Yes. He had to go through the quallies to get into the main draw, which is wild. Good news is that he made it through seven matches in a row and only dropped one set. He can make it deep into a slam or even win it if he can keep the unforced errors and his temper down. One of the best shot makers on tour and all the fans know it.

Happy for Shapo. Second-only ATP title (Stockholm 2019), and he did it coming through qualies. Cherry on top with Djoker in attendance handing him the trophy in all smiles 🏆. Dennis has always had the talent and potential, just never could quite keep it together. Hoping he turns a new page here and keeps on improving.

I know the realization has hit home with Denis, that prior to his injury at the second of half of 2023, that he has underachieved as a tennis player. I have read so many articles in which he was featured. At one point, he had decided he was comfortable being a top 20 player, nd didn’t seem to want to work any harder than he was working at the time. This may have been back in 2022. It seems that after turning 25 years old, and watching players like Shelton, and others now eclipsing him, he isn’t happy one bit. He is game is one of the best on tour to watch. He’s such a talented, dynamic and fun player to watch. The tennis world needs him at the top of the game. So happy he now has coach who can lead him back to the top, where he belongs in the sport. Go Denis!!!

well, he is only 25. mentally very few have the strength to be incredibly mature and rework their fundamentals and tactics when you're a talented prodigy and you can instead lean on your strengths and forego your weaknesses. I think the knee injury really made him rethink his approach to tennis, and luckily Shapo is young enough to make these changes stick

Here are some thoughts from someone who was at the tournament (only first round of qualifiers and the final, sadly my work schedule didn't allow me to see more matches): - I saw klein, hanfman, kovalik, pirosz, ajdukovic, sharipov, fucsovics, karatsev, shapovalov (x2), lestienne, dodig, murray, mansouri, peers - live and it was an awesome experience let me tell you (shapovalov's backhand is a thing of beauty live) - there are levels to this game that you can only see live, and you can clearly see who is the better player, and who will probably win that day - after seeing shapovalov's first match I thought he would either make the final or win the title, low and behold I was right - I took a picture with shapovalov and fucsovics, fucsovics was really nice, shapovalov was annoyed the whole day no idea why, the whole arena was chanting his name, it seems he is really tense on the court, compared to his off the court persona - the atmosphere was incredible, even though the arena wasn't filled entirely, the fans were cherring after every point - around 2:2, or 3:2 for međedović you could clearly see he was moving badly, and honestly you could really see it was just a matter of time. There was this one backhand where he was so slow, and his forehand was honestly terrible. He played a good match but against a perfect shapovalov that wasn't nearly enough. Tactically, he was having a lot of success when hitting his backhand crosscourt early to shapovalov's forehand but for some reason he didn't use that play nearly enough. His net-play was pretty good, again surprising he didn't try that more often, when he knew he psychically wasn't at it. At some key moments shapovalov had a bit more luck, with the netcords, shanks, and really close calls. Shapovalov was definitely nervous, he made some strange double faults in the beginning of the match, and at the end of the first set. But at 15:40 in the first set he pretty much served four great serves. After that hamad didn't have any more break points. - the crowd was really fair to both players for the most part. There was some asshole who was constantly shouting between shapovalov's first and second serve, and it got that bad that not only did the umpire Rask have to warn him repeatadly, he also managed to annoy hamad so much that he screamed at him at one moment. After that, he stopped doing that. - I know hamad is really young, but he has a lot of growing up to do. It took him a real while to actually congratulate shapovalov. Heck, he thanked novak before saying anything nice about shapovalov. He didn't even aknowledge his team or shapo's team. And đorđe đoković may be a good organiser, but he's a lowsy speaker. He basically said congrats shapo and nothing else. "Hey dennis, I know you had a tough season, but you are looking incredible, and a long-deserved second title for you, and we couldn't be more thrilled and honored that it happened here". Nah, he couldn't come up with anything like that. - shapovalov is a class act when he wins, I don't know when he loses. He congratulated međedović, told him he's a brilliant talent, that he was pleasantly surprised, he expects a lot more good battles with hamad, and that it was an honor and privilege to be here. He congratulated both teams, said how much this meant to him, how weird it is to see troicki in the coaches' box. All in all a lovely speach. - novak and vajda really aren't friends anymore. Maybe novak wants to be I don't know, but there were a lot of really forced interactions with each other, it was honestly sad to see. Maybe they had a fight or simply drifted but whatever the case they are not friends anymore.

I did not expect Novak would appear. He must be the owner of this tournament or tournament director. Hamad ground stroke is not reliable in long exchange stroke and too much rely on power serve and running out of gas, that would be problematic in 3 out of 5 set in grand slam. Well done, Dennis golden hair young man and proud Canadian! US
