After all these years i only just noticed that Chris Taylor and Christopher Bear was there too, They're so amazing. This song has been with me since my father passed away.. Thank you guys.

Knowing this was written for his father who passed a year prior to recording makes this incredibly moving.

Daniel Rosen is one of the most amazing musicians

This song is what I played over and over through my psychosis. It was the part, "And if you listen.. you can hear the waves.." Idk why, but during the endless Demonic screaming, laughter, and fiends howling outside my window.. its what I hung onto. It was my anchor tethering me to reality. I'm now schizophrenic but I'll always cherish this song. And Daniel of course

i really like this. these guys have created such a unique collection of dark, lyrically interesting pop songs.

I wish Department of Eagles would keep going...I love the earlier Grizzly Bear albums, but the latest stuff (Shields and Painted Ruins) did very little for me. You can hear clearly on Yellow House and Veckatimest what's a "Rossen" song and what's a "Droste" song. Those albums really take you through a journey, if you listen front to back. There's a lot of contrast and development. But with the more recent stuff, it sounds more like 50/50 on every song. It all gets blended together. Rossen and Droste not only have a different style of writing, but a different aesthetic entirely. Rossen's music has this kind of eerie 'emptiness' to it. Like it would be appropriate to play around a campfire, in-between ghost stories. Droste's music has little of that 'campfire' feeling, being more inspired by 80's/90's pop. Both are good in their own right. But mixed together, I don't know...
@votto674 жыл бұрын
I always preferd Rossen"s songs over Droste's tunes....you can always tell it is a song Rossen wrote. I don't mind the other stuff, but I love the Rossen material....."Little Brother" on Yellow house is a good example........many others as well.

I dont know if you break down most of the new albums, what's clearly a percussion based pop song (droste) and everything else being Rossens, if that's true, then Dans got more songs than Ed on both. It seems like sometimes in between making the song, Dan decides this would be a good spot for Ed to come in. Not sure if it works like that, but that's how we did it in my band days Ed brought them pop sensibilities, and at the time of failing labels, a better way to survive as a musician. More notoriety anyways

Much agreed. We that enjoy GOOD music that is pushin the envelope, so many tend to be elitist and snarky. I know Bear isn't IN the band but neither was Clapton when he laid down tracks for the Beatles. Chill and Don't Look Down.

Am I right or Ed Droste is such a talented guy that he got a complete and awesome band with other name to get to into his one-man band Grizzly Bear?
@jhansenhlebica60804 жыл бұрын
Not right. Grizzly Bear is very clearly creatively half Ed Droste and half Daniel Rossen. Then Department of Eagles is creatively half Daniel Rossen and half Fred Nicolaus.

@bengus_khan8 жыл бұрын
it sounds like he's using a digitech whammy on the one octave up setting.
@richgiduck80737 жыл бұрын
Fred is using an Electro Harmonix P.O.G. (Polyphonic Octave Generator), the original version not the newer POGs. It also looks like he might be using some type of Boss pedal (a digital delay perhaps), and a EHX Tube Zipper. I can't tell what his first pedal is...

I would prefer listen to this for rest of my life. Because this is really what the music is. Living and realistic, voices, guitars. Because modern so-called "music" is really awful and irritating. What is the matter with you, people? Why do you always attach to some stupid meanstream terms? Why does it happening all the time? Funk that, really. Just enjoy what really makes you feel enjoyed and happy. It's very simple.

Daniel's influence and contributions to Grizzly Bear are incredibly special I agree. But Ed's input is essential too. It's a little like the old Lennon OR McCartney question. The fact that they both write AND sing AND play means there is a healthy competition between them to reach ever higher heights. They also temper one another's over indulgent moments and act as each other's quality control. I really would like a new DoE album though, In Ear Park is just gorgeous.
