I got a bit of a laugh hearing Matt Groening talk about how this show was such a huge disappointment to him as a kid, with the tornado in the opening credits getting his hopes up that Dennis would truly be a total force of chaos, only to give way to a much tamer kid who never even used his slingshot.

Yep. It was that disappointment that inspired him to draw Bart, so if not for the Dennis the Menace show, we might not have had The Simpsons. This is even referenced in the episode "Take My Wife, Sleaze" where Bart meets Jay North at a '50s diner. North tells him "I was America's bad boy" and shares some of the storylines ("I accidentally stepped in Mr. Wilson's flower bed! That was a two-part episode!"!"), leaving Bart unimpressed.

I saw someone here comment about the episode ending on a down note, but that felt pretty necessary to me, considering that the topic being discussed at the end of this episode is one that's going to be a recurring theme throughout a lot of Nick shows. Really hammers home the point of history repeating itself and that, no matter how many standards are put into place, those scum in a position of power will still seek to abuse it in whatever ways they can. We already saw this both here and with Roger Price. I'm bracing myself for when we're gonna have to tackle John Kricfalusci, Dan Schneider, Chris Savino, and others that I know I'm forgetting about.

I remember this show when it was on Nickelodeon back in the mid 1980’s. Prior to this, it was one of the NYC stations that I’m not sure if it was in reruns. Due to the popularity of reruns being on Nickelodeon, DIC also did an animated version of “Dennis the Menace” in 1986 in syndication and on CBS around 1988 or so as part of the Saturday morning lineup, and in 1993, WB did a movie adaption of “Dennis the Menace” as well.

Some how Dennis, Lassie, Donna Reed, My Three Sons, and Dobie Gillis didn't seem antiquated to me at the time. My parents thought it was hilarious that I was growing up on the same shows they did. Nick did exactly what it set out to do - brought my parents to the channel. (I still had to sneak and watch Ren and Stimpy, though.)

It happened before with child labor, still happening in places that have sweatshops and the like. There's just a fair percentage of people that are willing to treat anyone they see as 'lesser' like garbage. There are still plenty of people that are under the impression that the well being of a child doesn't really matter and/or don't bother to figure out what that actually entails. It seems like each generation gets kinder, more accepting, shows more empathy. I hope that stays true.

I’m almost disappointed we got to Paul Peterson and his work after sitcoms here instead of with Donna Reed, but with what happened to North, discussing it now was unavoidable. And I’m sure the jump cut to Amanda Bynes when talking about Nickelodeon not being great about caring for its child stars was not a coincidence either. I do appreciate the care and responsibility taken here when dealing with North’s abuse. To this day, I remain baffled how no one - not one adult over four years - picked up on some sign, some cue that he was in trouble. Then again, that’s applying a mindset to know what to look for and to protect a child to a reality where it just wasn’t possible. It’s terrible for North, but also deeply regretful that the show carries the stigma. How can anyone enjoy a show knowing that the child performing is suffering for it? Sad it happened, sad it hurts, sad that there are no answers to be found.

Paul Peterson was a Mouseketeer on the original MMC during its first year in 1955, but it didn’t last long until he left to do other projects including the “Donna Reed Show”. He was also a singer at one time where he did few singles on the Motown label, during the late 1960’s and it went nowhere on the charts. Paul Peterson was on the Motown for a brief period in 1968, and it was one of the few white artists came to Berry Gordy’s label. Here’s a song that Paul Peterson was at Motown. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6WvpZ55pdmNpas And here is another one from 1967 with the original version of “Chained”, a song which was later remade by Marvin Gaye, and it was released as a B-side to “You”. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnWVZpZpn8p5fas And then, the B-side called “Don’t Let It Happen to Us”. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJyugpqHnJyqgac And finally, “A Little Bit for Sandy”. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3PMfX2ZodaUbdk

What Jay North and other child actors went and still go through is horrible and inexcusable. I think there's also something to be said about basing an entire show/concept around "haha kids are such a pest! Don't you just HATE kids?
