This made me laugh. I'm a 50 year old woman just getting into this hobby. I know, I'm way outside the norm for this kind of thing, but I've always been into martial arts and am 4th degree black belt in TKD, but haven't actively participate in a long time due to life and injuries and joint problems now that I'm older. However, I am fidgety and I love trying new things and I ran across balisong and thought it looked like fun. I've been watching videos so I can learn more about it, both tricks and what to buy. So, here I am, I think it is a fun hobby, but it sure is a challenge to sift through all the stupidity in order to get some real information. Boys, you're not tough because you can flip a blade, real or plastic, hell, a 50 year old out of shape woman can do that! However, if you help one another, support each other, live with integrity, and work hard to accomplish your goals, then you will be well on your way to becoming a man and there is nothing cooler or "tougher" than that.

Live blades helped my smooth out my flips and get them to look a lot less sloppy really early on not saying u can’t get good without a live blade but I think it definitely helps to smooth out ur flipping or at least it helped me a lot

well said, man! ngl, as a beginner flipper myself, i always feel kind of intimidated on getting a clone. well, i've seen my friends get bullied for using and flipping them. but, i personally think that people really can't expect others to have the same mindset. so yeah, i feel much more comfortable now because of your statements, and i might consider buying either a clone or an entry-level squid knife if my budget makes it possible. cheers!

i think one of the BIGGEST problem with Clone, is when a balisong uses an element of another balisong, and everyone would call it "clones" whenever theres an aluminium bali, everyone says its Squid Clone. everytime someone use 3 pattern line on the neck of the handles, they call it BRS clone. anytime theres G10 over Ti Liner balisong, they call it Rep Clones.

I don’t think people understand that, in todays day in age, those clones have replaced CCCs. Still won’t be as good. Or have as much work put into them. But that’s the thing. You’re paying for an American product and supporting a maker you like, for a superior product. You pay a premium. Way I see it is, it’s out of my control, not my problem. The balisong community has essentially been my second home for the last 6 years. I couldn't agree more tbh. The community has grown immensely within that time and with that has come several more perspectives. As time goes on, I think it's essential that we grow with the times and are more open and understanding towards those who cannot afford or obtain certain original products or live blades. Gatekeeping is far too prominent within this community and some people need their egos checked.

Ok I hate to be *that* guy but I wanna say something. First off, I agreed with most of your points (and solid video overall btw, nice work 👊😎) but I do disagree with most of what you said about clones. Number one, intellectual property theft sucks, it's lazy, easy, and scummy. A maker's perspective is much different than a buyer's and being angry at someone for stealing your stuff is pretty understandable. Second, clones absolutely do harm people. My Icarus design was stolen before I even made the first full prototype... It has hurt my image and Theone is profiting off my *close to a year* of work before I am! That majorly sucks. You're right that people freaking out about clones is dumb, but just because loud weirdos are anti-clone doesn't mean that represents the whole group. As for majorly hating on clone makers, I don't support hate on anyone, but they are all pathetic thieves who don't care about this community or what's right, so I have no sympathy for them and don't think they should be supported by the community at all. With their resources and experience, they could quite easily make their own designs and yet they choose not to. Anyways, short version: I think clones shouldn't be supported (nor clone makers in any way), but I also think no one deserves hate for buying what they can afford, or not knowing any better. THUS! Buy clones if it's your only option, but stop if you really care about the community and supporting the makers in it. I could write more but holy crap I spent way to long on this I need to go get a life 😅. Anyways, no hate on you man, and have a great day 👊😎

i think it really goes on a person by person basis, atleast imo, your situation was infinitely different compared to other makers, you got it worse 100%, youre not making side by side profit with the clone existing, they quite literally profited on your design while you make nothing. the whole "its doesnt hurt anyone" refers to balis actually being made and sold, ie, it doesnt hurt their wallets, theyll still sell out regardless. every one of squids products is cloned, all of em, but yet theyre still going to sell out every drop, people know the difference between clone and real thing, in terms of quality and or flippability, and in a lot of cases, from personal experience and people ive talked to over the years, clones are a cheap way to get you in and a good way to get you motivated to get the real deal down the line, my first clone was a rep clone, that was my dream knife for a while, and now ive had more than 10 reps go in and out of my collection. how a bali looks is really really important to newer flippers, so even if they can afford lets say, a mako, theres still a decent chance theyll grab an ex10 clone, or a chab clone, or a rep clone, as that look is what they dream to achieve.

@@DJEyelessPyro Oh yeah I totally agree that clones are at least good for introducing people into the hobby, I owned a naut clone as my first real bali, but I think saying that clones don't harm the companies at all, and thus they are ok, isn't really a good argument. I say it's ok to buy a clone if that's all you can afford or if you're new to flipping, but those are the only scenarios where it's ok in my eyes (aside from *maybe* curiosity and mod practice), but I think if you just skip clones and go straight to either makos or tritons you'd be in a better spot than if you spent $100 on two clones. Overall, it's a sticky grey area imo. There's some good things about it, but people tend to use the good things to justify the fact that they're buying stolen items. I think people just need to accept that when they buy a clone, they're being a bit scummy, but that the flack they get is part of the price that comes with buying a clone. Idk maybe I'm a pessimist or something lol, but that's how I see it

I definitely see where you're coming from, and jack's also correct, your particular situation was very unique and while it's very unfortunate that you got screwed pretty hard, that situation is not indicative of what it's like for most other makers and clones. And you're right the loud anti clone weirdos absolutely do not represent the group as a whole, but since they are some of the loudest they are a big reason why this community is looked at in such a negative light. I agree with a lot of the points made in this video, especially the trainer points. One thing I do have to say about trainers though is the people that ignore a bite handle and hit the blade constantly when saying things about how good they are just kind of makes me a bit upset. I also think that the only thing wrong with clones is when people try to trick other people into thinking it is the real thing or when someone looking for the real thing buys a clone. I would love to hear your honest opinion on those as that is the general bases I stand on.

I notice it too when people who exclusively flip trainers end up ignoring the bite/safe handle difference, it peeves me slightly too, but if all they flip is trainers I guess it really doesn't matter, I just hope they're careful if they ever get a live blade lol. And yeah trying to sell off a clone as the real thing to the uninitiated isn't cool. But thankfully the community is pretty quick to point out what's a clone and what isn't. And That's why I like clones like the chab and orca clones or one's that change the design and remove logos so it's very easy to tell the difference, and it's why I don't agree with the clones that are still basically counterfeits such as the baliplus one's that still use the original knifes logo, that isn't cool and I don't support those.

@@DenDenBMX facts. I'm fairly new to balisong flipping and I don't ever plan on using a live blade (for several reasons) tho if your comfortable using one that's great! My opinion on trainer vs live is what ever floats your boat. Live blades can be better for someone or trainers can be better for them, to each there own. But I hate when people ignore the bite handle. I always flip as if it was a live blade, I pay attention to the safe and bite handles. It peeves me the same way as when people will point firearms around and say 'its not loaded'. Learning proper restraint, techniques, and responsibility for thing can make you better at those things and even help to improve skills that are used for other things outside of just flipping.

Just started flipping, I'm just learning on a nabalis g10 with a kraken clone on it's way 😂 at a tenth the price of the real thing shipped to my country I'm not regretting it. It's the only way anyone on a budget can get into real balisongs as you stated. Maybe if I advance to an intermediate flipper I may look into something higher quality but to drop 400 on a hobby that you may not continue in 6 months is craziness imo

Agreed with pretty much everything in this video, this community would be so much better if people would just be nice and more supportive about newcomers and just flippers in general. IMO i own legit balisongs and i own clones, while yes I agree that you should support the original creators, it kinda shows when you can buy a clone for a 1/3 of the price for pretty much 80% of the experience you would get with an original balisong. Now if the chinese companies can do all original designs like TheOne did with the alien and the falcon, it would be better off and people would be more accepting of it. But hey thats what i think. Hi , you are absolutely right . Some countries will confiscate ur products and even get you in court if ur unlucky ... Shipping to moste europe countrys is 80EURO OR SOMETIMES EVEN MORE We spend almoste more money on shipping than the actual balisong... also not everyone has the oppurtunity or money to get one of these knives/trainers in hand Way to high demand way to low supply. and aslong as they dont make a better/ more efficient way of producing these balis OR try and set up shop in europe , the clones will be a better buy until then

I agree with your take on the anti trainer crowd, they gotta take the stick out their asses. But not fully with the clone take, i agree that the anti clone folks are wayyy too angry at a non existent problem and the people buying clones will realistically never buy the real knife. But at the same time if I made something and someone else copied it I'd still be upset. If clone companies dedicated their time to making original balisongs and kept the same price or hell even made then $20 more expensive I'm positive they'd make more money since not only would the cease of clone production please 'the council' but also offer more original and (relatively) cheap options for people.

9:47 If you're referring to the Tay Flipper, that's a one person operation and it's actually crazy good for what it is, at least in my opinion. So the prize kinda makes sense there. What I don't understand is the fucking Orca Trainer going for over 300 bucks and people shit on squid for selling a 45$ plastic balisong trainer, I do not care that JK is also a one man operation which the people in this community vew as a fucking god, G10 and titanium should not be going for over 300, and that's if you live in the US, if you live in the EU you might have to pay a hundred dollars more if your country has taxes and that's not mentioning shipping that's not gonna take upwards of 16 fucking weeks just to reach you. I love and hate this hobby, creators like you and Will are the reason I don't fully hate the community. Thanks for the awesome content.

I was just referring to the trend of $100 and up plastic trainers like the pewdiepie squiddy, the tay flipper and the zippy at least justfity their prices by having some pretty wild features and designs. I think the most egregious one is the orca trainer, there's a pretty ridiculous "hypebeast" or "ego" tax on all of jk's products, but that one is just funny honestly

As a guy that collects all manner of knives, these are repeating themes. The subject might change but the attitude doesn't. I can't count the number of times someone asks for a budget friendly folder just to be met with the ole tried and true, "just save up and buy a real knife, you'll regret buying anything under (insert random monetary amount here)". I have a Shirogorov that cost me $800 after shipping, tax and whatnot. I then sent it off to get $200 bucks worth of custom work done. So I'm $1,000 into this knife, and wouldn't you know, it doesn't cut any better than my $35 QSP Penguin. Knife jackasses gonna be jackasses no matter what.

Clones literally are the only reason I'm getting into this hobby. Tried once like 4 years ago but couldn't find any decent balisong to get for an actual decent price, cause man, even 100 dollars is overpriced for a little knife that swings around. Take into account that you need to wait weeks or months just to order one and that taxes and shipping are between half and the entire price of the knife, meaning you have to pay between 1.5 to 2x the actual price, and you just turned me away from the hobby. Which is what happened the first time around I tried to get into it, but now I easily bought a 50 dollar trainer off of aliexpress and paid 10 more dollars for shipping, way cheaper than getting the real thing. So Idk man, how does it hurt that people are able to get good balisongs for cheap even though they're not as good as the real thing and because the real thing gets sold out within seconds?

I know in the gaming mouse community, there's so many clones, but most people don't care as long as it's affordable, good quality, and it actually works. I completely agree, the balisong community is dumb as all hell when it comes to the anti-clone people. Points that don't make sense are purely their fee fees. Though there are legitimate reasons not to buy clones and other things like the falcon, specifically due to the exploitation of the people who make them.
