It's a perfect album closer. Ultra works so well as an album in one listen, in a dark room with a candle. Give it a try! Even the instrumentals make sense as interludes. Don't listen to the Alan fanclub, there are great songs from Ultra to Memento Mori, even though Violator & SOFAD will always be the best albums as a whole. There is still DM without Alan, but there is no DM without Dave or Martin. They became an even bigger live band from the Exciter Tour onwards. On to Only When I Lose Myself, Surrender & Headstar - a stand alone singe from the Singles compliations. I love OWILM & Surrender! Then Exciter which is better than people say. Keep up the great reactions 😀

Exciter is a bit too "experimental" for many fans though. Like, as a huge synths enthusiast, and ambient music, I absolutely love that album, maybe one of my top faves, but always hearing that this almbum is "weak" or something.

I agree that Ultra is great, I can only assume that Alan still had a residual impact t on the band even if he had left. But since then it's been all downhill with the exception of one song here and there...

Insight is just a perfect song -- what a journey Ultra is, from Barrel of a Gun to this... so uplifting. I have always thought this album was underappreciated and underrated; it's so good to see the love for it in these comments. I would feel complete if Dave and Martin brought this out to close out the next leg of the tour.

Considering the whole background of this album, this particular song is a perfect ending to it. Lyrically it can be interpreted as "we should move on even though Alan left us". The fire still burns!

Like everyone said: This is how to end perfect album... Album that should have never been released - but Depeche Mode made it. Again and again... I played it for thousand times. So many memories to that new era and lifetime memory to concert in Prague on 15th September 1998 - my first and best concert in my life, so much energy from band and from audience!!! Check Only When I Lose Myself single (with Surrender & Headstar) - important part of Ultra album. Thanks for your reaction, keep on rolling, greetings from hot Prague ;-)

Definitely another BANGER Seph! My 3rd favorite song off this great album. Can't wait for Exciter next. I know it's an unpopular opinion for most and especially for a life long fan since 1983 like I am, but I love Exciter. It's actually No.5 on my list of favorite DM albums. Incase anyone is wondering my order is, 1 SOFAD 2 Violater 3 Black Celebration 4 MFTM 5 Exciter 6 Some Great Reward 7 Playing the Angel 8 Construction Time Again 9 SOTU 10 The Landscape is Changing 11 Memento Mori.
@johnj28
@johnj28 Жыл бұрын
Interesting as # 10 is not the name of an Album but a song on Construction Time Again. It is always hard for me to Rank the Albums. I kind of lump Some Great Reward through Ultra as my favorite DM period. So all of those albums are really special to me (SGR, BC, MFTM, Vio., SoFaD, and Ultra). After those I would put Playing the Angel followed by Memento Mori, Construction Time Again, and Exciter. But I love all the albums.

I’ve never really thought about the meaning of this song, but I like your interpretation, Seph. Even if we don’t love the person anymore, they may have hurt you so badly that it’s hard to move on. Then we hear Martin’s simple message from the background: Gotta give love. We do. We shouldn’t live our lives in bitterness or fear. We have to open up and give love to move on.

As a lifelong DM fan (since I was 13 in 1982) I always felt this song was a beacon. We thought maybe DM were finished after Alan left. We didn't know if we'd ever hear another Martin lyric again. 😔 Then this albumn came out years later. And this song, to me, said 'Fear not. Depeche Mode continues. The fire still burns.' This song touched my very soul when I first heard it.

Seth, I absolutely adore how you are skating through DM one album at a time. It's methodical and glorious to watch. But you must remember there were YEARS between these albums at times with so much unknown. We never knew... is this.. the last time... 😲 Every new albumn was a dream come true. A miracle from the music gods themselves. And look as them now. In the R&R Hall of Fame. Yes, they lost Fletch. But they've been through so much. They lost Vince, they lost Alan... That's why in their new album, the video for Ghosts Again is so profound. It's just Martin and Dave now. Momento Mori (Remember, We Are All Mortal)

I wonder if Dave and especially Martin thought it was so terrible that Alan left. They could have prevented Alan's dissatisfaction at an early stage, and they probably could have persuaded Alan in the end to stay by simply admitting their shortcomings and giving Alan a new and better deal. There was irritation between Alan and Martin regarding the direction the group should take, Martin was not always happy with Alan's ideas regarding how Martin's songs should be shaped with soundscape and sound. - Martin was not at all fond of the way Alan (and Flood) had shaped Martin's original ballad "Enjoy the silence", for example. The whole thing can be boiled down to the fact that Alan did not feel that he received the recognition of the others, not least for the work he put into studio work. One must not forget that one less band member means one less to share the financial merits with..

(0:13) I love your snowflake blanket and its many uses. Here to wipe the sweat off your brow. And during the "Bridge Over Troubled Water (Live)" reaction, to wipe away your tears. My favorite part of this song are Martin's verse vocal harmony lines where he holds the note and pitches it up as Dave's vocal stops. Absolutely exquisite. And it looks like you picked this out too. (1:01) "This is a soul dance embracing *me*..." (1:28) "This is the first chance to put things *right*..." (2:51) "Wisdom of ages rush over *me*..." (3:03) "Heighten my senses enlighten *me*..." (2:09) "It's hard to move on. It's hard to move on from a relationship, ya know. It's like this song is trying to say that, you want me to move on and I don't know if I'm completely ready, even though I have to. It's like... but it's not easy." This is the question that keeps recurring. Can you walk away from the one you love? (5:02) "These lyrics are... I don't know... kind of hopeful, in a way. I kinda feel a bit hopeful. But you still have to move on even if you... especially if it's them that broke up with you. I think that's what's happening here on this song. It's like someone's broke up with them, and they're like, well, I still... I still got feelings for you. And that's hard... that's hard to do...that is... that feeling's horrid. It's like you still want them, but they don't want you. It's hard. That's hard..." Oh man, Seph. You just about lose it here when you frown and say "I still... I still got feelings for you. And that's hard... that's hard to do..." It's clear that you are recalling a past memory. There's a brief sorrow crossing your face before the song kicks back in with the uplifting lyric "you gotta give love, you gotta give love...", and a smirk and a half smile return to your face before resolving to smiles and dancing. (5:44) "The fire still burns...whatever you do...the world still turns". And then you join Dave, singing "I'm talking to you now..." as you point to the camera. Do you think she's been watching?

Rather overlooked track. But Martin did resurrect it in some live shows where he sings main, and Peter Gordeno, their touring keyboardist since the Ultra days, sings the high part. Yet another case of a man with a deep voice singing high. This and Home are two songs that get the audience by the end (gotta give love...). And the big silence by the end is the customary bridge to the secret track that's always fun to realize there are in discs. "Wait, I was doing the dishes, what is this song I've never heard in my fourth time listening to it?"

The thing with Depeche Mode is that they don't follow anyone. They have their own slant on things. They follow their own path. Violator and SOFAD was their take on the current music at the time. But cleverly done. This album is possibly then finding themselves after turbulent times. Retrospective, open, honest and cleansing for their souls.

It's tricky with music, what some people like doesn't go well with others, etc. "Insight" is a song that I personally should probably like, the sound and atmosphere of this is "Depeche-like good". I remember trying and trying to like this song when the record came out. But I didn't quite manage it. It's probably due to the fact that I find the very core, the song, quite weak actually. The melody doesn't strike my chords, so to speak. In comparison to the previous two records' closing songs; "clean" and "higher love" I find "insight" and its melody rather dull and insipid.
