DENTSIDE FORD F100 QA1 Classic Truck Rear Suspension Install

My brother-in-law stops by the shop this week to lend a hand installing the rear QA1 F100 coilover kit on the abandoned F150! Hang out with me and Phil as we talk about our favorite cars and the future of hot rodding. I'll give a brief explanation about the Watts link suspension and what you can expect from this kit. By the end of this episode the rear suspension is complete and the truck frame is ready for the front kit installation.

I’m a Falcon freak, got a 63 post, 347 w/ a Mikes Ultimate AOD, 9”, triangulated, black on black, heart attack machine. But I just picked up a 93 f150, building another 347, top loader 4spd. Every truck inspired Lightning is red, ain’t going there, red/orange w/pearl, Vic up front built 8.8, dropped 5 to 7” crager super sports 8” front 10” rear. I’m 81 and I love a hot car/truck.

The rear suspension looks great! The “car guy” conversation with your brother in law was cool. I don’t really have an era of car I like. I’m partial to Dad’s 76 F150, then my 95 F150 that I’ve had over 20 years now, since I was 16. I always liked the 66 Ford trucks (Grandpa had a couple) and I always loved the first gen Mercury Cougar- because everyone has a Mustang. Fox Mustangs are cool, I had an 03 GT I drove for a few years and loved (regret selling it now) and a bucket list car (from Dad’s car magazines growing up) a Cobra kit car. And it’s kinda funny but I view things a little different now with the family aspect. It’s not like when I grew up and we’d pile in the 76, I’m pretty sure they’d haul me to jail these days if I tried that with my kids (bummer).

And I’ll add I’ve always wanted a Bronco. Would love a 92-96, a first gen (if I win the lottery) or a second gen (but 76/77 F150 grille)

Early 70s era is my favorite, probably because this is when I got my drivers license. My favorite of that era was a 72 Impala 400, my first car bought in 79 for $750 in excellent condition with about 80k miles on it. I’d be happy today to find the same car today in good condition for $7500…that ain’t hap’n.

Love the late 60s early 70s muscle cars but I’m going pre 2006 diesel pickups without the def and emissions crap. Something to be said about an 8000 lb truck that has the potential to run with corvettes. Also like the first and second gen lightnings.

Does the QA1 stick out from the frame the same distance as the the spring and spring shackle brackets?

Good question. Honestly, I didn’t measure. If I was guessing I would say the QA1 system is just slightly wider than the factory brackets.

are the bolts on the diff center long enough to mount that bracket , seems like bolts are to short

Great eye. The bracket holes are drilled at two different diameters to accommodate a shoulder nut. The inner diameter of the shoulder nut goes nearly all the way through the bracket to account for the shorter bolt. So you have nearly the full length of the stud of thread engagement. The nuts also get loctite. If they were just nuts on the outside of the bracket you are correct they would not be long enough.

what did you do for axles?

I went with Speedway 31 spline cut to fit axles. 3.89 gear and helical limited slip differential.
