Hi there, ETH Alumni here. I think this video perfectly explains why ETH took you. You had a goal, you had a plan and you implemented it. If that isn't problem solving then I don't know what is. Remember the swiss saying: "Everybody cooks with water". I have met some brilliant people at ETH but if you see how they achieved their brilliant results its rather industriousness than genius that got them there.

@@SP-qi8ur I'm not Swiss and have never heard this saying before, but I think it's about the fact that you don't need exceptional ingredients to be able to make great food. Probably meaning in this context that you don't need exceptional abilities to achieve something great. While I agree with the message, I think there is underestimation here of the ability to focus 100%, to pursue goals, to work really hard, to be extraordinarily self-disciplined - THESE abilities have to be very much above average. If you have them, you'll have decent success no matter what field you choose. They can definitely be developed to a great extend, no doubt, but I think some personality types are naturally predisposed to have them "by default".

When you reach out to Professors through E-mail or regular mail, what exactly do you say in the message? I know it usually has the typical "I've done this research, I'm very enthusiastic and interested in this research, I also heard you do the exact same research as I do" and then what? Can you tell me what you usually say in the end of your messages? I usually end it by saying "I would love to know more about your lab and further research opportunities as a grad student" but I don't know if that's the best thing to say. Thanks in advance.

Another great and helpful video! Any tips on looking for research areas that are researched at certain universities? So like if I want to go into dark matter research would I have to Google various universities until I found the ones that do this research, or is there a more efficient way of doing this? :)
@RiverTechJess
@RiverTechJess 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks TheBlueInfinite! I'm glad you find the video helpful. Hmmm.. I would say maybe going on google scholar and typing in dark matter. I just did this quickly and there was a paper published recently called "Particle dark matter: evidence, candidates and constraints," it's the 2nd most cited paper and published reletively recently by researchers at Oxford. So they must have a nice group. Honestly, what I would do is first decide where you want to go and start looking there. If there are no good groups there, then move onto the next place. Hope this was helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Great tips thanks for the video! I am planning to apply to ETH for next year at the moment. Do you know if they receive GRE scores electronically? I haven't taken them yet and the deadline is December 15, so if they only take scores by mail, ETS said that would take 4-6 weeks so I definitely can't make that deadline. But if they receive scores electronically, they get it instantly so I can still make the deadline. Any idea?

I agree to your thoughts regarding generalized assessment tests like GRE etc. They don't reflect upon applicants' competence in programmes they are applying for. Then,especially anything could go wrong with test takers on the morning of the test day even if they are very good at taking test so quite a luck is involved. Therefore,such tests shouldn't be given weight over other things in student applications and unis are realizing this.Indeed infact, despite GRE being a US based test, some graduate programmes in the US are now not giving much reverence to the GRE scores.Especially,MIT doesn't set a Gre score min threshold as admission criteria and as far as I know,their EE and CS programmes do not require or accept any GRE scores from applicants.

Thank you so much for making this video! I am also studying at McGill (but in Science) and thinking about applying to ETH. I mostly have questions about Zurich, how the city is, how do you compare Zurich to Montreal (I have been living in Quebec all my life so it can be intimidating to live somewhere else) in terms of cultural activities, city life, etc.? It would be great if you can do videos about Swiss life/Zurich life :)
@ellikossmann9148
@ellikossmann9148 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know Montreal but since I live in/grew up in Zurich and noone has answered your question I figured I could help you out. First off Zurich is really beautiful with lots of great outdoor places to just sit and talk and enjoy and other stuff (as a comparison I lived in Seattle for a year and to my "standard" encountered few places like that). The city itself is pretty busy, it's by far the biggest city in Switzerland and most people who work in Zurich also live here or around the lake, which means the city doesnt get that emptiness in the evening other big cities do. Within Switzerland Zurich has the Stereotype of being really arrogant, (I don't know where that came from and I dont think it's true at all) however you wont encounter that openess you often find in American cities (and yes I know Montreal and Quebec are in Canada;)). That doesn't mean Swiss/Zurich people are mean, they're just really polite and want to respect your "Personal Space". I don't know what you mean by cultural activities but Switzerland in general has plenty of really traditional "festivals" we take very seriously ;) meaning everyone dresses up etc., if you want to look into one in Zurich google "Sächsilüte" (basically we burn a snowman to chase winter away and determine how the summer is going to be but with costumes according to our "guild (?)" And it's really cool). There are other great outdoor activities in the Zurich area (most of them include hiking or swimming in the lake) everyone can participate in and if you go to ETH you will become a part of the ASVZ, which is Kind of a gym for students but they have tons of different classes like rock climbing, ballet and other types of dancing, Pilates, weight lifting etc. Included in your Semester fee. Also if your from Montreal I'm gonna assume you speak French. That is generally great because it is one of the National languages and technically everyone should understand it, however Zurich is in the German speaking part, just so you know, you can try to talk to people in French but some might not understand you, be aware that you might in that sense encounter a language barrier. I dont know if this answers your questions, I hope it helps 😬 if you have any other questions feel free to ask. In general, I think Zurich is great and you can assume that the people you meet at University (and trust me, you will meet people really fast because of events) are going to help you settle in and welcome you. I told you the 2 negative things I could think of (+ living here is expensive) that would be arguments against coming, if that really bothers you, I would consider choosing a different city if you're okay with it you should be fine (also you get used to everything ;)). Good luck

@RiverTechJess 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Sophia! First, Elli, thanks so much for writing such a thoughtful answer. Everything that Elli said about Zurich is spot on. In terms of difference with Montreal, they’re completely different. They could be more different actually. Zurich is moralize the size of Vancouver (it’s actually smaller, 400000ppl) whereas I think the island of MTL is 1.5mio? Honestly, Zurich is kinda boring if you compare it to montreal😜 it doesn’t mean I don’t like it, but there’s just waaayyy less stuff going on here than in MTL. Ya they have a few festivals here, but nothing compared to the 2-5 festivals per week in the summer in Mtl. People hang out by the lake here which is beautiful but it’s not tamtams;) the biggest thing for me was the food. we have AMAZING food in mtl from every country. Here the food is very expensive and there aren’t as many options as in mtl. So all of that being said, I love it here and I’m not ready to move. But when I do move back to Canada, I’ll live in mtl😜

Hey Kartik! Ya for sure. Basically I wrote that I'm applying to the school. I would also read some papers by the professor (you have to do quite a bit of research) and try to relate it to my research (or any of the work I've done in the past) to show why this professor's work interests me.:)

Did u apply for a TA or RA position? i'm kind of confused about your application🤔. I watched sum of your vids and i think u did really a great job in your bachelor degree👍. some of my friends which had too much less experience than u got in to great universities in canada and us as a TA or RA. My question is why you did not continue to study in canada or us as a TA or RA(or even continue in your bachelor uni). Or didu apply and didnot get a position?. The reason that i'm asking is i want to apply for a master position in canada or us and i want to know if i'm qualified or not. I have a Bsc in mechanical engineering and a master in renewable engineering(my master was more like a professional training program rather than a research). I also worked in the field of reverse engineering for a year. Do u think i have a chance for us or canada? I have another question about how u specialized in the field of combustion and cfd simulation? Did u learn it during your bachelor or u learned it during your master? Cuz u said u changed your field of research after first semster. Sorry if i asked a lot of questions

the GRE's are the Graduate Records Examinations. It's a multiple choice standardized test that a lot of US and European universities (for international students) require. Grades aren't anything. I think your experience and who you know is more important:)

What were the minimum GRE results when you applied ? Now they are Analytical 3.5 (50%), Quantitative 165 (90%) and Verbal 155 (70%). You mentioned you obtained around 75% on maths, but which category? I mean, did you fulfill the minimum GRE Score required? I hope, u see this message or someone who can help me :)

There are consecutive master programme(mechanical engineering) and specialized master programme(Robotics , system and control, energy sciences and technology) in ETH. Is there a big reason that you chose consecutive master programme(mechanical engineering)? Thank you for reading.

Thanks for this video, I'm sending my application for masters in Physics next week and I hope I'll get in! I'm a bit worried though, I got pretty good grades in my undergrad (top 10%) but my thesis wasn't really research heavy, it was rather pogramming but I actually realized Id rather want to do experimental research. From my experience with ETH, you have two cards to play with them. Either you have a "classic" profile like yours with researching experience and so on, so you need to put an emphasis on that and be pretty good at it, and that way it's pretty competitive, or you have a more "unique" profile and in that case (like I had) you don't need to send that much emails and so on because you stand out on your own anyway. To make it more clear I got in computer science, and there you either have to be a really good computer scientist, with very often the need to have internships/research thesis and so on, or you need to be good in something else (in my case maths)and justify why it's actually relevant for you to do computer science as a supplement and that seems to work well (but it is less applicable to everyone). It also seems that where you come from actually matters. If they know where you come from, then everything is either easier or harder depending on the reputation. That helps a lot for students from European universities I think. Just saying this as a complementary comment for wild card profiles seeking help.

Honestly, I don't think the school matters (I made a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGGYZYKhl7yXsNk). The job opportunities of international students in switzerland are very few. they only hire very experienced people. Your project sounds cool! I think it's good but you never know
