Did this hike waaay back in the 90s there are several vistas along the way that are really intense …. Going down was very unsettling I passed a few people who were going down on their butts …. Never would wear sandals I wore trail running shoes light but sturdy heel counter for lateral support .. Was surfing a lot back then so the hike was no biggie … back then there was a trespass sign posted near the fence

It's not easy but wasn't as difficult as going up for us. Mostly, make sure you do the hike on day with low winds and minimal rain. We are moderate level hikers as well, so you should be good.

Someone took the ropes down (I think as part of an effort to curtail people using the Moanalua Valley Trail to cut over to the stairs) So if anyone goes now, I would definitely recommend microspikes to maintain traction on the steep sections.

@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
I don’t see why not! We were there pretty early, and the gates of the park is closed for cars. But you can walk right in :) and it won’t work offline with the free version, but I believe they have a free trial. And otherwise, you might be able to find your way with just our instructions. It just gets a bit tricky where the tree is with the markings. Once you’ve past that, it’s pretty self explanatory. Hope this helps!

curious question, why is the other way illegal? This looks like its more dangerous than the stairs, if only they repair it and charge a fee instead.

I think it's a liability issue, since the stairs are owned by the city. I also think the local community is against opening the stairs. I wish they would fix the stairs and open them up for hikers though!

It is definitely an exhausting hike, because the way up is so long. It could be dangerous, because of the ridge line, winds and potential muddy parts where you’re holding on to a rope.

We think it is doable, it might take you a bit longer. Especially on the steep incline parts, but you can just take a break. What’s hard about this hike, is that it takes so long (7-8 hours) with a pretty long steep incline part. It should be doable :)

You found guava on the trail. There is a lot all over Hawaii, if you shake the tree the ripe ones will fall. Also, even though the hike is technically “legal” once you touch the stairs or the metal thing at the top that’s when you’re technically breaking the law & yea this “back way” is a lot longer and a lot more dangerous.
