Dennis please produce more content on Gypsy Jazz. I'm new to the style I bought your book, I'm learning, I wanted help on understanding more about la Pompe as well as it's variations.

The 'problem' with set formulae is apparent in N. Indian Classical music where the melodies have been codified and abstracted into set forumulas, some of which have existed since the Mogul courts of the 1600s. But for N. Indian music the 'problem' is somewhat alleviated by learning and listening to the excellent music the masters play. This problem of codification is universal to all music. The solution is maybe individual improvisation and composition and being part of a social scene with great players.

It's like it's easier to hear the style, or demonstrate it, than to explain it

You speak really good gypsy, its all there in your playing and probably if you think about, all languages have slang and little pauses like huh, a very common one. So I can see that gypsy jazz is a language in the world of musical languages. Your picking book by the way is very cool, I'm renaming it as " How to speak gypsy" which will be very handy if I make it to Samois this summer. I fully appreciate mentioning the theory cos if ya didnt grow up in a gypsy camp its very hard to break through. Excellent work man, and finally what you also helped me with is backward picking ala Benson, that literally launched my rocket of the pad, especially with American style blues. Django's minor blues themes are so interesting but so different, but I think he must have had at least have heard American flavour blues, but no full tone bends for me ! You should take time out and listen to the great Congolese player Franco, but only on his treatment of Cuban style Bolero themes like Baiser Ya Litama and Bato Ya Mabe Batondi Mboko. They seem to be full of the same gypsy language you talk about, played in minor keys with similar phrases, Lolita by Dr Nico is another that has a lot more single note playing that I find very reminiscent of Django's sense of melody. Europe meets Africa via music.
