Hiya, just a quick suggestion about covering a group which has been around since 1979. Cabaret Voltaire which Martin gore has great admiration for! Fantastic electronic music and never deviated away from synths and computers. Great to see you do something on these 2 guys. Cheers

Being a DM fan for many, many years. I wasn’t in love with Clean but now that I’m older I really understand it lyrically and instrumentally what the song is. I miss these days of the band and my life at the time. I’m not one to listen to them constantly but when I go back to listening to their albums I’m always taken back. Even in my own music they are a constant influence. I love watching you recreate the parts of the song.

@Vaughn George, what I wanna say about "Clean". It's NOT a song about drugs. It's more about religion. So there's a conviction in Chistianity (maybe in other confessions too), if you save somebody's life, all your sins are nullifying (reserting). The song describes, what does this person actually feel. And the words "I don't understand - What destiny's planned" mean that he wasn't ready for this sutiation. It's a shock for him, what happend. "I've changed my routine" ect. How it's like to be sinnless? "Clean" is the answer.

Also, I gotta mention, you're right, Clean has to be Dave's song, from all the DM catalogue is the one that fits him the best, although I've seen it from a slightly different perspective. I've always seen that song as kind of ironic, but completely unintentionally, because as we all know, Martin has always stated that he never writes having Dave in mind, he affirms that in most of the cases, the music comes first and then tries to put words on it. Also, I remember I read somewhere many years ago, that at that point, Dave was only doing cocaine, and not so badly that it would become impairing, I remember I read that he became slightly hooked on cocaine at some point during the last leg of the Tour for the Masses, then he chose to move to LA and it's there where he became a full-on drug addict, but that didn't happened overnight, The World Violation Tour became his falldown, and between the end of the Violator Tour and the SOFAD sessions is when the transformation happened. I believe Clean applies to modern Dave, and I believe that's the reason he decided to revisit it on the Playing the Angel era. I wonder if Dave of 89-90 did feel a slight sting when singing that song on the studio and then on the tour, because back then he was anything but clean. I see that song as a kind of a good omen for Dave, although nobody had a way to realize that at that particular moment.

I truly enjoyed this ride! Thank you for your dedication in putting up these videos, I've never been too concerned on the geeky side of the DM discography and certainly your perspective only reaffirms my gut feeling that this is a real masterpiece. Now my answers: 1. Personal Jesus. (I have to agree with you, from the fusion of electronica with americana to the religious and almost blasphemous theme of the song, is definitely a radical and bold statement). 2. Enjoy the Silence. But I feel there are many ways to approach this question, I say Enjoy the Silence because it's the song that has been played almost everywhere since it came out, and for many years I had a resentment towards this song because this one and Personal Jesus would be the songs that non-DM fans would recognize when you mention DM. That made me skip it almost every time I would listen to the album. Now I've grown and I realize this song is just too good and it deserves all its praise. From a more objective perspective, I would pick Sweetest Perfection, and not because I don't like it, but if you ask me today, I feel like it's the least strong from the whole album. 3. Enjoy the Silence. For the reason aforementioned 4. Blue Dress (goddamn I love it so much, the simple song from a simple man singing about something so simple, connects with me in so many levels). Second close, Dangerous (so bad it didn't make it into the album) 5. 10/10 (obvi)

Great conclusion to the reviews, Vaughn! I tend to think the same about Personal Jesus. It's a great track on it's on, quite radical, and a hit single. Album-wise it can be skipped, if you have to lose one. The other big hit, Enjoy the silence, still does it for me and remains the track I've listen to the most by DM in total. :-) 1. And commenting on the music video for the song, I also believe you're completely right. The lyrics and the visuals have nothing to do with each other in there. But I believe that song has a primal feeling (and I believe you also mentioned it at some point in this series) and Anton goes with the emotion that the song gives him, in this case the primal feeling of reproduction, which is what is portrayed in the video. I don't see a romantic aspect there and I don't really see deep emotions or thoughts delivered in the acting, it's merely the sexual compulsion, and if you ignore the lyrics, as Anton often does, it makes total sense. P.S. your impersonations are spot on, that cracked me up.

Q1. Personal Jesus- I agree with your reasons, it is quite unique compared to the other tracks- and yet, it fits within the tracklist. Q2. Sweetest Perfection- This is a great track, of course, yet something about it always sounds unfinished to me, or the parts take too long to build up to the crescendo at the end, or that crescendo needs to be longer, introducing more new melodic parts. I don't know, maybe it is also to do with Martin singing the song on the album in a lower than normal register... Unfortunately, the live acoustic guitar version, where he does sing in his higher solo vocal pitch range, I cannot rate as better than the album version due to not sticking with the electronic sounds. The problem is that if Sweetest Perfection is taken out, WIME to Personal Jesus is just not a good-sounding transition. So, I would have to take out the first three tracks of the album! My solution to get back to nine tracks is to start with Halo, then add Dangerous, then go back to the rest of the album, then add Memphisto and Sibeling. Q3. Policy of Truth/Clean Q4. Halo Q5. 9/10- Yes, yes, how dare I? The truth is that for the first few years I was not super keen on Violator- I saw it as a too radical change from MFTM, a departure from their 'classic' sound, which is basically their 80s sound/the steady progression which you can hear across the albums released in the 80s. I love the album now, but the fact that I have no problem skipping the first three songs now that I have a comfortable alternative tracklist just shows that I am not that attached to it. But most of all, I keep my album ratings in perspective of each other, which I listen to the most, find most awe-inspiring, have no skipable tracks. Black Celebration is 10/10, and I have mentioned before the other two albums which I rate just as highly, but I will wait to reveal the reminder.

I have some 1990 backing tape MP3s (full version). Clean only consists of the constant bass line, some simple drums and also one of Martins sounds (the dark sound, 3rd in this video). In one video of Clean 1990, Martin plays with one hand only and doesn't trigger the "dark" sound.

I can easily see the two of us in a hotel lobby duetting, you, Vaughn on grandpiano, and myself singing, especially the songs that Martin Gore sings (don't take this badly, your voice is beautiful, but you play keyboards a lot better than I do, so it is the only choice). That way I could remember 2005, when I performed Raph's masterful instrumental album My Caress to create my record My Affection (luckily my voice has improved dramatically since then). Maybe I'd release it as a B-side single or something. 3. I've probably played Halo the most. It's catchy. 4. World in My Eyes has grown on me. Love the way Dave sings in it. 5. I'd rate Violator 9/10. Also, Dave also likes to imitate Anton Corbijn's accent when he talks about him; he did it recently during an interview with Chris Black while talking about Imposter. It's pretty funny.

Someone has pointed out that the base line in Clean is inspired by or rather borrowed from Pink Floyd. But that person did not specify the track. It’s “Sheep” from 1977 album “Animals”. Vaughn you should have mentioned it to be fair.

I'm really not a professional, all I can is to talk about my emotions while listening to them. Nothing, I repeat, nothing, except my son, is not such a big part of my growing up like they were/are. I'm so greatfull for living in their time.

Clean should be performed live, if not from Dave, than from Martin. p.s. Can I ask you a question Vaughn? You said that last 4 DM albums are bit of let down about missing melodies, production etc. So, the question is - do you have the same opinion about the songs which Martin sings on these albums? And just another one pop up - do you think / suppose that the basic Martin songs, the rough demos are weaker than 1985-2001 or it's all about production, cutting the melodies etc.

Ah... the questions : 1. Personal Jesus. Though I would add Blue Dress as honorable mention because of its time signature (one of the few, if not the only 6/8 from DM) 2. Personal Jesus... Or Policy Of Truth (shocker alert ! lol)... Back in time, it was PJ... But now, POT is such the "DM" obvious song if you see what I mean 3. Enjoy The Silence... 4. It's a hard choice between Blue Dress and Waiting For The Night... I'll go with WFTN. 5. 11/10 or course... I can't live without a copy of Violator !!!! (nor do I without SOFAD or Ultra by the way.... lol)

Lose a track? Personal Jesus. I fully agree with you. It doesn't quite fit sonically. Dangerous does fit better. I honestly think their later song Precious fits awesomely well. My favourite is ETS. It has been from day one. My favourite version of that is the 2004 Reinterpreted. Halo, Waiting for the night and World in my eyes are other favourites. Violator is my favourite album ever, bar none. Of course It is 10/10.

1-"Enjoy the silence". Probably DM's finest sounding track, but not the best song for me. 2-"Personal Jesus". I do skip it almost every time, should have been in SOFAD, somewhere at the end. 3-"Enjoy the silence", it just happens to be in some playlist. 4-"Policy of truth". Possibly my favourite in this album, it's so noir but not dark. 5-8/10. These days, I prefer SOFAD, vocals are two steps above.
