I almost got fired from my first job because of this video. I was a busboy in a restaurant in 1985 (17 years old) and they had a few TVs scattered around the place. This video came on and I stopped dead in my tracks to watch it (no sound, by the way). I must have been asked (nay demanded) 4 times to get back to work... but I couldn't move. At the time, I thought that this may have been my only chance to see the video for one of my most favorite songs. I've seen the video 100s of times and have yet to grow tired of it. It's one of the best videos ever made. Please let Mr. Care know this. Thank you. You're the best!!!

One of the magic things concerning Shake The Disease is the sharing of the vocal parts between Dave and Martin. It worked wonderfully on Everything Counts. They did it again on People Are People and Shake The Disease. In fact the "Understand Me" bit by Martin is an echo of the "I can't understand" bit in People Are People. I simply love it when both voices come together in a song. They should have done that more later on their career.

"Shake the Disease"...what can I say? This was "THE" song that got me into Depeche Mode. Here's how it happened: In 1989 I was in a Discothèque in Paris with my good friend. We saw two very cute girls and tried to dance with them but they ignored us. So we started dancing by ourselves and the DJ suddenly played this otherworldly music that was amazingly hypnotic! That music must have also done something to the girls because they started dancing with us. I didn't know the name of the song but the melody stuck with me for months until I heard it again - It was a song named "Shake the Disease" by some band called Depeche Mode. The rest is history.

I simply adore this song. Looking forward to the interview - there are already interesting questions about the band's involvement in the initial ideas behind those video clips. It seems to me that the world of DM, as depicted in most of their music videos, is a very different, strange, cold, dark, fairy-tale, magical world. I'm fascinated by it.

Three years ago I had the opportunity to come up with an alternative program for a pre-high school class. I decided to divide them in groups and gave them the assignment to remake different music videos as close as possible. Shake the Disease was one of them. One of my points was to help them appreciate the art of doing music videos. It was interesting to see the results but they didnt come close. Even the scene with Martin Gore in the room with the mirror and sink or the telephone was hard for them. I got to hear a lot of Depeche though while they practised it.

Question for Peter (Shake the Disease video) - on the first scene, there's a pink plastic flamingo and some flowers by the window. Was that the reference to their Speak and Spell album cover? 2nd question (Stripped) - Did you get the idea about hammers from DM's Construction Time Again album cover? Final question (It's Called a Heart) - Was it filmed at a maize maze? If Shake the Disease was filmed in Docklands, it was during the time they were building Docklands Light Railway. Full Metal Jacket was filmed in Docklands in the 80's, too. I like 'It's Called a Heart', very catchy. Maybe the song sounds a bit like Thompson Twins (bongo bit)?? Thanks for making this video.

Great teaser Vaughn. No one else is doing this kind of in-depth coverage so well done. Love the sample sound part of the video too. Q. Where was the house in the video? Q. Who chose the house's wallpaper? Think if Hounslow is in the running for location maybe the house was there or the warehouse. To my knowledge Hounslow doesn't have loading cranes or a river like the video. Also with the cranes you were near in your post, maybe measure one crane and see if a 3rd would fit in-between the 2 existing ones... Amazing you've got the interview with Peter Care. Just amazing!

Plot twist...remove But Not Tonight and put Shake the Disease as the final track. I know But Not tonight is not on the original album sequence but never really thought that track fit with the mode and tone of the album. I know some like its more "positive" ending to the album but I think Shake the Disease would have worked there too. Wow I just realized as I was tired of typing Shake the DIsease that if you just put STD... perhaps Dave was enjoying too many women on tour? But I digress...lol... Anyway I have always loved that track and its incredible use of reverb and I guess a spacious feeling on the vocals of Martin in his iconic "Understand Meeeeee" parts. Hi, Vaughn! Another great video, thanks! In the US, the singles compilation was more obviously a milestone rather than an endpoint, given that it was called “Catching Up with Depeche Mode.” But in a way it really WAS the closing of a chapter-IMO Black Celebration was a turning point/point of no return. I am SO excited about your interview with Peter Care. And excited for you! My question is really about his influences. The video for “Shake the Disease” really does produce a sense of dis-ease... the Cabaret Voltaire videos have that, too (and ABC’s “Be Near Me” has some of those interesting angles as well), but it’s REALLY prominent in this particular song. I have my own inkling-years after seeing this video, I watched “The Third Man” (EDIT directed by Carol Reed, starring Orson Welles) and was so reminded of the use of angles and the feeling they produce in the viewer. Anyway that is what I’ve always wondered re: his work. “It’s Called a Heart” reminds me of Children of the Corn!

This track was originally recorded for a new album and not for a compilation album. There is a gap of six months between the release of the single and Singles 81-85, similar to the gap between "People Are People" and "Some Great Reward", "Strangelove" and "Music for the Masses" and finally "Personal Jesus" and "Violator" From Simon Spence's book: " Before heading to the USA, the band went to Hansa to record a new single, Shake The Disease. The single was intended as the start of a new album. But when it stalled at No 18 on the UK chart, the album sessions were abandoned." "It's Called a Heart" was however written and recorded only with Singles 81-85 in mind.

As always, I love the content on your channel. There's nothing that even comes close out there. My first question is did Peter have a specific vision in mind when he heard Shake the Disease, It's Called a Heart, & Stripped on what he wanted to do for each video or was it a collaborative effort with him and the band? Second question: Whose idea was it to bang on various pieces of metal, etc to emphasize parts of the song musically and visually as a whole? I'd love to know more about the reason why the apparatus that was used to make the guys rotate and what each member thought about it, especially if anyone had issue with feeling like they were going to crash to the ground. (I have not done any research, I like surprises and can't wait to hear what Peter has to say) It's Called a Heart: the video has a tribal tech feel, yet they shot the video in a corn field. Why was this location chosen for the video and what are they swinging around their heads while walking through the field?

Ok some geek talk now; In between the chorus and the 2nd verse is an instrumental part. At the end of that, just before Dave starts singing again, the chord changes and only the bass plays 5 G notes. That small detail is one of the many examples of what makes this arrangement so brilliant to me. But for some strange reason, live they don’t play it like the studio recording. Live, in that section, the song continues with the previous chord (Dm) and goes into the 2nd verse from that. I’m talking about the full band live versions of the song, listen to 101 for example. Looking forward to the other parts of your informative in-depth review!

Alan Wilder on the filming process used by Care to obtain that effect: “The promo uses free fall sequences that make for a fairly simple optical illusion. The subject is strapped to a motorised pole that runs through the back of his jacket. As the pole rotates, taking you with it, the camera follows at the same angle giving the impression that the subject is remaining still and everything in the background is actually moving. Peter also used another similar trick where the camera is attached to you on a kind of stiff harness - no cameraman [is involved]. As you move around with the camera, you again appear still while the background moves around.” ;-)

For peter- what did you think about the song shake the disease ?
@jaeeproductions4 жыл бұрын
I think that they are on a camera gimbal...that is attached to the camera. Think of the contraption as being a half rectangle--with the machinery being mounted on the rig with the camera. I've examined the shot, and they changed the speed--at least the one where the band it walking. You'll notice--their walking looks unnatural, as Martin tilts with the camera. It looks like they shot it at 9 frames per second for some reason, and asked the band to walk very slowly. In post, they edited it at 24 frames per second, thus slowing down the shot. This was likely due to the gimbal moving slowly, thus the director and the cinematographer wanted to make the shot appear to be filmed in 24 frames per second. Said would account for the stuttering/staccato movements of the band as they walk, due to the altered speed of the camera frames; 9 frames per second would cause that, as it is very fast in-camera--creating a cartoon like look (Ala the first musical segment in the live-action version of "Aladdin"). As the camera tilts, the band member that is attached to the gimbal tilts. Think of it as a pole attachment, that a person is strapped to...thus the pole and a back support is rigged behind the band member who is attached to the pole. These days, that shot can be faked using special effects. I've seen some kids do it.

So my question for Peter is that when I saw a documentary about the making of Shake the Disease video, I saw footage of Martin wearing something which looked liked lots of cameras pointing towards him? Where they doing some form of motion capture?

Hi! Ask Peter about how the movie Pi (1998) claims to have invented the walking-with-camera technique used in the Shake the Disease video!

Hey VG - love your videos delving deep into such 'taboo' subjects , and my 1 question for Mr. Care is 'Who was doing the styling (clothes, hair) ?' Did DM themselves decide on the leather gears, Martin Gore must get credit to that ?

DUUUDE! 10K🤘👏👏👏👏. FELICITACIONES! From Argentina. Very cool new studio, couldn't watch yet MFTM videos. In the late 80's it was still hard to find DM albums here, even cassettes, (fortune to get them too), but in some records stores, if you were there almost everyday, they will make you a 30', 60', 90' mix tapes😃 Every time i hear the 1:00 mix you used to start this video, it takes me back to those days. In 1985 i found DM, i was 12, Everything Counts was the video and the name of the show was(check out the 1st letters from the 3 words😉) Música Total Videos😂😂😂, but it was amazing😁 80's 3er. World baby. Peace

Awesome vid as always. Question you could ask is "did any of the band members contribute in any ideas for making the music video or did they give you full creative control?"

Well, I would like to know how did they bring so many cars and destryed in video. I was wondering why would they use cars mostly from communist countries.

Hi Vaughn, in the video It looks like the band have a camera attached to them, possibly around their neck with a close up of their own face in a weird focus in some points of the video. I think it was mainly Al and Fletch. How was this done? Also, there are 2 videos that I know of for this single release, the other being a straight forward stage / band playing. Regards Nick. Great work, love the work you do.

Also for Peter, who’s that guy dancing in the small tv on the It’s called a heart video, is it Elvis?? And what does that have to do with the video itself?
@sonofhibbs44254 жыл бұрын
Just answering this from watching Vaughn’s interview with Peter Care today ... they are film snippets of some documentary about kids in (Japan?, China?) an Asian country taking on and imitating western music stars. They were dressed up as Elvis. I can’t remember exactly, but for anyone interested watch the great interview!

I agree with you about Its Called a Heart. I think it was a good song. But we have to remember that they were darkening their sound at that time. It's Called a Heart was maybe a step back. But good nonetheless.

A question for Peter - In the video for Shake The Disease there is some footage where the camera follows the person falling. Was the camera strapped to a similar device that the band members were on? I have always love this song and video, can't wait for the interview Vaughan 👍👍

Excellent stuff. History what equipment did DM use and was it completely made up from samples that they had recorded. One for Peter how was the falling down part of the video done. Fantastic show keep up the great work my friend 😎👍

Hi,regarding analyzing the song structure you could perhaps also mention the key and scale a track is in,does it stay only within one scale as it progresses and are all chords diatonic and using notes only from the scale,it of course wouldn't have to be an elaboration so as not to bore the viewers;) otherwise great job as always and your free improvisation is a great idea, cheers!!

Thank you!! I'd love to but I have no real theoretical knowledge of music therefore scales and chords etc are not mentioned in my explanations. VG :-)

Hi Vaughn, as usual amazing video, can't wait for the piano/vocal covers. I do agree with "It's called a heart", it's terribly simple but the sound is great and has a great mood in it. To me, the problem with BC and most of DM album (except SOFAD and Violator) is that there are a few very weak tracks in it so, my very personal opinion is that BC's tracklist is not that perfect, they could have done a bit better with those tracks. Question for Mr Care: what's the meaning behind the falling thing in 'Shake the disease? They also fall upside towards the of the video, it must be some kind of overimposed video.
