This video goes through the basic anatomy and mechanics of a dental/ surgical operating microscope. An operating microscope is a stereoscope. This allows for stereopsis or the ability to visualize an operating field in three dimensions though two eye pieces. A stereoscope allows for parallel line of sight through the use of binoculars with one main objective lens. The main components of a DOM (dental operating microscope) are the binoculars complex, the magnification changer, the objective lens and the light source. I use my current microscope for the demonstration but all microscopes have similar anatomy... although they may be managed differently in terms of where on the scope and what they look like. The operating microscope is a huge asset to dentistry in terms of improved visibility and ergonomics.
