In the book, you kinda feel bad for Nedry. Sure he caused Jurassic Park to fail, but that was never the plan and he sure as hell didn't deserve to die in such a gruesome way. InGen and Hammond really did screw him over and by going after his other clients they ensured he was stuck with them. The plan (in the novel) was to shut down the security system, grab the embryos, meet the worker at the docks, and be back all within a few minutes. Going smoothly, no one would ever have suspected a thing and he'd get the money that should've been paid to him all while sticking it to Hammond (who was a major jerk in the books).

@@TheDinoFax I'm no programmer, but I think it's safe to say that we've all had some sort of bad work experience to the point where if some dude with a briefcase full of money showed up and offered an exchange _and_ a way to get some minor payback at our employers, we would've taken it in a heartbeat. That's kinda how I think of Nedry. Nedry could've been any of us who got caught in a bad position and wanted some way out. ... Except his way out was through the teeth of a Dilophosaurus...

@@TheDinoFax I mean I can tell you like five reasons why that plane was a bad idea three of which involve the person who he was selling these embryos to does he know what they’re going to do with them and does he know whether or not they’re going to squeal if they get caught with those because if they start singing like a canary to avoid getting the clamps put on them the Nedry might wind up with a worse fate than just being eaten by a dinosaur

Definitely a good read, and yeah in the movie it is suggested that Nedry needed more money(or maybe that Nedry was just trying to deceive Hammond into giving him a raise). However it’s heavily implied that Nedry in the movie that he is just greedy and that any financial problems he may or may not have were a result of his own poor decisions/mistakes. In the novel, however, Nedry was well and truly screwed over by Hammond and Ingen. He is overworked, underpaid(at least in relation to the amount of work Ingen expects from him), and almost forced into staying employed under Hammond. So Nedry is a lot more likable/relatable than his movie counterpart and I would argue smarter considering he recorded his conversation with Dodgson about the plan in case he tried to screw him over like Hammond did.

As someone who does coding and IT work for a living, and reading what he had to undertake, you can see why he was so disgruntled and understandably asked for more accommodation and transparency. In short, imagine trying to build a Lego set that theoretically you know how to build off of memory alone; now try building it blind folded, doubling the size and all the while they are asking you to change and add more parts to the build with pieces you never worked with before, mind you WHILE BLINDFOLDED for the SAME PAY. Not saying what he did was right or warranted, or that he's even a good guy but they backed him into a corner after continual ridiculous conditions due to "Hammond's lack of care and understanding for what was being asked and done", hence the general theme of Jurassic Park itself.

Also in the book, the park was probably going to fail anyway because there were dinosaurs breeding and moving around the island already. They even had compies escape to the mainland, who promptly ate a baby. The park in the book was doomed from the start. The park in the movie could have worked had nedry not done his thing. Or if they had just euthanized the raptors like sane people would. Like seriously, the raptors already ate a guy and they are practically impossible to display to the public due to their malicious intelligence seen in the movie.

@thedukeofchutney468
@thedukeofchutney468 8 ай бұрын
I’ve read both and the movie is better. Honestly the book feels more like a first draft of the movie than anything else. Spielberg got the rights to the movie before the book was even published as he was friends with Crichton, and Crichton in turn helped write script and was involved with the film. So what you are seeing on screen is Michal Crichton’s Jurassic Park. Honestly aside from Nedry most of the characters in the film are BETTER than in the novel.
@applescruff1969
@applescruff1969 8 ай бұрын
@@thedukeofchutney468 It feels like that because Michael Crichton did indeed originally write it as a screenplay in the early 80's. However, interest in it was...lacking, to say the least. After almost a decade of no interest, he decided to turn it into a novel. The irony is, of course, the novel became a bestseller and then interest in making a film finally started.

In the movie, while he is portrayed as a greedy character. They also still passively mention why he’s greedy. While, the book goes into more detail. It is still mentioned that the contract that he was working under, was nowhere close to what was required of him as was the compensation. There’s also a few little details a lot of people seem to miss, even though he did set up a program that was going to mess with the security systems, he did not plan for the hurricane, (which made him bump up his timetable) or that the group in the cars would be stuck there. He also made sure that the Raptors cages we’re not affected by his virus. Meaning that while everybody else, besides the hunter claimed that the Raptors were not that big a deal, he was not going to take that chance. The irony that Hamon in the movie kept saying the same phrase: “Spared no expense.” When in truth, it was because he DID spare expenses that caused a disaster in the book and movie.

The main problem with the films- though they’re still awesome and even improve on some things- is that they changed character personalities and meshed more than one character together. The problem is Crichton has each character play an essential role in the novel with how they interact and what they do. I.e. Making Hammond likable required them to change several story beats because him being a jerk was actually important. Ed Regis, for instance, would’ve been the perfect disgruntled employee for bribing a loyal-but-still greedy Nedry to shut down the computer system. Nedry would’ve then suffered extreme guilt over what he’d done. Also, if there’s one thing I hate they did, it’s that they made my boy Gennaro dino food when he was actually one of the freaking MVPs in the book. #JusticeForTheLawyer

Not to mention in the book he states Hammond told him he was like a son to him and promised a lot he obviously wouldn't do. So Thats another factor

For those curious as to how he dies in the books it’s genuinely much more gruesome yet not far off from what we seen in the movie. In the movie Nedry goes off course as he attempts to deliver the embryos running into a Dilophosaurus along the way. Nedry doesn’t think much of it even cracking jokes until it spits venom at him causing temporal blindness. Trying to clean the venom off he realizes he’s not alone in his vehicle as he ultimately dies off screen with the water slowly turning red and the barbasol can containing the embryos being covered in mud implying his death. In the books however everything happens about the same up to the point he gets into his vehicle to wipe the venom off. As he’s attempting to wipe the venom off out in the open he feels something warm realizing his intestines are now hanging out of him and ultimately dies with his head in the mouth of the Dilophosaurus as his intestines are falling out. I wasn’t fully aware of this movie being classified as a horror film until you read the books lol. The tone is much more darker and serious than the movie.

Key word is secondary antagonist. The main antagonist in the book was Hammond

Since I have a problem with reading due to a psychiatric condition. I heard the audio book of Jurassic Park. When it came to Nedry, I couldn't find the difference. Just that he was dark, he always kept everything to himself and didn't want likes, nor to nor anybody to pry into his business. For everything else, I did not notice, I just thought it was the same Nedry from the movie, the only difference was how he was killed by the Dilophosaurus.

They need to either remake the movie franchise but like the book. Or make a series more faithful to the books.

Jurassic Park was actually about corporate greed and human hubris, the dinosaurs were more of a plot point. But having the dinosaurs be the monsters works better for the screen, because visually, they are very terrifying.

Nedry also has arguably the gnarliest deaths in the novel. He's still kind of a dick. But the novel does a great deal to flesh out everyone's motivations and characters and Nedry comes across as way more understandable

If you were screwed over by being told to build that you theoretically knew of memory alone how to build and told to add stuff not planned on the first place for the same payment.

So the books lambasted crony capitalists and the shows were more cartoon-y. That seems to happen a lot
