To be precise Split mix you can call easily as the extended version. When you listen to the ending of NLMDA on the album but loud, you can hear that this is fade out, not cut. This is fade out of the same bridge as it goes on the split mix version. So same song but longer, same video but longer. Regarding American clip of Strangelove. The song is not the same as you can hear on a single from 87 or on the album. In 88 Sire asked to remix Strangelove once again, shoot a video and released as single in 88 once again (possibly to earn some $$ due to the second visit of depeche MODE in North America in 88). That's why we call it Strangelove 88 and not count to the single from 87. Maybe I'm wrong but I think 88 version was remixed by Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders.

Superb comment 👍🏻 Here’s more info on the various tracks you mention. The ‘Split Mix’ is not an extended version, the ‘Split Mix’ was used (and faded, as you correctly point out) due to the album being way behind schedule. This is also the reason the album version of ‘Strangelove’ is different. It is basically an edited version of the ‘Blind Mix’ from the limited edition 12 inch single. The Strangelove ‘88 video is the album version, the 7 inch single is an edit of the album version. The 12 inch has the Highjack Mix by Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders and the 3 inch CD contains the Remix Edit, which is an edited version of the Highjack Mix.

@@mickwilson1969 thank you. I knew that there is something in it but I didn't know the correct order. Now it's clear for both songs NLMDA and SL 88. So I have to collect not only 12” 88 but also 7” 88 and CD version 88 :)

Anton Corbijn's approach to videos and his concept is the visual equivalent of Martin Gore's "Gorism" making music that you mention in other reviews, that's why conventional videos don't work with songs, because the strange and unconventional approach fits perfectly with the music ...

The real “See You” video is actually pretty sweet (if a bit corny)-it takes place in a Woolworths and was directed by Julien Temple . :) ETA, Martyn Atkins worked on “Strangelove 88”-it’s not the artistic vision of Anton but I’ve always loved it because the guys look great in it, to me.

I love photos & videos Anton Corbijn made for Echo & The Bunnymen before he started to work with DM. You could say B&W arty, low budget films are very '80's', I guess it all started when Jim Jarmusch's 'Stranger than Paradise' became a cult classic (funnily enough, the film was based on Yasujiro Ozu's 'Tokyo Story', B&W film from 1953).

The American version of StrangeLove music video was directed by Martyn Atkins who also did the music video for Little 15. Also the mix used in the American music video wasn't the single version of StrangeLove (like in Anton's video) but a shorter edit of the extended mix of StrangeLove called "Blind Mix" that was used in the american single released in 1988 in the U.S. Shep Pettibone remixed Behind The Wheel for the extended and the single version. Shep Pettibone was a very high profile remixer back then having remixed songs for Madonna, Paula Abdul or The Pet Shop Boys. Alan Wilder said he hated his mix but I quite like it actually.

Hey Vaughn... Nice video as usual. Anton has been (is) very important in DM's life. He gave them the image they needed. As you say, it truly matched their music. Therefore it gave them a real credibility. Video clips were really important at that time. Did you know that Anton's girlfriend (at that time) appears in the Strangelove's clip ? I grew up with those vids so I didn't have you first opinion of them, but I get it... Those vids were so arty and ahead of their time. Anton has his own vision and feelings about DM's music and he wasn't trying to really match the words, but more the atmosphere of the song. Pimpf's clip is really great... keep in mind that "pimpf" is as german word that meant "youngest of the Hitler Youth".

Hi Vaughn - loving these videos, the behind the wheel remix on the 12 inch was done by Shep Pettibone and I believe that the 7 inch was also done by Shep Pettibone. However, it's a bit confusing because the seven inch remix is uncredited - but it clearly has the same squelchy synth sounds and TR-707/727 (?) drum sounds as on 12 inch remix. There's also a beat masters remix which is totally bonkers.

The Pimpf video is brilliant, but then with such a strange (non single) track Anton could do what he liked anyway! I think the second Strangelove video was done to accompany the remixed Strangelove 88 single, maybe the original video didn't fit. I quite like the second video, I suspect it was pretty cheap as well, seeing that it was all filmed at the University of London's Senate House building, although visually it matches the Black Celebration cover better than the MOTM style!
