Laps led: 1003 out of 1031 laps in total. That's 97,3% of all laps that season. Still the record. Second on this list is the 2014 Mercedes which led 978 out of 1134 laps that season, or 86,2%. The MP4/4 is also the only car out of two to lead more than 1000 laps in a single season. The all-time record is the 2016 Mercedes which led 1055 laps. Naturally, there were 1268 laps to race that season translating to a 83,2% laps led. There were 21 races in 2016 compared to 16 in 1988...

Yeah, my initial impression was that the MP4/4 was GM’s design until I saw that interview with Steve. I don’t honestly think there’s any plausibility to GM’s claims anymore; multiple McLaren engineers have even vouched for Steve in writing. Not to say GM is without doubt a brilliant engineer but yeah.. It’s easy to see the benefit of why he’d want to take full credit for the MP4/4.

RBR can definitely win all the races this year, but I still think they will not. Something is bound to go wrong at one of the 22-ish races: a bad pit stop at a race where Verstappen is not leading by 20 seconds, a tyre failure, strangely timed safety car, etc.

Yeah, you're right. A 100% win record in a season is something that will most likely never happen. Then again, I'm pretty sure people thought that a 100% podium finish in a season was impossible until Michael Schumacher did it in 2002. So who knows?

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Mind you, where F1 is concerned, the 1980's and very early 1990's was the golden period of the sport for me. I started watching in 1984 and didn't stop until around 2000. Due to it getting too petty and technical, in my opinion that is. Alboreto and Berger winning at Monza in 1988 was fate. Due to the passing of Enzo Ferrari. Mansell hadn't even finished a race at that point in 1988.

Regarding the drop score rules: all drivers knew very well how the point system worked, before they got in their cars the first time. Maybe this rule was outdated, as skipping races was less common in the late 80s, though bad reliability generally masked the concerns (Up to this point at least). But anyways, both Senna and Prost knew exactly what were the conditions for becoming champion that year.

Arguably the best point to be made is Irvine for 1999. Under the current points system he'd have won (in fact at the penultimate round, making the rescinded DSQ the championship decider), the same under the 2003-2009 system. He'd also have won on the 1961-90 system (not accounting for "best x of y results" rules) as reducing Häkkinen's "lead" by a point would have meant Schumacher'd have handed Irvine 2nd place at the final race to clinch the title by a single point. Interestingly though, Schumacher would have secured the 1997 WDC under current points by finishing 2nd in Jerez and wouldn't have needed to risk the crash - and conversely, had the crash still happened, Villeneuve couldn't have let Häkkinen & Coulthard past near the end to keep his chances alive. On a darker note, under the current system in place since 2019 with an extra point for FL, Ickx would have overtaken Rindt at the very last race to clinch the title in 1970. The tragic story of a posthumous champion and a runner-up never to get a better shot at it again is more touching than a season unsung by an untimely death and a topnotch driver securing the title against a dead man.

I'm kind of on the fence about this. On the one hand it would be nice to see for the historical achievement, just like Michael finishing on the podium and completing every lap in 2002. But on the other it would be nice to see someone else win It was rumoured that the reason Senna had to conserve fuel was because he was suckered into it by Prost who turned up his engine knowing it wasn't going to finish, and because Senna had to beat Prost he went faster and then had to back off later It was a similar story in Monaco earlier that year. Senna didn't need to trade fastest laps with Prost he was never going to be caught, but he did it anyway and that ultimately caused his crash after Ron Dennis had told him to slow down and this disturbed his rhythm Had he actually won those two races he would have had the overall points lead and there would be no debate over who should have the title that year

Imho, if Max keeps up his unbelievable streak, we are in for something special. The RB19 isn't as OP as the MP4/4 was compared to the other cars on the grid, but in Verstappen's hands, that car looks a lot more OP than it actually is, just look at where Perez is. Max is doing the exact same thing he did 10 years ago in karting: win every event he parttakes in. You can call me a Verstappen-fanboi if you want, but point remains.

I believe the fuel capacity issue with Berger could be down to temperature? Fuel (as with most things) expands and contracts as temps rise and fall, whereas the mass doesn’t change, which is why fuel is measured in weight in modern racing and in the regs. There’s also rules around the temps fuel can be stored/dispensed at, to stop teams super-cooling their fuel to fit more in and/or run smaller tanks.
@F1Krazy
@F1Krazy Жыл бұрын
Regarding the fuel issues, liquids are denser at colder temperatures. If you cool the fuel down, you can fit more of it into a same-size tank. It wouldn't surprise me if Ferrari and Arrows had fuel tanks that could store exactly 150L at room temperature, but then they cooled the fuel down so they could fit (say) 152L into it. From there, my assumption is that the scrutineers warmed the fuel up a bit (or it warmed up naturally as the process dragged on), and suddenly, hey presto, the cars met the regulations. This was all perfectly legal at the time, but nowadays there are limits on how much colder the fuel can be compared to the ambient temperature. As for Schlesser, I'd like to offer an addendum: some years later, he met Ron Dennis at the Monaco Grand Prix and was introduced as "the man who ruined my life and our perfect record back in '88". Schlesser replied, "No, I made you, because what happened that day kept you hungry". Legendary response.

Senna wouldn't have been too narked because he knew that the championship was between him and Prost, but whereas most drivers would probably be seething at losing out on those extra points, I have a suggestion as to why he wasn't. From what I've heard, he was a very spiritual man. I don't necessarily mean religious - frankly I don't have a clue about his feelings on the subject. But seeing the Ferraris win at the first Italian event after Enzo's death, I think he would have seen it as "meant to be", even "right". He knew that he and Prost would leave the Ferraris standing through the rest of the year, so I surmise (it is only that) he actually was at peace with the idea. That was one heck of a race, though. Tbh, it's one of the few that truly stand in my memory of that year. It was a long time ago. I should know, I got married that September on my 23rd birthday!

Red Bull have won 17 of the last 18 races (so in essence, they've already 'broken' that 15 out of 16 record) and are on a 8 race win streak. They need 3 more consecutive wins to equal McLaren's record of 11 straight wins, and one more than that to equal McLaren's record of winning the first 11 races of the season.

Mansell gave an interview a few races into the 1988 season and he said that he would be improving his golf that season, due to the naturally aspirated Judd engine of his Williams not being able to compete with the Turbocharged cars of the other top teams. He knew that things would be changed the following season. Which it did as he joined Ferrari, and even won the first race of the 1989 season in Brazil. It wouldn't get any better though, apart from in Hungary.......

Fuel tank could've expanded due to heat from engine (and a bit from actual heat), which made it appear to be able to carry more fuel. I guess, that was most probable reason. After it has cooled down it has contracted to real maximum volume.
@TheMur28
@TheMur28 Жыл бұрын
And the temperature of the fuel would also effect volume, which is why F1 now measures/mandates fuel loads in weight rather than volume.
@tduke9882
@tduke9882 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the fuel measurements, it's worth considering that fuel expands and contracts with changes in temperature and, to some extent, pressure. Although I'm unsure if this alone would account for the level of variation being discussed, it is a plausible factor to consider. In modern Formula 1, for example, weight measurements are used for fuel rather than capacity to eliminate this type of variation. I vaguely recall an issue in a certain race series (not certain if it was Formula 1) where they would chill the fuel at the start of the race to fit more into the tank. However, if there was a delay in starting the race, the fuel would warm up in the tank, potentially causing the tank to rupture due to increased pressure
@tduke9882
@tduke9882 Жыл бұрын
so I did some quick maths. Although there is a lot of variables 150l with a temprature delta of 20c would change the volume by just under 3l The coefficient varies depending on the type of fuel, but for gasoline, it is typically around 0.00096 per degree Celsius. Using this coefficient, we can calculate the volume change as follows: Volume change = (Coefficient of expansion) * (Initial volume) * (Temperature change) Volume change = (0.00096) * (150 liters) * (20°C) Volume change ≈ 2.88 liters

On the fuel issue, in aviation when refuelling aircraft you need to be mindful of the fuels specific gravity. It is because fuel is less dense than water i.e 1 litre of water = 1 kilogram, but 1 litre of fuel can sometimes only weigh 800 grams. It depends on the relative atmospheric pressure and can vary at different times of the day, so thats probably how the stewards were getting different readings everytime they filled and drained the cars 🤷‍♂️

As I'm older than dirt and was watching F1 in the 1980s I can say that 1988 was the most boring season I've ever watched. Unless you're a die hard Senna fan it was just dull watching an OP car with McClaren hiring the two top drivers in the world win every single race (except Monza). Over half the teams were switching over to aspirated engines and the one of choice was the Judd, which was unreliable so that further diminished the interest. They were largely McClaren parades and the only races I have clear images in my mind of are Monza and Silverstone where Mansell did this extraordinary manoeuvre of swerving on the track to find the wet patches so he wouldn't need to change tyres. It worked and he got 2nd place. At the risk of angering Prost and Senna fans I'm going to say that...in my opinion...1988-90 wasn't a particularly thrilling time to watch F1 unless you were a McClaren fan.

Another cool fact about the Honda engine is they did a trick with their blowoff valve by putting it in a low pressure area and that masked the true peak boost. Rules in 1988 said turbos could only make 2.5 bar of boost but that engine supposedly saw as much as 2.9 bar

Ironic that the closest car to beating a Dominant Honda powered car in F1.. is similarly dominant Honda powered car. Funny how that worked out. Granted, the Italian Grand Prix hasn't happened yet so there still is time for an...intervention of sorts. Maybe we'll have another random track invasion and THAT's the day Ferrari get that win and break the strangle hold. Think about it: Its already happened 7 times before (Including last year) and they interestingly keep dipping between even numbered years and odd numbered years and last year was an Even numbered Year. Wouldn't be the first time its happened two years consecutively if it does as the last time was 2003 and 2004. Just sayin'.... Also, I am more and more convinced that Mansell was cursed, that or had a black cat cross his path at some point. There is no other explanation as to why he had so many odd ways to be out of action. And finally, Senna not having a rage at someone taking him out? That's..odd.

TV audiences are starting to go down. A whole season of one team wining every race and I'm sure next season will be even less watched. Honestly I think the reason Senna didn't become enraged was because he knew he'd made a mistake in pre-guessing that Schlesser would go off into the gravel trap and didn't anticipate him being able to recover control of the car. Also while Schlesser did indeed apologise for the move at the time, years later he was somewhat unrepented about it, and even went as far as to claim McLaren should thank him for "Keeping them hungry"

Alain Prost won the World Drivers' Championship in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993. He finished 2nd in 1983, 1984, 1988 and 1990. 51 wins (35 turbo, 16 non-turbo). 33 poles (17 turbo, 16 non-turbo). 41 fastest laps (25 turbo, 16 non-turbo). Artyon Senna was World Champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He finished 2nd in 1989 and 1993. He finished 3rd in 1987. 41 wins (14 turbo, 27 non-turbo). 65 poles (29 turbo, 36 non-turbo). 19 fastest laps (10 turbo, 9 non-turbo). As team mates (1988-89): Wins - Senna 14 (8 turbo, 6 non-turbo), Prost 11 (7 turbo, 4 non-turbo) Poles - Senna 26 (13 turbo, 13 non-turbo), Prost 4 (2 turbo, 2 non-turbo) Fastest Laps - Prost 12 (7 turbo, 5 non-turbo), Senna 5 (3 turbo, 2 non-turbo) Total Points - Prost 186 (105 turbo, 81 non-turbo), Senna 154 (94 turbo, 60 non-turbo)

@@MScotty90 Prost was very easy on the car in the race which meant that he could nurse tires, brakes, engines and transmissions to do their best during the race when it really mattered. He was a very smart driver who drove tactically and always set up a car well in race trim. During the first turbo-era when cars frequently broke down if driven beyond their limit this was truly exceptional. He wasn't called the Professor for nothing. An example of Prost's driving would be the 1986 Australian Grand Prix. After the race both the McLaren cars of Prost and his team mate (1982 World Champion) Keke Rosberg were checked. Rosberg had retired while leading what was his final race in F1 with just 20 laps to go... Prost won the race after Mansell's tyre went bust and Piquet did a pit-stop for fresh tires. Btw, Rosberg too had retired with tire issues. Being easy on the tires won Prost the race and his 2nd title (by 2 points from Mansell). Anyways, McLaren checked both Prost's and Rosberg's cars and found that the brake calipers of Rosberg's cars had worn down to almost nothing. Had he not retired with the tire issue he might have retired due to brake issues a few laps later. Prost's brake calipers were still in good condition and almost could be re-used for another race. And here's the surprise, Prost's fastest lap was 1.20:979 while Rosberg's was 1.21:900. So Prost still managed a fastest lap almost a *full second* faster than Keke Rosberg in the same car and didn't wear down his tires or brakes nearly as much. That says it all really. And never "assume" anything. Much of the world's great ills and tragedies comes from people assuming things. Aristotele assumed objects twice as heavy fall twice as fast but never bothered to check whether that actually was true in a simple experiment. For many centuries people also "assumed" he was right.

@@McLarenMercedes ... here is a fun fact. When Senna was forced to take over the spare McLaren MP4/4 at the start of the 1988 Brazilian Grand Prix, the team literally only had time to adjust the pedals in the car to suit the taller Senna. The spare was actually Prost's original race car, but he also had use of the spare that weekend and preferred it. Anyway, Senna drove the first half of the race until they black flagged him for changing cars after the green flag was shown on the parade lap in a race car that had Prost's settings. Senna found that they were better than his by being easier on the car, faster, and that they actually suited his driving style. So every race from then on, Senna simply copied Prost's settings for the cars.

@@MScotty90 I think this just comes down to the philosophy of the 2 drivers and the inherent difference between qualifying and an actual race lap, even if they may seem similar. Qualifying was Senna's strong suit cause it fitted his attitude the best, go out with a car trimmed to be as fast as possible and just inch out every tenth you can. His many poles are a testimony to this. There are a lot more components that go into a fast lap during a race. The car gets lighter as it burns fuel, you have tire wear and other mechanical parts that get worn out, you have other racers, either battling you directly or you are lapping them. Prost was an absolute master of minimizing the wear on his car and waiting for the right opportunity to strike. He'd often use qualifying to try to find the ideal race set up rather than trying to be as fast a possible like Senna. During the race, he drove rather defensively, trying not to wear down his car that much. Then after he became much lighter due to burning fuel, with fresher tires and a less worn out car, and many of his opponents already having retired due to technical failures, Prost would strike and smack down many of his fastest laps. He was called "the professor" for a reason. Senna was faster over 1 Lap, but Prost was overall way more constant and fast when he needed to be.

Do people indeed still complain about a 'dominant team'? It's been like that since forever... worse, it has been like that before Red Bull, before Mercedes and so on... Actually have you ever made a video about 2 seasons in a row where there weren't a dominant team? I mean it would have to be 2 seasons in a row to be considered dominant, wouldn't it..? If not then make it a video about just the one season then - pretty sure there weren't many of those... 🤔

I agree with your take. If Perez was strong enough to always bet at the front with Max I could see it happening, but Perez just isn't good enough IMO. No points system will satisfy everyone, the one I hated most was 10-6-4-3-2-1 because it weighted wins too heavily. The current system is good for (almost) ensuring every team scores at least once per season. NASCRASH should adopt "20 best results" (use FIM points scoring, top 15) and drop their ludicrous "playoff/chase". A driver can come back into contention with a late season string of wins.
