Part 10 of an in-depth album review series of Depeche Mode's 7th studio album , "Violator", released on 19 March 1990. In this part we analyse the chords structure, Vocals and production elements of "Waiting For The Night".

The best album ever... You must hear it with headphones in a dark room, only then you will fully be able to understand the depth of their sound... It's sound simply but is not.. Hundreds of sounds are on the back round... Alan we miss you..

Waiting for the Night - the most haunting, beautifully structured track, probably ever! Love how you refer to it as lullaby - put my daughter to sleep every night for 3 years!!

I got into Violator during lockdown 2020. I listened to it during a walk and 'Waiting for the night to fall' made me stop in my tracks. It's haunting and beautiful. You kind of just have to stop and listen when it comes on.

I love listening to this on a walk at night where the world is silent. My favorite part is towards the end at about 5 mins when the extra synth comes in. That whole lead up with the instrumental part is trance inducing!

Very good captured. Once more: whenever I redesign my studio I am using Violator to calibrate or benchmark my mixes. BUT this track is from the audio aspect very underrated as well. I guess I listened to this a hundred times, but I really recomment every fan to listen to this on a stereo setup with a mono speaker in the middle or a really well calibrated stereo studio speaker setup. There is sometinh happening in the mono middle...I was amazed when I recognized this for the first time. Just wanted to share this. THX Vaughn

Probably your best piano improvisation so far. For a self-taught non-musician (as you like to say) your playing is really impressive; I wish I had just 20% of your ability and I could write my songs a lot faster and avoid calling for session musicians doing non rhythmic parts

Nice Vaughn! For me, this song has always been about someone living in the slums, and waiting for nightfall to blot it all out. And the juxtaposition of the beautiful melody is like a synchronicity.

Just another comment to agree with the lullaby aspect - OK, maybe I don't mean the glockenspiel moments - did I miss those here? I mean the downtempo comforting notes. I'm a night owl and this song always resonated with me. ALAN WILDER, WARNING, CREATURE OF THE NIGHT! I like the quiet and monochrome aspects as well as the change in sounds after sunset. And, of course, mystery. Night photography is one of my favorite things. A great addition to the album.

In one very old interview with Depeche Mode, I read that while mixing WFTN, they were inspired by the sound of Tangerine Dream, this is my personal research, more specifically, the Dream Sequence 1985 album, track Tangerine Dream - Rubycon Part One (Excerpt ). This confirms the second fact that from this track was taken a sample for the Recoil track Allelujah, (2007) subHuman - album.

Hi Vaughn, thanks for this new amazing review, I keep watching them. If I am respectfully allowed to say something (but I am sure you already know that and this is not your priority): I can hear some tension in your throat, which is preventing your voice from fully disclosing its character. In my case, after singing only DM, TFF, Spandau Ballet etc at full power in rehearsal rooms for years (they all sort of sing in a similar way), I managed to improve when I started singing quietly in my bedroom. That somehow worked, as I gained more control and texture over my voice, as I had to still be able to sing at a much lower volume, but without stressing my vocal cords. But I am not a teacher, so I do not know what is best for someone else.
@Electromozart3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vaughn, I apologize if my comment was not well received, it was far my intentions to be rude, it's just that I like discussing about music. To avoid any misunderstanding, I did not mean that your vocal skills are bad, I was just being picky. Can't wait for your next video!

Better I'm late than never 😉 when this album came out my generation were already in acid house mode, but I still pumped depeche mode out on my tape player in the car. To make an album that could cut through the drug fuelled noise of a generation, nothing short of genius. Nice to know you're keeping the memories current, feels like a little 90s cuddle. Whereas songs like personal Jesus are more like a drunken snog in the back of a taxi. Can't wait for songs! By the way are you doing any pop up live streams, they're fun 🤞👍........ Alan Wilder
