The terrain is stunning! what's with the big white rope that's fixed? do you lead it or use fixed lines? no matter what, it's a wild summit that's no piece of cake. good job
@AlbertMXG
@AlbertMXG Жыл бұрын
It's been 3 years since your comment and you might already know it but.. just in case.. in many popular mountains in the Alps (and other areas but especially there) they set up this big fixed ropes (for example in Matterhorn too) to facilitate the ascend (ppl would go anyway so at least they minimize accidents) This could be climbed 100% without fixed ropes but would create huge traffic jams (as you can see there is traffic jam anyway so imagine if there were not fixed lines) Pro athletes go solo and use only those fixed ropes to speed climb (check Kilian Jornet doing his record in Matterhorn). But the rest of the mortals use both fixed and own ropes with gear for more security (fixed rope doesn't stop a fall) hope (although late) it helped :)
@gonamok
@gonamok Жыл бұрын
@@AlbertMXG i understand the mentality is different in the alps, but in time those fixed lines become trash. Its especially ugly when there are 4 or 5 fixed lines of different ages. How do you know if the lines are good, and when do you chop them? Jugging a route cant be considered climbing it, however, you are climbing a rope and not the rock, and if you want to actually climb the line then the fixed lines are in the way of your placements. It still doesnt seem right that if you cant make a move you just grab the rope.
@AlbertMXG
@AlbertMXG Жыл бұрын
@@gonamok Moutains are a great business in the Alps and they replace this every now and then. I see your point but there are several routes to summit almost every mountain. Fixed ropes are on the mainstream route so amateur climbers dont complain hehe For instance Dent du Geant has other routes on different sides that are serious climb... not for everyone and with no fixed ropes at all
@gonamok
@gonamok Жыл бұрын
@@AlbertMXG thanks for your replys, Im a california climber and mountaineer and dont know much about the alps, so your comments are educating me. Do you mean that guides take clients up fixed ropes and call it an ascent? Do they (the clients) even carry tools, or just jumars and slings? I guess if you dont climb that would seem like scary technical climbing. lol
@AlbertMXG
@AlbertMXG Жыл бұрын
@@gonamok well, as you can see in the video, those fixed ropes are on certain parts and they are thick, meant to be grabbed with your hands.. not to put any jumar on it (not possible) they work as handholds basically to facilitate the ascend/descend. It makes both ascend and descend faster but you still need alpine practice, strength and endurance. Parties can go a bit faster so they reduce the number of forced bivouacs that ended up really bad. There are no camps here, all ascends are planned from refugee to summit and this usually takes from 10 to 15 hours, or even 20. Mountains are so step that camps are not possible and many people die lost in the night or they just fall... underestimating 4000m peaks So definitely those fixed ropes help the process and commercial expeditions. But again, they represent a small % of the routes and only on famous peaks. Alps still have some of the wildest faces on earth (check North of the Grandes Jorasses, just to mention one) cheers!
