tomioka giyu is the only one who can use the eleventh form of the water breathing since he was the one who created it with relentless training, its basically a defensive technique in which you move your sword so fast defending multiple attacks one by one that it feels like still water, hence named Dead Calm, it matches his personality too.😐

An interesting thing to point out is that Tanjiro identifies people through smell, and at least by the logic of this anime, people of different strengths have different smells. So when Tanjiro first smelled Giyu when he came to the rescue, and Tanjiro's first guess was Zenitsu instead, it's a hint of how strong Zenitsu actually is if he wasn't acting like a coward.

I loved how the moment Shinobu's question of, "Sweet young girl, how many people have you killed?" left her lips, you knew exactly (based on your expression) how that conversation was going to go. Beautiful. I also enjoyed how quickly you nailed that Shinobu's just a wee bit psychotic. Shinobu is my favorite of all the girls in Demon Slayer, as a side note. Trust me, the 12 Kizuki have their titles for a reason. Rui had a lot going against him here; even though he was able to trick Tanjiro, I firmly believe he was weakened by the attacks from him and Nezuko. On top of that, we saw that he gave his blood to the members of his family to change their appearances, but it's not explicitly stated that this had no effect on Rui's strength. It's quite likely that he was already weakened quite a bit from how much blood he shared. That being said, you'll get a better sense of the power difference of the Kizuki later on, so I won't share anything else on them here. Great reaction! I hope you'll enjoy the rest just as much. ^.^

when rui stood up after tanjiro chopped his head off my jaw dropped especially after ep 19 ending it felt so unfair 😭 but this shows that even if tanjiro unlocks “protagonist powers” it doesn’t matter until he knows how to use said powers this was honestly a smart decision bc after that giyuu came in and chopped rui’s head and in that moment, the power difference between tanjiro and a hashira-level demon slayer has been established 🔥🔥

Hashira can take out the lower six of the Twelve as we saw here. Lower ones are nothing compared to the upper six. Giyu had no issues taking this guy out. But the hashira always wait until the last second to arrive. We almost lost Inosuke and Tanjiro - and Zenitsu- because these hashira take so long 😂

Tanjiro wouldn't stand a chance against Rui even at full strength if Rui were serious. His sudden switch to Hinokami Kagura did suprise Rui though enough to make him take his own head meaning that he thought Tanjiro would be able to cut it off. Which shows just how strong the hashira are and the difference in strength with Giyu killing him instantly. Giyu created Water Breathing Eleventh Form: Dead Calm himself and is the only one who can use it. It's a defensive technique where Giyu ceases all movements and enters a state of calm to deflect incoming attacks very quickly making it seem like still water. Rui is lower rank 5 the second weakest but he would have been stronger if he hadn't shared blood with the other demons to create his "family" the rest of his backstory gets telled in the next episode.

There is definitely a reason why they are Hashira & see some of Giyu's strength &abilities is pretty awesome as we witness the 11th form! 😄But you gotta give props to Tanjiro considering how injured he was when fighting one of the 12 at the state he was in he did quite well for himself as well thanks to Nezuko's help too. Shinobu is quite scary with how she presents herself & makes for an interesting character that I'm sure we will get to know more about. I totally get what you mean about loving her, Luke! I really love this episode though you really get an understanding of who all of demons that became a apart of this "Family". It really is kind of sad to think about what they all went thru. This series does a good job to make you feel for these demons that they aren't just some random demon, but have actual personality and characters to them.

giyu created the 11th form ‘dead calm’ (also called ‘lull’ in another translation) himself, all of the water breathing techniques resembles and mimics the flow and properties of water but ‘dead calm’ is a special one as its exclusive to giyu where the technique mimic a dead calm sea using the wielder itself by entering a serene state of complete tranquility so they will be able to react to and deflect, block or cut any atks coming to maintain the lull of the sea they made a fighting game of demon slayer and in it this 11th form even has a variation called ‘dead calm, tidal waves’ essentially turning the defensive technique into an offensive one where the use uses the state of serene tranquility as a cover up to flash behind the opponent before unleashing a barrage of sword slashes

Also, the demons definitely had different blood demon art before meeting Rui.. if they had any in the first place. So this really is more than just enhancing other's powers) and let him be to some extend. Some might say he only remained Lower Five because he doesn't have a need to rank up. He may be even stronger than mere Lower Five, actually.

18:12 i mentioned this in a previous episode on why there is so many similarities between vampires and demons within the series but dnt think you saw it the demons here have many similarities with vampires in general but there is a reason for this; “demons” is just the conventional translation, despite the subtitles you mayve noticed the actual pronunciation when spoken is in fact “oni” instead and yes its “oni” as in the same word used for the race that rem and ram belonged to in rezero and 1 of the evolutions of the kijins in reincarnated as a slime (benimaru, shion, hakurou etc) oni typically refer to the typical brutish large humanoid supernatural creature with horn and inhuman skin color like red and blue but it can also jsut be a generic term for a supernatural being at times under the category of a yokai which is liken to european’s faery in folklore and demon slayer’s demons has have many similarities in common with yokais which will be more apparent with future demons seen instead like a tsuchgumo, jorogumo, tengu, akaname, biwa-bokuboku etc (the first 2 yokai listed are spider yokais which the mother and father spider demons in rui’s family is based off of) which will all appear as demons in demon slayer, yokais is also considered beings of the night never seen in the daytime which would explain why the author decided for sunlight to be deadly to demons in demon slayer but lastly the word for vampire in japanese is kyūketsuki which when literally translated to english is “blood sucking oni” so vampires has the connotations of also simply being a type of oni in japanese which given the setting being set in the taisho era where westernization is is creeping in it wouldnt be out of place for the author to simply westernize a blood sucking oni too

As you guessed already, there is a large power gap between each member, even the ones only separated by 1 rank. Rui was a lower kizuki which is not an issue for the hashira.

To explain the twelve Kizuki rankings. They are grouped into the upper six and the lower six. The upper six are the strongest of the twelve while the lower six are the weakest of the twelve. Now in the upper and lower, they have rankings from 6 to 1, 6 being the weakest of that group and 1 being the strongest. So lower 6 would be the weakest kizuki and upper 1 is the strongest. And upper 6 is above lower 1. Rui is the lower 5, so he is the second weakest of the twelve Kizuki. Also, the ex-kizuki used to be the lower 6. But he was too weak to even do that.

Fun fact!: As stated, Muzan has multiple favorite demons, and the two lower ranked moons (well one is a former but still) that we have seen so far are both part of them. Kyogai was favored bc Muzan thought his blood demon art was neat and possibly useful. We assume the way Muzan showed his favor to Kyogai was by giving him multiple chances before demoting him, or maybe he even spared him by demoting him instead of just killing him. And another way that Muzan has treated a favored demon was by letting Rui break his rules of not banding together with other demons. That and allowing Rui to share his power in the first place. Muzan is particular about the strength of his demon moons and their drive to get stronger as seen with Kyogai. But he let Rui climb down a few ranks just so Rui can make his pretend family. (Rui's original power was on par with lower 1 and 2)

It’s literally an adaptation of a manga. It was written as chapters to begin with. Like many manga adaptations, you may get more than one chapter per episode, or you may get one chapter drawn out too long over more than one episode. The alternate to this episode not ending at this point is to remove some of the episode or draw things out so it ended sooner.

Basically to explain, the lower moons are weaker than the current Hashiras (not sure about older hashiras), but the Upper Moons are significantly stronger as they received a lot of Muzans blood, and have lived for 100's of years devouring lots more people. Basically a single upper moon is tougher than a single Hashira in almost every case, whilst lowers are weaker generally than one Hashira.

Don't worry about the ranks, you have already learned all that will ever be done with the ranks of the Demon Slayers. The important distinction is that there are Hashira and NOT Hashira. While our main characters may be stronger than most, the ranks don't really reflect that.

Shinobu is probably one of the physically weakest of the Hashira, but she's also one of the coolest. Very unique design and personality, and she has so many other skills which more than make up for her strength.

This is my favourite arc, but my least favourite moment. I love the Spider sister so much as one of my favourite characters of all of Demon Slayer, and I hate that she just gets killed like any other demon. She really didn’t need to be. She really didn’t do anything wrong. Yeah she killed people, but only people who came to their mountain trying to kill her?? The family stayed in this mountain away from other humans, the only ones getting killed are the demon slayers trying to kill them What else could she even do, she was running away not even killing humans, got saved by Rui but was forced to obey him otherwise she’d be tortured or killed. She just wanted to survive. She could’ve been captured and Tamayo could’ve used her blood to try and make cures for demons or anything else, she would’ve cooperated with humans if they didn’t intent to just torture her even worse than what Rui would do. No one gave her any options But my bias for her aside, I think it simply would’ve been a far better plot point to have her survive and be captured, even if she’s imprisoned, at the end of the series she could be turned back to a human too. It would’ve just been more interesting and it’s what she deserved It also bothers me so much that they play epic music to her death like it’s some hype moment, she wasn’t evil, it was depressing as hell, and then they follow it up with comedy, she got done so dirty it’s so unfair. And also yeah, her voice actress is absolutely incredible, the pain in her voice and cries is seriously unmatched for female VAs that I’ve heard, I can’t believe she isn’t in bigger roles and lots of them, she’s incredible

This episode just shows how good the power scaling is in Demon Slayer. Even though we saw how Tanjiro as the lowest rank slayer managed to unleash a great move against a Lower Moon, but Giyuu as the highest rank slayer (Hashira) basically overpowers Rui (and makes him look like a demon potato, as you said 😂). Later we'll see again the power scaling dynamics when Upper Moons come into the picture ☠️

I am pretty sure Tanjiro loosened the demon first for Tomioka... I mean the spider dude had not fully healed from the beheading... he did it to himself so he didn't die... but that does not mean it didn't do damage... he did get his head cut off and still had to heal that... his head probably was not fully attached yet so he wasn't fighting at a 100% anymore...

You misunderstood the insect hashira's proposal. She said she'd torture her so that after she kills her, the demon's sins will be forgiven and she'll be reborn as a human that she can be friends with. This leans on the Shinto religion's beliefs. Some might argue that it's not technically a religion about rebirth, but rather a cycle of life energy or so forth, but you can look up how weird religions are from someone who knows more about this one. Point is, if the hashira punished the demon enough before death then she'd count her as a friend. But she'd still kill the demon.

demons have pretty different powers and strengths, when facing the 12 it can depend a lot on the matchup but generally higher ranking are more powerful overall

I always assumed the way the kizuki (the moons) are ranked, powerwise, is as orders of magnitude. "Scrawniest" lower moon, sixth, about ten times stronger than a regular demon. Then each moon is, twice to ten times "stronger" than the previous, with Muzan around "a crapton™" stronger than the most powerful one. Trivia 1: this show always "prepare" the viewer. In the previous episode, we see Rui cutting his "elder sister's" head with the thread. Foresight for the start of the episode? Maybe not, but, in hindisght...... Trivia 2: in italian localization lower moons are "wanin moons" and upper ones are "waxing moons"
