Every time I hear dis' song Ka Manu, I picture Auntie Alice Namakelua playing her guitar in her ki'hoalu style! In fact she wrote dis' song Ka Manu! But, somehow Dennis with his magic voice jus' kicks it up couple notches. Not saying Auntie Alice didn't sing well, but Dennis has dat' voice dat' soothes da' listening ears! RIL Dennis miss your magical voice!

My halau learned it a long time ago. I never got fluent in the dance. I think it comes right out of Aunty Alice's family experiences where kids would ride to other parts of the Big Island and perhaps a romance would bloom. Not ok back in dem days. Very poignant. Look it up in huapala. They have good explanation. About two young lovers who were kept apart by parents. This mele has special meaning to me. I was fortunate to take Dennis hiking here in Colorado. On the trail he heard a sound that startled him. I explained that it was a little bird in the bushes, rustling leaves to find bugs. So that night at the concert he dedicated this song to me. I was stunned! I'll never forget the wonderful experience of hiking a beautiful trail and listening to his stories. When he started singing in my car I almost drove off the road! Miss you and your voice and aloha, Dennis!

@@auntiebobbolink what an amazing amazing story of your friendship with the late Dennis Pavao. My wife discovered Dennis Pavao about 1992 and loved his voice right away. We choreographed a dance for the Arizona Hawaiian Club to the Neil Diamond song called Morningside. It was a beautiful song. I just now heard this song for the first time this past weekend (Friday June 28th 2024) and i absolutely love this song and very sad at the same time wishing he was still around. I just read what you wrote about what the song is about but i think it is appropriate that i will choreograph a hula to this song and dance it for my grandkids, 1 and 2 years old, who will be moving to Utah with their parents this October. So I want to dance a hula to this song for them as I know for sure that will be heartbroken when they move 😢😢😢😢

@@helamana Thank you! However, that wasn't the origin of the song... he had already recorded it. It was just my memory of a wonderful time being able to take him to the hills in Colorado and listen to his stories of growing up on the big island and learning music. What am amazing experience!
