Getting this edit completed on time was a collaborative effort. One byproduct of multiple "cooks in the kitchen" is sometimes slight errors are introduced. One I have been made aware is a moment where our hosts video disappears for 4 seconds. Just wanted to let ya'll know that we know. 😂 It was a booboo. Meant to turn the movie full screen for those 4 seconds, but whoopsie. Anyway, hope ya'll enjoy! This is a movie I watched multiple times in a row when it first came out and I was very excited at the opportunity to have Achara and Michael watch it.

Another thing a lot of people missed was that Rodger was Alonzo’s training officer, that’s why the first time they went to his house he told Alonzo “you used to be just like him”. Rodger was always a crooked cop but in his case over time he was able to slowly turn Alonzo crooked and it reached a point where Rodger felt he could trust Alonzo, so when Rodger eventually retired from the force THAT’S why Alonzo had knowledge of where he stashed his money from all those years of ill gotten gains from the street. At the restaurant when the “Wiseman” (crooked police captains and a district attorney) asked Alonzo how did he expect to get out of his situation with the Russians he told them he was going to cash in “an old account” meaning Rodger. When Rodger was still on the force he had connections to crooked high ranking officials that HE paid off (remember Rodger was just an “account” to them) and he passed those connections on to Alonzo. The mistake Alonzo made was that he also tried to turn Jake the way Rodger turned him but the difference was Rodger had more than a day for this process and Alonzo was trying to do this in less than 24hrs, remember Alonzo’s original plan WAS NOT to kill Jake, it only changed when Alonzo finally realized he wasn’t going to be able to do it, there’s a lot of layers in this movie and one viewing isn’t gonna do it but bravo to both Ethan and Denzel, Ethan was also nominated for best supporting actor for the Oscar but didn’t win but Denzel won the Best Actor Oscar for this same movie.

Seeing as a shell casing is going up and out. It would not hit your hand so this "explanation " makes no sense. No real shooter would shoot a gun sideways, or even use two pistols like that. You will loose any accuracy beyond 5 meters. That's just done for movie looks. And even if a casing hits your hand like that you will feel it. But it will only burn you if it gets stuck between your clothes.
@charlize1253Ай бұрын
@@VeryFastRodi There's a video somewhere on KZbin where an expert marksman tries shooting a pistol "gangster style", aka sideways like Alonzo, and it's highly inaccurate because of the way the gun recoils. When you shoot vertically, your hand position on the grip makes the recoil go straight up and it's relatively easy to bring it back to level with gravity, but when you shoot sideways, the gun recoils to the side and twists so it's harder to bring it back on target.

It's referenced a few times, by Jake and the corrupt cop played by Tom Berenger, but this movie was made fairly soon after the Ramparts police scandal. In fact, Denzel modeled Alonzo's behavior off the example of the main player in that situation, Rafael Perez. The Monte Carlo's tag was a direct allusion to Perez.

So Alonzo and Jake actually meet up again." PG: "Didn't Alonzo die?" SG: "Well sir, he's a beloved character in a popular movie, so... No. He didn't."

The entire iconic King Kong speech was totally adlibed. Antoine Fuqua talks about it in one of his interviews. Kind of an "act like a tree" moment from acting class. Of course Denzel undoubtedly SMASHES each line. This will go down in cinematic history of one of the best movies ever.

It’s funny to watch these commentators essentially forgive all that Alonzo does 3/4 through the movie because he’s Denzel and he’s always playing a good character. Only until he’s truly unforgivable and obvious is when people are comfortable saying “ok he’s a bad guy” 😂

I think it's additionally the combination of the title and Alonzo justifying the shit he does that also lullls the viewer into complacency. We're made to assume that the roughness is part of the implied training, especially with the "wolf speech" in consideration. It's only when Alonzo stops justifying himself (Roger's murder) that he swings into being perceived as the outright villain.
@charlize1253Ай бұрын
This movie is like a Rorshach test for the audience: at what point do you turn on Alonzo? Did it take all the way to him killing Roger and then contracting to have his own partner killed, or was it during one his multiple earlier felonies that he openly commits for 90 straight minutes?
@LordVolkovАй бұрын
"He can still tussle despite being-" "High!" 😅 Ethan Hawke was on PCP... He could've killed those two and not even realized it. It's highly dissociative and makes people pretty terrifying if they get worked up.

This movie has one of the most important deleted scenes in cinema history. It’s a disservice to the viewer that it was cut. It was the only scene that humanized Alonzo.
@jamesoblivionАй бұрын
Casting Denzel was a stroke of genius on par with casting Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West. In the latter case, it was the shock of the ultimate good guy playing a heinous villain. In this case, it means that Alonzo can cross SO many lines, and still keep the audience invested in the idea that he's just trying to toughen Jake up, WAY after everyone should've figured out that he's playing his own game from the jump. Because it's Denzel. The ultimate good guy. Our brains struggle to process the idea of him as the archetypal bad guy, and it makes viewers second guess their instincts over and over and over. It's the definition of perfect casting.

There is absolutely no planet in this universe where Ethan "stood toe to toe" with Denzel in this movie!!!! Denzel is literally one of the greatest actors of all time whilst Ethan is a okay actor. Denzel was so good he made everyone around him look better which on a very limited amount of people in history have ever managed to do.

In regards to the police. Just using the breona taylor murder as an example there was reports of judge using questionable methods of issuing warrants and the police initially falsely arrested Breonna boyfriend for shooting at the officers . Although it was later dropped due to public pressure of the "false" charges. So believably this is close to "some" actual police activities

24:20 You guys are 100% correct. How in the hell did you figure that out? Whats funny/ironic is that _Demitri_ is played by an actor named _Denzel Whitaker..._ *AND HE WAS IN BLACK PANTHER!* What's "ironic" is that _IN REAL LIFE_ he was named after *Denzel* Washington, and his first role in a film was with Denzel Washington... And in _Black Panther_ he played a young *_Zuri,_* who was _Forest Whittaker's_ character... And his last name is _Whitaker._ So, _Denzel Whitaker_ got to be in movies with 2 legendary actors that share his namesake... (though Forest's last name is spelled with 2 t's). How crazy is that? But good on ya for recognizing him.

If you notice Roger has the same goatee Alonzo has, which shows Roger has an influence on him. When the 3 wise men told the peanut butter story, it made Alonzo realize that he needed to rob Roger & either have him deal with his punishment of his corruption or off him off for his corruption This movie is so good, it took me 23 years to get this far
