Music videos were still "relatively" in their infancy when this was shot... 1983. If there wasn't a big budget that added too... Glad you reacted to this one, truly a classic. I remember hearing this everywhere when I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn NY. When people had "boom" boxes. Going outside was a musical experience and connected me to other genres... jazz was the only genre played in my household as my father was a saxophonist.

Siedah Garrett did an interview with QuestLove from the Roots (his podcast is available on Spotify) where they cover her career and they go into detail about this song. She originally was not supposed to be on the record. She was singing as a reference for a named singer to be named later, who the producers never were able to get on the track. So they kept her on the song.

Siedah Garrett, says she still making money from the song "Man in the Mirror". She was also a back-up singer for Madonna, Madonna loved her voiced so much that she pulled her from the back line-up and brought out front to sing right beside her live at one of her concerts (something she's never done). "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" another great duet with Michael. Linking up with the great Dennis Edwards from the Temps, of course they both smashed it.

Great reaction! I heard a story that the lyrics were made up. They are not actually part of the Swahili language. Another story is that this song has been sampled many times. But there is a cover version that was recorded with Jermaine Jackson, Michael's brother, and Whitney Houston. There's even a clip from Entertainment Tonight where they interview Whitney and Jermaine as the song is being recorded. It was supposed to be on Jermaine's album but didn't make it.

Oh ok. The one that got upset in the film that the song lyric about his daddy dying in September was true in real life? I don't know if it's an accurate scene but the voice of the person that hat sung it sounds similar. I know of the Temptations and some songs but not their faces. I've seen the film about them though

Dennis Edwards replaced David Ruffin, the original lead singer of the legendary group, The Temptations. Throughout the following years he popped in and out of The Temptations before venturing on this solo career. Siedah (sigh-E-duh) Garrett is a talented singer/songwriter who co-wrote Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror and Keep the Faith with Glen Ballard, who co-wrote and produced Alanis Morisette's breakthrough Jagged Little Pill album. Siedah, also sings backup on Man in the Mirror and duets with Michael Jackson on his #1 smash single I Just Can't Stop Loving You, the first single released from his Bad album. Siedah has also toured extensively with Michael Jackson as a backup singer and can be seen in many of his live performances. In 2007 she was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing an original song, Love You I Do, sung by Jennifer Hudson for the film version of the musical Dreamgirls.
