a remake, it's mediocre, it exists as an excuse to buy a PS5 bc oh surprise, it's Sony's trademark, not Fromsoft's and the Elden Ring example is way different bc it's a recent game, every single souls but Demon's Souls and Sekiro has DLCs and you might say "oh but demon's is recent". Shadow of the Colossus was recent, it was the same type of remake Demon's Souls was, does it have new content? No, bc BP only recreates the same thing on their style (if you didn't know that). Demon's Souls could've been more but bc of how conformist BP thinks we are, we were gonna be like "Oh, a remake that copies the same game from finish to start with Dark Souls/Bloodborne vibes, textures and musical inspiration and doesn't add anything, what an amazing masterpiece :D" No... just, no.

Not too fond of this, though it does suit the fight. That said, I would have preferred a proper fight as opposed to playing keep away with squid head and then dealing with a defenseless whinger. Still, I can appreciate it fitting and all that, I just really, really don't like these two for some reason.

It's a unique battle that breaks the mold. The player is forced to either murder a mostly defenseless maiden or duel her knight/lover to the death which results in her suicide, just so the player can increases their own might. It's dark; darker than anything that came after. The music for this battle is also unique to the soundtrack and I've seldom heard such a haunting presence. "No one wishes to go on."

I recently completed the remake and wanted to hear the original version of this song, I haven't played the original in a very long time and didn't feel like levelling a character to get to her again. Hence, here I am! I totally get where you're coming from regarding these two. I just personally don't like them for some reason and as a result I'm just not too fond of the song. I couldn't really tell you why I don't like them, the only other people in the game who irritated me similarly were the King (not false one) and that bastard that comes to the Nexus after Yurt is dead. The song is extremely haunting for sure, I can appreciate the atmosphere of it and stuff, regardless of any personal distaste I have for the two in question
