I am a practicing Dental Hygienist, and would like to add one thing that was missed. In addition to our written national board exam, we are required to take a regional clinical board exam as well. Each regional testing agency has slightly different requirements. The exam is taken with a volunteer patient (who we must find on our own) who meets all oral and systemic requirements. These clinical exams are accompanied by an additional written exam, which is much shorter in length than the 8 hour national written board exam. I hope this was helpful! :)

+Jane RDH.... I'm out of florida, and I would like to know is the job outlook really good for dental hygienist. I hear a lot of horror stories about getting employment after graduation and would like to know if its any truth to it. I'm really interested in the field but very concerned about the employment opportunities. Also, I've read on a blog that being a male may put you at a bad position for gaining employment. I just want to clear the air about this field... hopefully these are all just rumors and can help me get the correct advice.
@janerdh86529 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Antoine it's not a rumor. There are a lot of unemployed or underemployed hygienists. If you are willing to relocate, some areas have better employment and wages than others. I don't know first hand, but I have heard that wages are particularly low in Florida, because there are so many Hygiene schools and hygienists. At the same time, hygienists aren't the only people having a hard time finding work. I don't know any male hygienists personally, so I can't say that they have a harder time gaining employment. What are you looking to get out of a career in Hygiene and what other paths have you considered?
@danielantoine40469 жыл бұрын
+Jane RDH I just enjoy the the ideal of oral health compared to nursing (not that I don't like nursing). But I've been looking at sonography and actually nursing after doing so much research the more I dig, the more I see nursing as more promising compared to all the other fields. Nursing seems to truly have a better employment percentile after graduation compared to the other. But sonography, Radiography, Respiratory care, Dental hygiene and of course Nursing is the careers I've been looking into. btw thank you so much for replying... I've been searching for advice from someone credible.

+Daniel Antoine Hey Daniel, I have been rethinking my major (Nursing). I work in the hospital as a CNA and I hate it. I had a conversation with two retired nurses who use to work in the hospital and they suggested that I go into Dental Hygiene. I was really skeptical because I hate performing mouth care but now that I know that I can wear all of that equipment, I feel a little better, plus it's less stressful, more money, and well respected. It sounds like it's with an A.S.S degree I'll still scope out Nursing because of the doors that it opens. I could be a Nurse case manager, PA, Nurse mid-wife, Nurse Practitioner, etc. Bedside Nursing is not my passion so I wish you well on you Nursing career.

I was a dental hygienist for 9+ years and I'm now in an accelerated nursing BSN program. I know this is an old video but I just came across it. I just wanted to add in some things to think about with dental hygiene: In terms of salary; *most* offices do not pay you on salary, it's an hourly rate, which means that you have to clock out for lunch, some places make you clock out if a patient doesn't show (or your first/last pt cancels, you come early/leave late) and you lose those hours; you also don't tend to work 40 hour weeks (generalization, again - some offices, of course, you will) and then you also don't really have the opportunity for overtime! Additionally, many offices do not provide benefits! So even if you have a good hourly rate, you're paying out of pocket for insurance. This also means that many offices don't provide other benefits as well; not just Insurance. Depending on location it can be hard to get hired full time, and many hygienists work part-time at multiple offices (again, this is a generalization not the case everywhere) and because of this, you may not be eligible for paid vacation time/sick days/holidays. Hourly/salary definitely depends on your location (Midwest/OH you might be looking at $25-30/hr out of school - granted this was 9 years ago so could be more now - and maybe up to $35 after a few years; NYC you could be around $45-50/hr depending). Lots of stress on the body; leaning over all day/sitting all day; lots of repetitive motions That being said; for the degree needed/amount of time spent getting your degree and the salary, it might be worth it for some people (especially if you have a family and/or want a 9-5 with no nights/weekends/major holidays - you'll likely work Columbus day and things like that but no Christmas/New Years/Thanksgiving, etc. ). SO much of this depends on the dentist that you work for, so a lot of this is variable, but I just wanted to provide some insight and things to consider for anyone who is debating about the profession! I found dental hygiene to get very repetitive (both mentally and physically) and boring myself, but again, it's all about what you're looking for in the long term! As with anything, if you're not passionate about it, you will not enjoy it. I got very burnt out and I think I'll be much happier in nursing, but that's a personal preference of course!

hey, i just found ur comment and its super helpful and relative. what a coincidence im the same way, im a highschool student deciding between dental hygiene and nursing, and im afraid of the same thing. i feel like cleaning teeth will get boring quickly and honestly im just intrigued by the pay. but also i feel like nursing is really hard and even more stressful due to the hours and having to run around a hospital all day.

Definitely hard to get a job in Hygiene. One thing that is always over looked when discussing INCOME is the topic of "BENEFITS". I have received medical/ dental benefits from one office, it was a corporate office. They offered 1 week of paid vacation, a limit of 4 paid holidays, and scrub jackets, only. Half of medical was paid, and dental was covered @ 75 - 100%. From individual dental offices, never, NEVER medical benefits. Slim to no restorative coverage, on my self ONLY, not on family members. Holiday pay only after 1 year. If DDS took the day off, no one worked, no pay. All of this needs to be considered. My husband and I pay $1100 a month for major medical. No office calls or RX coverage! that is $13,200 a year SUBTRACTED FROM GROSS INCOME! Then, Dr wants a week off for hunting, a week off for vacation, time off for travel to someone's wedding or graduation, etc. It really cuts in to the yearly income! After you subtract $ for time off, holidays, uniforms, Medical benefits, etc, the pay is not as good as it sounds!
@RegisteredNurseRN9 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Savage Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and insight, Elizabeth. Yes, benefits is definitely something to consider before taking a job. Employers can vary quite a bit as to what they offer, even within the nursing industry. Thanks for adding that perspective.
@benjamincarson55365 жыл бұрын
If you are considering a job simply based off of benefits you probably shouldn't work at all. It's about the job you enjoy along with the salary. At the end of the day benefits can be made anywhere.

While I understand what you are saying. I believe this job is probably for someone who isn't fully dependent on one office to work for. Maybe expand your work to another office PT or on call. I hear you make more an hour that way as well. Also, to note as for benefits if you have a spouse with benefits such as an example military coverage. This job would be THE job to have. Thank you for pointing this all out though.

Kozy P because a bachelors program has more time so you can get certified in other things as well such as EFDA. Not only that but with a bachelors you can do research and teach as well so employment possibilities are broadened and not just clinical. Some dentists I’ve met prefer a BSDH RDH over associate one.

It may in some areas but in the area that I live in, no. Same average pay no matter if you have an associates or a bachelors. In my area both programs take a total of 4 years to complete. Associates degree from a dental hygiene program at a community college is normally way cheaper but more difficult to be accepted to for that reason.
