Yes, checking in with the potential employer, either by giving them a quick call to follow up or sending a thank you letter are great ways to show your continued interest. :)

Be mindful that when and if you turn the job down, it may not be a good fit for you today but it may be a perfect fit for you in the future. Be professional, always!

The potential employer could also have another position that opens later or in another location that is perfect for you, so yes, absolutely! Remaining professional can open other doors for you.
