In the early 80's I was standing in my suburban Pennsylvania driveway when I heard music coming from the second story window of the house next door. I was maybe 8 or 9 years old at the time. The song was People are People. From that moment on I became a fan for life. This is so very cool. I really wish I could have been there. I was born in the wrong country. Thank you.

Everything Counts was released before People Are People in 1983 from the previous album. This was the first single I heard by them and subsequently bought Construction Time Again. A week later I bought Speak and Spell and a week after this A Broken Frame. When Some Great Reward came out, I bought it on date of release and continued to do the same with Black Celebration and when it came to Music for the Masses, I bought it on tape, LP and CD. BC & MFTM bought from Virgin Megastore Oxford Street because I worked close by. When Black Celebration was released, the front window at Virgin Megastore had 3D images of the album created to advertise the album. When I went to the Black Celebration concert at Wembley, I was invited to attend a party with Martin Gore the night after and never went. I put this down to my age. I was in my late teens and getting home was difficult. However I still think it was a big mistake. I still support the band, but will not attend the big venues. Recently saw Dave Gahan at the London Colleseum last December and shook hands and briefly chatted with Peter Gordeno. That was a unique experience and seeing groups or artists in intimate venues far better than huge stadiums. I was not impressed with people walking in and out through the last show I saw DM at the Millenium Stadium and just taking selfies to say they were at a DM event. Lots of people didn't recognise the songs and some that did were spoiling the show trying to sing. Looking forward to the new album. I've adapted and understood the reason the music has changed over the years.

The Bridge House was the seminal rock venue in Canning Town East London E16 and the first pub in the world with its own record label. Throughout the seventies and eighties it was a regular home to such bands as Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, The Blues Band and Secret Affair as well as the Bridge House generated Wasted Youth. The Bridge House shut its doors to live music in 1982 and was bulldozed into the ground a couple of years later...

Thanks for sharing this very early recording! This is two years before I even heard DM on vinyl. It's a real thrill to hear early versions of some of the songs that became later hits. Wonderful early photos too --- for some reason it never occurred to me that DM had to have done time playing in pubs, competing with earnest patron conversations, on makeshift setups ... really fun to see! Great perspective ... So glad you all put in the hard days so you could make it and share your talent with such a wide audience. Again, thanks so much for sharing!
