This video goes through the basic anatomy and mechanics of a dental/ surgical operating microscope. An operating microscope is a stereoscope. This allows for stereopsis or the ability to visualize an operating field in three dimensions though two eye pieces. A stereoscope allows for parallel line of sight through the use of binoculars with one main objective lens. The main components of a DOM (dental operating microscope) are the binoculars complex, the magnification changer, the objective lens and the light source. I use my current microscope for the demonstration but all microscopes have similar anatomy... although they may be managed differently in terms of where on the scope and what they look like. The operating microscope is a huge asset to dentistry in terms of improved visibility and ergonomics.

Okay, one mistake i made in my tutorial... the green filter is not for eye safety while using a laser! It’s actually to discern between blood 🩸 and tissue for surgeries! I was told this many years ago but had forgotten this. Sorry! Microscope filters for laser use are tricky and hard to come by. Some people have made their own. I suggest working with the scope company to find a solution that fits your personal needs.

that's so awesome! I love love love using the scope on children! For years i had a little screen above the scope with a video feed so that the patient could watch the procedure if they wanted and children in particular LOVED it! Helped them to sit still longer too! :) Thanks for connecting.

Hello Doctor. What is your experience with Zeiss connect app from Zeiss? Do you use it on a daily basis? What ipad model you use for that? Thanks!

Hi Claudio - great question. I have used the Zeiss connect in the past but am currently using an external camera. There have been many upgrades to the program since I used it. Although the resolution is not as high as some external camera systems, it is quite good and I believe it does have some huge conveniences in terms of acquiring and managing images/files.

Who will come and fix the celling mount flange? Is it from zeiss service engineer or we have to provide our own plumber to drill and fix the celling flange doctor?
@seattlemicroscopedentist8626
@seattlemicroscopedentist8626 2 жыл бұрын
Hi KR Dental Hospital. I apologize for not responding, been traveling for the past few weeks. The microscope company you are working with (Zeiss) should have connection with an engineer who can survey the ceiling and determine what needs to be done. Then hire a contractor who can follow the instructions from the engineer based on the spacial needs and requirements.

You're going to have to figure this out. Here in the United States we have engineers... not plumbers who manage this. A plumber is someone who deals with water and pipes... an engineer understands materials, physics, math and engineering. I would not trust a plumber. Find a builder/contractor who understands building plans and share the installation manual with them... see if they can help give you guidance.

Nice summary , I am considering investing in a scope will you discuss automated focus vs manual & if the additional cost is justified etc. ?

Thanks Sheldon for the feedback. Great to hear you are considering a microscope! Best investment in dental equipment I ever made... I have now purchased 5! I could put something together on automated focus vs manual if i can get my hands on one... I'll add it to the list. I am curious, are you an endodontist? I have a couple colleagues who have automated focus and love it ... that being said, they are both endodontists... small micro movements all day.

@@k.rdentalhospitaldindigul4506 Hi Selvaraj. Sorry, I thought i just answered that. It depends on what you are doing with the files. If you need a very high resolution for publication and lecture then i would definitely get a beam splitter and camera set up. If you are using for patient education/documentation in the chart and the social media post then i think you would be fine with the internal camera. I believe the Extaro comes with the internal camera comes already built into the scope... it is just whether or not you choose to pay the fee to activate the software... OR do your own thing

There is quite a large range depending on the number of magnification steps and the bells and whistles you choose. I purchased my first scope back in 2003 and spent $17,000. They have gone up since then but sometimes you can find them used. Old ones still work great... ask around with some of the vendors. Sometimes you can even buy a used demo from vendor shows once they retire it! My Zeiss Pico (my second scope) was exactly that.
