I started off using the zhongyi when I first shifted to the fuji system, I picked the canon ef mount version (although I didn't have any canon glass, it was much cheaper to buy small pk, om and m42 to ef adapters instead of buying multiple focal reduces, and the ef mount seemed to have the shortest flange distance to adapt to, with readily available adapters). I found the lenses adapted with the zhongyi actually produced sharper images than just using hollow adaptors (I guess due to not magnifying any lens defects towards the center), so it may vary between lens and adapter combinations, it also 'appeared' sharper than the rokinon/samyang 12mm (only other lens I had at the time). I've ended up shooting landscapes, events and even some studio portraits with the setup, even after investing in fuji glass, the adapted lenses still have a place in the kit for jobs (especially the OM zuiko glass). Another point to add is after 3 years of heavy use, the lens release lever on the adapter fell off. Was great to hear your findings!

I once combined an XT2 with the Metabones Ultra II and my two Voigtlaender SLII lenses (Nikon mount) 40mm F2 Ultron and 58mm 1,4 Nokton. I shot event reportage and portraits and had a blast. I confirm some weird going on at the edges what appeared more like a ring of decrease of contrast . But man, that added a sort of 3D pop and special sauce. You can`t make that straight with a modern combo. I liked it a lot.

I notice the Zhongyi images seem to be consistently sharper in the corners than the center and have to ask: could it be that you slightly missed focus on the center? Seems to me like the Zhongyi is actually decently sharp but suffers from quite a bit of field curvature (leading to sharp corners while focus in the center is off by a few millimeters). This would match my own experience with a Zhongyi adapter I purchased a few years ago. Acceptable sharpness and aberrations (IMO!) but significant optical distortion.
@paulfujita6344
@paulfujita6344 5 жыл бұрын
I have the same Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 (correct me if I'm wrong) and a Zhongyi LTii on an XT-3 - I was shocked at how sharp and beautiful the images are coming out. Maybe I was expecting hellfire and brimstone? I mean, I did some mindless street shots outside of B&H just for kicks, as I live in NYC, and I just literally couldn't believe how nice. I also have a metabones, which is nice too, but it's for Minolta-FX only, like this review "apples to apples" is hard but it's what I wanted as I have and like a lot of Minolta glass. I'd imagine some lenses and combos have different sweet spots is what it is.

My Zhongyi is quietly sobbing next to me while I'm saying it was still one of the best buys for my vintage glass. I'm not pixelpeeping nor looking for perfection, mostly shooting portraits, and my subjective impression has always been that the photos look clearer, sharper and punchier than with my standard adapters, so much that I haven't used those anymore for years. With my Helioses it also makes the difference of "crop and have almost no swirl" and "full swirl". I don't think it matters but I'm using the EOS adapter in combination with PK and M42 adapter rings on my Fuji, but I doubt the glass in that one is any different. Metabones is simply way too expensive for a "dumb" focal reducer, that money I'd rather invest into a native lens.
@AndrewGoodCamera
@AndrewGoodCamera 5 жыл бұрын
Metabones is pricey, indeed. I forgot to include side by side price info.
@msandersen
@msandersen 5 жыл бұрын
I use the m42 Zhongyi LensTurbo adapter, the Metabones was not an option due to price; my research led me to believe Metabones was slightly better, but not so much it mattered; and with the LensTurbo II, they fixed some aberration issues of the first one. Kippon I didn’t see much positive in comparison reviews, and there was no m42 Viltrox when I looked. I’ve used it on a variety of m42 lenses, just to play with, and haven’t done much in the way of pixel peeping apart from some tests for sharpness of the lens in the centre wide open and stopped down; some of these old lenses are a bit soft with loss of contrast wide open, considered an asset for portraiture of the time. Even half a stop makes a big difference in character sometimes. Currently, I’m using it mainly on my Tair-11a, which to my surprise, is an amazingly good 135mm F2.8 prime (149mm f2 with the LensTurbo on Fuji) with really nice bokeh (even through the speedbooster), but then it seems it’s a focal length that is easier to make great lenses for, since a lot of manufacturers have really good 135mm. My Jupiter-9s are m39, so can’t test them, but they are plenty sharp as they are. The Helios-44-2 bokeh is nice, haven’t done any comparison with and without adapter, so can’t say if there’s any more nervousness. It is a character trait of some vintage lenses naturally, and of course some people, in particular film makers, seek them out for their ‘vintage’ character, esp as it comers to flare. Now and then I bring a vintage lens or two with me when it is nothing too fast-moving, like a leisurely photowalk. Harder to do sneaky street shots with vintage, as it takes more time and looking through the viewfinder to focus, no from-the-hip, unless you trust in preset f8 aperture and distance. I use my Fuji lenses for that.

I've been using A Zhongyi Lens Turbo II for my M42 lenses, and I've found the image quality to be excellent... I wonder if you had a bad copy? I've heard a few reports that the ring that holds the front glass element can loosen and become unscrewed and affect overall sharpness. (It might also explain why the edges were sharper than the center in one of your examples.) Tightening them back up fixes it.

Seeing if there is any news on the Speedbooster front I came across this review again and after years of using the Zhongyi on Sony Nex and Fuji I now see why I don't like it. It should be replaced with a new one. Things to consider: Speedboosters work better with longer lenses. 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 vintage are the target audience in my view. For wide angle manual lenses on mirrorless always use lenses specifically designed for mirrorless as due to the short flange compared to SLR they are much easer to design and therefore give excellent results for little money (e.g. Samyang). To really compare performance use the same subject size with and without booster (adjust the distance). Sharpness with same subject size might even improve as more glass is used and compressed to the smaller sensor despite the extra glass of the booster. Also to my personal experience and other reviews the bokeh will significantly improve due to a) introducing more softness (I have never seen the "doubling" mentioned in this review and b) the bokeh being dependent on foreground/background distance relation and with the booster you will have to get closer to the subject and therefore the background will relatively move further away, bocome more blurry. Again, there are nowadays reviews out there comparing the same lens on Fullframe vs. Mirrorless-Speedbooster at same subject size which better expose the real pros and cons of using speedbosters. Btw. Using Minolta 58/1.2 with Zhongiy (and maybe everything else) is not satisfying in my view. Therefore: you will like speedbosters with anything 50+ mm and 1.4+ F-Stop.

Instead of using a speed booster with my Nikkor 20mm F2.8, I opted to buy the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 wide angle lens. It is 1 stop faster, even wider (18mm equivalent) and probably results in less distortion.

I've been thinking of getting a speedboster for older glass. Thing is though, with older lenses the edges are what usually perform the worst so is it worth it for APS-C and image quality when all the crappy bits of that image aren't in frame? By design a crop sensor only see the best parts of a FF lens. Something to think about.

I have a Nikon lens to M43 adapter and it uses a two ring aperture control like on the Metabones adapter you used. This is not a new design, and actually it did not have anything to do with video. The two ring design goes back to the earliest "single lens reflex" cameras. Some of the early lenses did not have aperture coupling to the camera. For this type of design, use the clicking ring to chose the F-stop you want to use for the picture. The other ring actually controls the aperture blades. Open it up to focus the lens and then "gently" close the aperture by turning the aperture control ring to the stop point that you have selected when you take the picture. Of course, the reason for using this design on some of the Nikon adapters is actually to do with the way Nikon apertures work on some of their lenses. I don't use this type of setup often, so I have to re-learn it when I use it. I suppose that if I had a lot of lenses that worked that way it might not be so bad, but yes, I have forgotten to close the aperture down before taking pictures, which is a pain....

Hey Andrew, I've been debating this subject with myself for soooo long maybe you can help me. If my purpose for buying the speed booster is video related, is it worth it?

How did you adapt the nikon 24mm 2.8 AI-S to the focal reducer? Didn't you have any problems?

Not sure if somebody mentioned this or not, I am not going to read all the comments to figure it out. Anyhow..... You are better off with the Canon version of that adapter anyways, Canon has a shorter flange distance, what does that mean?... It means you can add other adapters to the focal reducer and still use it... Also, your one video shows you lile the OM 50mm, Olympus amd Nikon F have the longest flange distance of any of the normally adaptable lenses. You can pick up the OM to canon ef(eos) adapter for real cheap and use the Olympus OM lenses as well as the Nikon F lenses. In fact, for anybody considering a focal reducer, if you can get the canon ef(eos) version, it allows you to use any legacy lens, by 1 extra dumb adapter for whatever mount you want.

I had a brilliant idea of perhaps using my EF glass on a Fuji camera that I like, with a speed booster, and the 7 year old in me that was bouncing off the walls at the thought of DOF of a FF and even more light than on FF did not take into account that the image projected onto the sensor will be of lesser quality than that on FF. I mean, the booster has something like 5 glass elements, right, none of which are absolutely perfect, the alignment isn't absolutely perfect, and the imperfections quickly add up and multiply? It's like, it's great, as a novelty, a special shoot, but definitely not as your usual camera setup...

From 6:46 I think you had some typos - those were shot at 50, not 24 mm - right? Thanks for the comparison, I was searching for a SB for a modern FF Sigma 35mm 1.4 to maximize blur. But I think I will stay with my 23mm and 16mm 1.4 for now. They are just perfect in size and quality 👍

Can I ask (better late than never) can u use a speed booster on native glass to effectively make say an apsc 35mm 1.4 a true 35mm1.4 rather than say closer to a 52mm 1.8 (I think) This would mean the he 16mm would be a great astro lens

Metabones is the only brand I would consider. It actually makes a FF lens sharper in the center wide open on my APS-C camera than if the lens was mounted without the speed booster.

Thats great, as dop's often work with downtuned lenses to get less image sharpness in the corners like some anamorphics have, a cheap speedbooster Is the way to go 😊

Perhaps a silly question, but I love my fuji lenses, but I want a greater field of view. Is there an X mount to x mount speed booster? I should add I don't want to shoot wide angle lenses, it's just difficult sometimes to get far enough with a 50mm to get a wide shot.
@SteelyEyedMissileDan

No, speed boosters only work when you're adapting a larger-format lens onto a camera body with a smaller-format sensor, usually full-frame lenses on APS-C sensors. All Fuji X-Mount lenses are designed to project an image circle just large enough to cover an APS-C sensor, so you can't concentrate that image down any smaller, at least not without some severe vignetting.
