Great video, I started riding in 1975 and never had any training, but in later years I became good friends with a Police rider who taught me so many valuable lessons one to one on his own bike, I see all the similarities in your videos, watching them is like a refresher course!

Thanks for posting, I came off my bike 18 months ago, braking my collar bone and writing the bike off on a very wet roundabout with a big diesel spill. I had completely lost my confidence and have never ridden again in wet weather. Dry and I'm 100% happy, this post has reminded me that it's OK and I need to get back on the bike when it's not dry.

I haven't done any motorcycle training (outside of Ron Haslam's Race School) in around 28 years, and this has got me thinking about fo8ng my advanced. It was interesting listening to someone verbalise the internal monologue that I have running through my head when I ride in traffic

It is a true service you provide by posting videos of your classes. Though i live in a different country with different traffic laws and I have been riding for decades I always watch your videos paying close attention as a "refresher course." Over time it is too easy to become casual about riding and safety. I did have a car come into my lane earlier this week. No contact but I shouldn't have let it be even that close. I should have avoided that blind spot. I have no doubt that your videos have saved lives around the world. In many places there is no real training for riders required. I know that your videos are the best training I have had for survival in traffic. Thank you.

Thanks for this informative and entertaining video. One of the things I most enjoy about riding is being able to maintain the balance between safety and making progress, which I think you highlight perfectly by keeping your distance when traffic is moving slowly - then allowing yourself and your students to open up when opportunities to overtake arise. Great stuff.

Thanks for all your videos! I'm a new rider from the states in my 40s and your teaching is very calm and easy to follow. I will second what another commentor said about us seeing more and more roundabout's in the US. I cringe when I see them as a rider because I know they're not very common here and only growing in number. You can almost see the panic in the cagers eyes when entering. Keep up the great instruction, we need this here, MSF courses are okay but more is needed since any kid with a fist full of cash can go out and buy a super bike for his first ride and bury himself in a tree.

I thought I would drop a quick note, I'm from the states but my wife is from Ely so I feel I have a connection . I find your training vlogs very beneficial. I've ridden since I was a kid (40 years ago), but technically I 'm just a stumble bum. I've decided to become proficient and use your techniques while I'm out riding. It doesn't take much to get a license over here, no training really, just pass a simple riding test. All I had to do was ride a straight line and shift into 2nd, down shift and stop then do a figure 8. That's it. With that they turned me loose, for better or worse. Lucky for me I spent a lot of time on dirt bikes and learned a decent amount of control with speed, but slow maneuvering has been a lacking. I don't even know if I could pass a British Mod 1 test. I've decided to ride better. So I'd like to say. thank you.

Nice to see you upload a new one. It may sound funny, but watching your videos, your level of calm, almost zen to it, has helped a lot in itself. I used to ride with quite a bit of tension and anxiety which really affected my riding badly. Watching your vids over time played a part in loosening me up in traffic congestion. The relatively narrow lanes and a bit nutty traffic patterns in your area is also useful to see as I live in the Boston MA area which is heavily congested and unusually for the U.S. has very similar narrow lanes and odd traffic patterns. It took me a bit to get comfortable on a bike here, typically most of the U.S. is a lot more roomy in lanes and much less 'interesting' with traffic pattern variations. We even have lots of roundabouts and that is very odd for the U.S. as well.

People, take it from one who knows... this is good stuff! Hey Russ, good to see a new video from you. Demo riding in town is a great subject. Urban traffic tutorials are sorely needed. Most test routes are held on such roads. Awareness and anticipation of the actions of others is paramount, whilst scanning either side at junctions, pedestrian crossings, etc. I know that while you are verbalising, far more is actually going on inside your head. Consequently, some points have to be sacrificed and hopefully covered later. Those that know will see from your head movements. By the way, Russ, I've sold my beloved ST1100. I kneeded a taller bike for my gammy knee.

I find these commentaries of advanced riding very useful, and digest much information to use to good effect as I go for my test soon. I would be very interested to see the similar commentary in a city or town you are unfamiliar with. My test is in an unfamiliar town, whilst I have visited a few times to familiarise myself with the area, the principles are identical but harder to implement if you are unaware of unusual or unexpected road layouts.

When you came up to the junction at around 7:30 in the video using your indicator is a good idea, I usually just position my self in the right of the lane so that people know I'm going right and not left. Maybe keeping central and using the indicator could be much safer, especially if a wide vehicle takes the right-hand lane next to you.

As always, Russ, wonderful to hear you and to ride along with you. I sure wish us U.S. riders would get the kind of learning opportunities that U.K. riders get. I would love to have an instructor like you to teach me. Still, I learn from you, and that's the important thing. I see you still have the Pan. You had bought a BMW R1200RT a while ago, IIRC. Do you still have that? What was your impression of that, and how do you compare it to the Pan? Over here, the Pan is either the ST1100 or the ST1300. I'm not sure which you have, the 1100? Anyway, great to see you back.

Good job with learners in tow. One small observation I'd have been inclined to make to the new guys. As you approached the traffic lights after that roundabout there was a sign on the side of the road......Traffic signal and speed camera.......I'd be watching on the approach, for idiots in cars slamming on breaks cos they missed the sign but saw the camera.

Moving out of your lane without indicating in Sweden would be an instant fail on your test. Doesn't matter if no one is benefiting from it. The law is to always indicate. Keep that in mind if you for some (strange) reason would take a road trip to Sweden. ;)
@fourcall6825
@fourcall6825 7 жыл бұрын
I use the rule that it there isn't a reason not to indicate (ie someone will get the wrong impression of what you are about to do) then indicate. It's not an effort. No-one ever died from correctly using their indicator. As motorcyclists we know that people don't always see everything & everyone who will be affected by your manoeuvre... & that includes motorcyclists & ultimately me... I'm not that conceited to believe I'm perfect.

Thanks for the Vid. I wonder if you could upload a lesson on Pillioning / the difference in techniques at some point in the future? I have seen a few videos but none in detail or from trusted sources Thanks and be safe
