Denel AH-2 Rooivalk - Super combat helicopter from South Africa

The Denel Rooivalk (previously designated AH-2 and CSH-2) is an attack helicopter manufactured by Denel Aviation of South Africa. Development of the type began in 1984 by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation, its development is closely connected to the Atlas Oryx transport helicopter, both aircraft being based on the Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma and having started development at the same time.

It didn't get any export customers because of cost! When it came out the Rooivalk was the most expensive gunship in the world for the next three decades! Even today,the cost of one Rooivalk will get you two Apache helicopters.

@@marks238 Yes, that would be the direct translation from Afrikaans ("rooi" is "red" & "valk" is "falcon"). It's probably from Grootrooivalk (Greater Kestrel) or Kleinrooivalk (Lesser Kestrel) - not quite sure why there's a greater and lesser, but nothing inbetween though 😅. Technically then, "Red Kestrel" would probably be more correct.
