Ran into this by mistake and been listening for 2 hours. Great story teller and love these stories. I feel like I'm just hanging out with buddy hearing stories the guy is so down to earth with cool tales. This may be my new channel I listen to when I go to sleep at night and want to listen to something interesting and relaxed. Thanks for posting!

One of the many times that I saw Maynard play at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT, I saw him making hand gestures to Bruce Galloway at the board. Whatever he was trying to tell him, Bruce wasn't getting it and didn't make the adjustment(s) that Maynard wanted. Finally, in the middle of the tune, when someone else was soloing, Bruce walked up to the side of the stage (floor level), Maynard, obviously very angry at this point walked over there to the edge of the stage and yelled something down at him at the top of his lungs, so loud that it seemed that the room shook. Then Bruce turned around with a look on his face as if he had just seen a ghost, walked back to the board with his tail between his legs. As Maynard turned around and made his way back toward the center of the stage he kinda shook his whole body and threw his head to the side and uttered something, it must have been something like "DAMN-IT." It took him a while to regain that positive energy after that. I've seen Maynard live over 30 times and I'd never seen him lose his shit the way he did that night. It almost seemed as if he was ready to punch somebody. I wasn't close enough to the stage to hear exactly what Maynard yelled, but I'm sure curious about what it was. I'm sure the people in at least the first 20 rows must have heard it.

Thanks for sharing these stories. We need more of this sharing from musicians. Really nice to hear.

That was actually very very insightful, never thought of it in that way before. But I did know that Maynard always blew onto stage with a wave and a big smile and that energy he talked about made everyone excited and positive.. heck, guess it does work!

I guess Louis Armstrong did it too. Some people call it showmanship, or entertainment: That flow of energy makes it all happen. I was fortunate to see Maynard live. That was in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in late November, 1982. He had the exact same band that recorded in ‘83 the Live in SF album. DiBlasio was the bari player, or course. Irakere played first; then Maynard. The flow of positive energy worked full blast that night!!! I still get goosebumps remembering it. Thanks for this videos, Mr. DiBlasio.

As a leader of my own jazz big band for over 20 yrs, music teacher for 40 yrs and a producer of 3 concert presentations in San Diego of Maynards bands, the first in 1974, (Mc Carther Park days) talked with him privately and he revealed that he studied Yoga for “breathing’ and meditation!” I appreciate your honesty and expertise! He indeed set the tone! This is valuable info for any LEADER! I also am proud to have had one of my students play the guitar in High Voltage era band... I hung with and had in my last band, the former US Navy Commander of Navy bands, Mark Hammond, who played trumpet and sang in our band and we had many similar talks about leadership and issues as they came up. I feel very fortunate to have successfully walked that path. Thanks for your contribution here!! Vary valuable!!!

Maynard played at my community college and I recently found a tape apparently I made of that concert. I had forgotten all about it. The tape is labelled 'erase this and die'. lol.

Doc Rinehart once showed me a blank check made payable to him from Maynard to teach his son trumpet. Of course, his son passed away very tragically and I heard that he was thrown into a depression for a long time. Just wondering if it was a pre-gig condition. Every time though he was always positive. Thanks for sharing.

I would think that if you had ever met Doc Reinhardt, you'd be able to come close to spelling his name.

Denis is a great sax player but is a terrible storyteller. Took him almost 12 minutes to tell a story that should've taken 60 seconds.
