Demonstration of Nak T-100 software for testing of cassette decks and presumably reel to reel decks too.
Website is anaxwaves.com/NAKT100/
It cost me AUD$34 using Microsoft Store.
I think signal to noise is done with knob "Noise-A(-40dB)", I should have tried it.
You add -40dB to whatever is read, e.g. -7 plus -40 = -47dB sig/noise.
See part 2 for sig/noise measurement.

Thanks Moggy. I was recommended this software after I disassembled my Yamaha KX-580se for cleaning and lubricating, but failed to realise the ramifications of removing the heads, namely azimuth. You have introduced me to a couple of tests I didn't know about, like torque. I am converting a range of legacy media to digital for portability and have been having an interesting time dealing with proprietary formats and obsolete cables and connectors. I have already had the DAT machine apart to stop it eating tapes and then having problems with incompatible S/PDIF clock speeds. It will be a relief when it's all on an SSD and I can remain in the digital realm.

A great peice of software i will purchase as it would massively help me get my decks where they need to be .

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to re-visit NAk atm. I'm living out of a van. When I return home by December I'll go over nak100 as there's some things I'm not au fait with and I feel I need to re-visit my methodology. I plan to do a more thorough vid on its usage. I've decided not to do any hifi videos while I'm away, the files that are travelling with me are disjointed and I need to be accurate so best I wait till I get home. :-(

you can extend the scale but on min 96khz soundcard, manual say that.

The app has an advance view. How do you get to this advance view (Wow and Flutter meter)? There is no instruction to switch to this view.

Were di you get the USB sound card. All the ones I can find only have a headphone out and a Mic (mono) connections. I take it you will need one with both line in and out?

I picked up a MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) 4 Pre second hand. It does up to 96kHz 24bit, has S/PDIF in and out, line and balanced XLR inputs and firewire and usb connectors. You can pick them up from £100 upwards. Very good quality interface.

Where in this small Blue Marble did you get that "tape tension" test cassette. I have never seen on of them! Very nice!

They're very old school, yes. I just kept looking for them on ebay and eventually got one. There are a few different types for checking FFWD, REV and play tensions. I made sure I got one that would do play at least. Speed of REW and FFWD is not so important, usually the specs quote so many seconds for a full rewind or fast forward of a C60 cassette.

How do you check the calibration of the sound card?

I looked for that video being 9 months later and couldn’t find it. I am curious how to calibrate the sound card? Thanks.

Can I use this software to set internal Bias?? Deck: Denon DR-M34HR
@chrismogford
@chrismogford 9 ай бұрын
Good question. Hardware level, probably not. For a particular tape type I suppose you could do a freq/level response and adjust the onboard bias level for each tape type but this is done for a simple deck anyway in a service calibration. Not really practical for on the fly adjustments

@@chrismogford I'm a bit of a novice and I'm attempting to service the deck. In the service manual it says to record a 1khz and a 12 khz tone then change the characteristics of the 12 khz to match 1 khz. I'm guessing back in the day you would do this with a spectrum analyser??
@chrismogford
@chrismogford 9 ай бұрын
actually no. an ac meter or front vu meters may suffice. It's usually just making the level the same for 2 (or maybe more) frequencies. Tapes for setting bias are usually a 1kHz for standard reference and then a 12, 15 or 18kHz section for setting bias. The bias setting hardly affects the 1kHz signal.@@dean6816

@@chrismogford ok brilliant. I have an RMS volt meter so I can do this. Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it. 👍

@@chrismogford do both signals coming off the oscillator have to be exactly the same level, in this case -38db??
