Earth Sciences play a major role in the world today - covering everything from climate change to hazard mitigation and the ability of the ocean to support life, it has the capacity to affect everything that we do. As a research focused organization, publicly funded by the Swiss Federation, ETH Zurich Department of Earth Sciences is committed to understanding all aspects of Geosciences and contributing to all these key questions. In my country we've a saying: swiss mapping. Once upont a time a group of swiss mapped a large zone without get down from the truck. They couldn't recognize rocks on the field. A geologist that cannot recognize rocks, can't be called a geologist.
