I was born in USA living in Trini. Wherever you are, when your away from your childhood place you resort to the best of memories past 😊But for many truth is there were other kinds of memories with it too encouraging us to go elsewhere 😂 What I learned to do is Never Ever Compare. Enjoy where you are for the greatness of what is in front of you. This is usually found by contributing. Contributing your friendship to others and understanding with empathy the less than ideal you may get back. All to help yourself and others find happiness within. With that attitude I've enjoyed each place I've been from that moment on. I hope this helps. Oh and please say hi to Dorothy, the scarecrow, the Lion and the Wizard of Oz 😅

patrick A I agree totally. She was treated so badly by the public, just because of skin colour/race. It's really sad. She must really be passionate about the art form to have persevered like she did. I really admire her.

There is nothing white about Denise Plumber. The drums of Africa are echoed in her Voice. I say a true Caribbean woman a descendant of African parent . A true Calypsonian.

As a little girl I grew up hearing this song, on another Caribbean island. Always loved this song. Gives me chills. Sad to learn she had it rough in the beginning because of her skin colour. She did not make herself. People just ignorant. Beautiful rendition. This is Kaiso.

The fist time I heard this song I was in a maxi taxi on my way to school and I still remember this rendition bringing tears to my eyes as a teenager. That same weekend, I was having a very heated conversation with my uncle because we Trinis do not know about doing things in half measure, with the discussion being about who was going to win Calypso Monarch. Of course the first name out of my mouth was Denyse Plummer's Nah Leaving and this was before I heard any of the other calypsos that year. I distinctly remember my uncle (now deceased) arguing with me that it was never going to happen but I guess he did not listen to the lyrics to understand how powerful this song was. Mind you this was the first and only time I ever took any real interest in the Calypso Monarch winner because I always found some of the other artists compositions to be racially divisive. If only we could all listen to the lyrics and understand the true meaning of being a Trinbagonian, diversity of culture, diversity people, diversity of thought, all coming together to make the world a better place for everyone.

Very true...her mom is black Venezuelan and her dad is white (I think Scottish or Irish). I have a friend that I went to high school with, she's Trini born (I think she's from Blemont if I do recall). She's black with Scottish decent from her grandfather. Also, I dated a guy who's white but was born and raised in Trinidad (I don't considered him white though). Trini people comes I'm different nationalities and skin tones. So at the end of the day, they're Trini. #Period!!!

We just lost another wonderful icon. This song struck a chord with me right away back when she first sang it. She outlined the darkness of Trinidad and Tobago and pushed forth the light of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹. Beautifully done. Alas, the ignored climbing death rate trail claimed her. May she contribute to the awakening and inspiring the living of actually doing something to stop opposing but doing something to cease the ever powerful Robber of Life spirit deeply embedded in many women and men. Thank you for your contributions Denyse Plummer making my stay of greater value..

Lyrics NAH LEAVING Performed by Denyse Plummer They say mih country so stressful, so tense With race hate, young jail bait, too much violence Girl pack up and go, this sweet Trinbago I tell dem no way (no way) How de people small-minded, macocious and loud Of bobol and scandal they boastful and proud Yet somehow I see, all this foolery As window dressing, dey still ah blessing. You see ah just eat ah curry-cue, peas, rice and cascadou Blue crab and callaloo, mih neighbor just gimme Nah leaving (nah leaving) Meh navel string so deep and freedom doh come cheap. Where else in de world you know sweet pan and calypso People just overflow two days in the street Nah leaving (nah leaving) Is here wey conceive me, is here ah go dead. I see a people creative who must overcome Make magic from old steel, from rusty oil drum So why should I fear, some tears here and there I tell dem no way (no way) Camaraderie so special like natural instinct Dey meet you by de river, is come take ah drink Outspoken but kind, no silent bad mind So forget New York and and all de old talk. You see ah just drink some babash brew, puncheon rum and Mountain Dew Ah hot plate ah Pelau too mih macomere just give me Nah leaving (nah leaving) Meh navel string so deep and freedom doh come cheap. Where else in de world you know, jump high then wine down low And if you don't get on so, dey watch you ------ Nah leaving (nah leaving) Is here wey conceive me, is here ah go dead. Mayaro, Maracas Bay (nah leaving) De Savannah wey children play (nah leaving) De sorrel, de mauby bark (nah leaving) De corn soup, de bake and shark (nah leaving) De Oval, see Lara bat (nah leaving) De picong, de tit-for-tat (nah leaving) De ritual of Carnival (nah leaving) De Soca Chutney Bacchanal (nah leaving) I wake up one morning and before I stretch Is fry bake, ---- doubles, meh nostril done ketch And there for my view, an ocean so blue I'm going no where (no where) Hummingbirds and black birds dat sing in de trees Chaconia and spices dat waft in de breeze Wild meat by de grap, agouti and lappe In forest grazing, it so amazing. You see ah just watch ah football match wey Trini and Yankee clash So much ----- mih posse lash, mih head still dizzy Nah leaving (nah leaving) Mih navel string so deep and freedom doh come cheap. Where else in de world you know milk and de honey flow Vagrants does bend down low and dance in ah drain Nah leaving (nah leaving) Is here wey conceive me, is here ah go dead. Barb wire, roll wire, we living in jail But somehow I know, true peace will prevail As folks will recall, our problems are small I'm going no where (no where) De heart of my people is of solid gold Like Soca dey move you with rhythm and soul So who want to leave, because dey believe Dat out dey easy, I say dey crazy. Manning and Gypsy, [nah leaving] The bacchanal in UNC [nah leaving] -------- and Skinner Park [nah leaving] They eat you like a bake and shark [nah leaving] Iwer and Super [nah leaving] Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah leaving Nah leaving...........
