Alanoud AlThani Your obviouslynot noticing how they are pointing out how bright her face AND eyes shine up when she's smiling. Sure there's a light right up above her but that doesn't take away the fact that she has soooooo much fun being up on stage, reading out her poetry. When she smiles, her eyes light up (metaphorically).

As a Linguistics major I find this fascinating. As a person I find this beautiful. This is such a wonderfully poetic spin on the subject of accents. Society, thanks to stereotype and stigma, has taken such an offense against those who don't "suit" the English tongue. They seem to forget that we all carry accents in some shape or fashion. They're nothing to be ashamed of. If anything, one should take pride in the tune of their motherland being carried on the notes of their speech. It's something wholly your own, something that tells others a piece of your story without ever having to be explained.

Thank you so much for this. I'm tearing up as we speak. When I was a stupid teenager around 14-15, I was embarrassed by my mother's accent. We live in a spanish speaking country but when we traveled and she had to speak English, I hated it. Now I love it and respect it because her accent represents our culture. I don't have a strong accent when I speak English but when people hear her speak, they know where I'm coming from.

*_ACCENTS_* my mom holds her accent like a shot gun with two good hands; her tongue all brass knuckle slipping in between her lips. her hips are all laughter and wind-clap. she speaks of sanchoco; of spanish and engilsh pushing up and against one another in rapid fires. see, there is no telling my momma to be quiet, my mama don't know, _"quiet."_ her voice is one size better fit _all_ . and you best not tell her to hush, she waited too many years for her voice to arrive to be told it needed housekeeping. see, english sits in her mouth remixed. so strawberry becomes: _el strawberry_ and cookie becomes: _el cookie_ and kitchen, key chain, and chicken all sound the same... my mother doesn't say yes, she says: *_aha!_* and suddenly the sky in her mouth becomes a Hector Lavoe song. her tongue can't lay itself down enough for the english language. it got too much hip, too much bone, too much conga, too much cuatro to two step; got too many piano keys in between her teeth, it got much clave, too much hand claps, got too much salsa to sit still. it's being an anxious child, wanting to make play-dough out of concrete. english be too neat for her kind of wonderful. her words spill in conversation between women who's hands are all they got; sometimes our hands are all we've got. and accents that remind us that we are still bomba, suplena; you say: *wepa!* *_wepa!_* you say: *wepa!* *_wepa!_* _and a stranger becomes your hermano_ you say: *dale!* *_dale!_* and a crowd becomes a family reunion. my mother's tongue is a telegram from her mother decorated with the coqui's of el campo so even when her lips can barely stress themselves around english _her accent is a stubborn compass_ _always pointing her towards home_

My mom isn't Spanish, but she never finished school so her vocabulary includes a lot of slang and simple words. But she always speaks with pride and strength even when she stutters. It can be weird when I bring friends over because they are so used to my clean, mature speech that they are thrown for a loop when they meet my mom. I could never be embarrassed of her though and I'm glad other people other people think the same way. Love you guys 💖💖💖💖💖💖

When my friends came to meet my mother and my father: My father: "Hello, Emmett's friends!" My mother: "Hai portato amici sopra conoscendo la casa era ancora sporco?!" ("Did you bring friends over knowing the house was still dirty?!") Me: "Si, ma a loro non importa, Mama." ("Yes, but they do not care, Mama.") (This is where I went wrong...) Mother: **smacks me dead in the face** "Ottenere il culo al lavoro! Adesso!" ("Get your ass to work! Now!") Me: **rubbing my cheek** "Va bene... Mi dispiace..." ("Okay... I'm sorry....") My friends didn't come over for months after that because they were scared of her Italian wrath...

Italian wrath?

Denice, you never fail to make me wish that I had met my grandfather's family. He died while my father was young and as a result my family lost all our Latina heritage. My white grandmother never learned Spanish and my father got enough genes from her side that most people assume he is white. He chose to go pretend that he was and left what little of the culture he know behind. When I watch your poetry I am reminded that I never got to connect to the language my family forgot.

Spanish is my mother tongue. I learned English at school. After school I migrated to Germany on my own. I learned German and it has almost completely taken over me. But I have an accent. Just as I have an accent when I speak English. Because I read and hear it all the time but I don't speak it anymore. In Spanish I forget the words. I don't speak it too often. So I am all accent. Accent has been for many years now, the obvious sign that there's no language I really own. And I have felt so inadequate in that place; not owning any of these languages; not moving invisibly and smoothly in them. It bothers me to be this visible. It touches me deeply (I'm bawling right now) how much love for your mom and her accent you show in this poem and in your performance. Your love for her and her accent makes me notice how much pain I feel because of my accent. It makes me realize that maybe the people in my life love my accent in ways I am not able to. This mixture of love and self-hate make it all really weird. I hope I am not all over the place here. I guess you just touched something really complex for me. Thank you.

Thank you!! You have made my day! I really hope that my daughter, who is now 10, grows up to feel the same way about me, as you feel about your mother.. As of now, she feels the pressure to hide her heritage at school, because of the community in which we live; I try my best to teach her pride, and to highlight so many amazing Hispanic female role models that we have around us; I am EXPECTING ALL MY TEACHINGS TO SOON SINK IN TO HE LITTLE BRAIN.

Aplauso! Im puertorrican, born and raised. Today a cooworker said hey, i want you to listen to a poem from my favorite poem writer. It is called accent. (im puertorrican and my english has an accent and i love it bc its like my presentation card it let everybody know where im from) so i start listening and when i heard the aja!, the wepa!, the dale!, the plena, salsa, bomba, el cuatro, i said is she puertorrican? So i kept listening and as soon as i heard my beloved Coquí that i miss so much i said yeap she is puertorrican, no doubts. This poem gives me the chills and makes my eyes watery. I appreciate you writing this. A mi esposa le encanto tambien. Muchas gracias! Saludos.

THis is so amazing and beautiful! I have a friend that just moved here from Puerto Rico and her accent is very thick but she is so sweet that she just doesn't let it get in the way of her fun, but it really says something if I can admit to being jealous of her accent when i don't have one and our mothers are from the same place.

I can't stop listening to this. This is beautiful. Latin, Arab, anything. If this doesn't make you think of mom and tear up, nothing will.

Beautiful performance and poem. If I were an English teacher I'd add this to the curriculum. One of my new favorite poems!

I just wanted to say that this made me think of my mom. I'm not Hispanic. I'm white. I don't speak any Spanish. I only speak English. I felt the love in this for your mom that I feel for my mom. I love it. Even though we are not the same I appreciate it. I understand you.
