Thanks, even though you insist on riding on the wrong side of the road, you have saved my life countless times. You have become the voice in the back of my head while I ride. I have to say that you are probably the calmest instructor i have seen or known. I see and hear about instructors that loose their rag at learners because they have forgotten how many years it's taken them to get to the level of riding that they are now at but they expect learners to do it almost straight away. Some learners do well with a firm approach but others need a soft coaxing type of teaching as they are not confident in life generally let alone on a motorcycle. Ride safe mate. Back in the 80s we were always taught back and front brakes when stopping. I tend to use back brake and front brake occasionally when stopping. Interesting to see what has changed over the thirty years. I'm trying to convince myself to do an observed ride with an advanced rider and do the Advanced Rider Training, of which I have watched videos of and use some techniques when I'm on the road. My confidence is building up to maintaining speeds on national speed limit roads as I was holding back a bit doing 49-52 mph.

Although it was only 2 years ago I did my test for 'big' bikes (A2) I still love watching the lesson videos, you never know what you might learn. My instructor was a lot like you, very detailed. Great video as usual. :)

For few years I have been watching your videos as car driver. To learn how deal better with bikers. But yesterday I counted first 30 km with my Aprilia Scarabeo 125 i.e. Still alive, any scratches. And that's the bike infection. :D

Happy birthday! This video makes me feel much better about my upcoming tests for A2. I basically do everything in this automatucally. The only thing that worries me is navigating diverse roads and junctions, I think I may get tricked out at some point during my test and fail because of it haha. Please keep making these types of videos, you are extremely helpful not old when it comes to building knowlege of the road but confidence also! If Nottingham wasnt two hiurs away I would totaly try to book my tests with you!

This was so helpful. I've recently completed my cbt, but if I'm honest, I haven't been 100% confident about how I'm supposed to bring the bike down in speed to a stop from higher speeds in higher gears. I read a lot about engine breaking etc but just seeing you talk through your process approaching junctions/roundabouts has made what I sort of fluffed my way through on my cbt ride so much clearer!

I ve learned the hard way that lessons with 2 students at a time is a big no no. I ve allmost got hit by the other student, I ve avoided her at the last second, she was going straight towards my right side while I was going about 40 km/h. I was able to avoid her because I had previously rode for about 3 years a 125 cc scooter ( with a car driver s licence). Although I admire your way of teaching ( you give precious safety infos that we never got here in Spain from my otherwise very profesional instructor) I cannot understand why you take 2 students at a time and also drive in front of them rather then behind them. Still I wish more driving schools had teachers like you, excellent videos, thank you!

Yep! good demo. I am a 68 year old Bambi back to biking after a 30 year break. (Full A licence) I took your advice and had a free assessment with the local IAM. Six months later I got a "Pass" I found all the recommendations by you far more helpful even though the local expert advice was excellent. All the Observers were running Pans, Beemers, and showing what can be achieved with positioning into bends, limit points at higher speeds that I could comfortably cope with which I did not enjoy. However, I did it and now I treat every bend slightly inboard of the centre or edge of the road; and back off the speed a bit more and then enjoy the riding experience far more and safely. From rural to urban, all your advice are absolute gems. I feel safer, happier, and far more confident. After all, chasing Beemers and Pans knocks the pants out of my Honda Forza NSS 300 AD Thank you guys, we need more of you :) Phil

You give great, clear instructions and I wish all instructors were as good. I got a serious on my mod 2 for observations and I think that's largely because I'm not sure what observations I'm missing. I paid a lot for my DAS training and you've given more instruction in 10 minutes than I got in over the course of about 6 road hours. Apart from giving directions my instructors didn't give many instructions.

The other day I was stopped at traffic lights in my car and a learner on a 125cc passed me filtering to the front in front and to the offside of me. I didn't mind that but as I was on the inside lane I could have been turning left or going straight on. As the learner was not indicating left I presumed he was going to ride straight on and so I decided to allow him my normal space after starting off. Its a good job I didn't race him at the lights as when the lights changed he immediately turned left in front of me without any indication. That's the difference between a safe road user and a bad one. I could have been a bad driver and annoyed at that motorcyclist and tried to beat him off. The rider lives to ride another day but for how long doing tricks like that one I don't know.

Good upload. I like it. I've done a two day course with an ex police rider. Some things I already did through experience with advanced planning, but I picked up a few things which is great. I do this style of riding in built up areas. I ride a Mille and drive a LWB Transit van. I must be the only observant van driver (who checks his surroundings every few seconds) in the UK. lol Been riding for 31 years. I'm always aware of what's around me at all times. Never assume ANYTHING. I always assume other road users are totally incompetent. I'm usually right. Roads are getting worse and so are drivers. Ride safe.

I'm an anti shoulder check rider, the reason: dependant on the speed you are travelling by the time you have carried out a shoulder check and your head is facing forward again, unless you have absolutely 100% assessed what's going on in front of you first it's dangerous as anything could pull out in front of you and before you know it you're down(I have witnessed this first hand and almost been a victim a few times, my fault entirely for not assessing what's going on in front of me for sure, that is difficult particularly being a newish rider at the time). Personally I adjust myself according to my mirrors so lean forward to adjust my point of view and I can see my blind spot no problem, this way my peripheral vision still has sight of the road ahead, I also have blind spot mirrors, I find this a safer way for me. Nice video, I really enjoy your videos, your videos are a huge part of the reason I passed.

This is why I always tell my trainees if anything more important is happening in front, give it priority. If something DOES happen in front when doing a shoulder check, the rider hasn't planned enough ahead. ☺

Agree with all comments on you never stop learning,, Love the way Ross makes it sound so easy to ride, Concentrate @ teach at the same time! Just try going out for a ride and doing a running commentary as if your teaching somebody,,,You will be very surprised how difficult it is!

In the Netherlands I got taught to put my right foot on the ground when stopping so if for whatever reason I would fall over I would land away from traffic, towards the pavement (assuming you're in the right lane) so I think it'll feel awkward breaking with only the rear break because I ready that foot to put down. But I will give it a go!

You should put your left foot down not the right as that leaves your right foot free to operate the back brake. Much easier to hold the bike at a sloping junction with you back brake than try to juggle clutch/throttle and front brake when pulling away. Not many hill junctions in Holland I guess!
