What do you think of the speed editor then? Who’s got one and using it? Do you hate it? Let me know, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Hey Alex and thank you for the overview. I agree on the amount of angles. Multicam editing using the numerical keys is so much easier on the edit page than using the Speed Editor for those kind of projects. I just got the Speed Editor a few days ago. As a seasoned Resolve user, I was looking forward to bring something new to my editing workflow with the device. I think the Speed Editor is already useful at its current stage, but there are some glaring rough corners and inconsistencies in its functions. I can't remember all of them, but these are off the top of my head after using the device for one evening: 1. I often use a ripple trim in / ripple trim out (one button press) on the edit page. The Speed Editor has the "Trim in" and "Trim out" buttons, but they don't do anything if only pressed once. I would've expected them to perform a quick ripple trim with a single press. They need to be held down and scrolled, which is a shame, but this can hopefully be fixed later. This can be circumvented by doing a split and scrolling back / forward a bit + pressing ripple delete (it's fast and works great). 2. I can say with a high confidence, that the track selection is straight up buggy. The first video track is the only one that works consistently with all of the editing and footage insertion buttons. When you select the second track, a few of the features work differently or don't work at all. And when you go on the third track, all hell breaks loose. Mostly it just jumps back to the second track and performs all functions there no matter how hard you try to single out the third one. All of the hassle can be circumvented by locking all except the desired working layer, but this can be slow and requires the use of a mouse. I would love to have a long press feature on the camera buttons to "lock" the selection to that layer, so the software knows not to touch anything else. Single press would perform a quick selection with all layers in use. 3. The Sync Bin is difficult to utilize when you have only scratch audio on your camera angles and high quality microphones on an external recorder. The Cut Page is so video focused that it only allows to sync one external audio track to the mix, so it would be impossible to cut together an interview with this workflow, for example. Maybe there's a way to work in the cut page with this, but I didn't find a solution. There are more, but can't remember them right now! Maybe I'll make a video review of it myself. Otherwise a solidly made device, a good 7/10 for me at its current stage. Will be a 9/10 if the inconsistencies are fixed and edit page functionality expanded.

@@KaarloMedia Such a great comment and thoughts here. I agree I think it's still a smashing bit of kit right now and, fingers crossed will improve further with a firmware tweak. Could even be possible to introduce a mapping function so that you could remap some buttons to different tasks. Then sell us a new set of button caps for those with bad memories - like me! 😉 Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment.

Just got mine with my copy of Davinci Studio. I had been looking to move on from Corel Video Studio, and in October tried Davinci 16 - free version, was so impressed with that, I decided to upgrade to the Studio, to give access to the GPU accerration and some of the slow speed playback effects. And the free speed editor made it a no-brainer. Still in the steep learning curve part of my experience, but do have the advantage of not having previous work flow habits within Davinci to give the cut page a fair chance. I'll take any tutorials you care to make. Paul

I bought the full size editor keyboard and liking it a lot. I was leaning towards the Speed Editor but it wasn’t in stock anywhere and because I was about to start to edit a long length documentary, I decided to buy the full size editor keyboard. The thing I don’t like about the speed editor is that you need ta keyboard next to it to work properly while it is integrated in the full size BMD editor keyboard. But yes, both BMD editor keyboards are awesome! The jog wheel is great, the dedicated buttons on the left of the keyboard are great too, the Timeline and Source button are a lot more useful that I would thought. My editing is now faster for sure. I did not have the chance to use it with Resolve 17 yet because I am waiting for the software to get out of Beta “mode”. Oh, I forgot...great video Alex, as always! :)

Got it yesterday, trying to get my way around it. Very confusing to change and old, practical and efficient habit from Première, straight to DaVinci and the speed editor. After few hours derushing in the cut page, I can (finally) see the capacity of this tool. One suggestion : Don't give up after 2H, carry on until you really see the tree through the forest !

There’s really no reason to use the speed editor… It’s a big fancy toy. Not that it doesn’t work but if you’re fast with a mouse and you’re good with your keyboard shortcuts… Why do you need it? You don’t. It just slows you down. and I’ll tell you this… If you became an expert with the speed editor I would still be faster than you with my mouse and keyboard shortcuts… Trust me. The speed editor is really the slow editor. It’s a gimmick. Yes it works… But you really don’t need it.

Just got mine. Since I'm new to video editors AND Resolve, I picked up on this tool QUICKLY. It's awesome!! Much faster and better accuracy than the mouse for traversing clips. So glad this came with Studio. Basically a must-have freebie! However, I do have a few design 'gripes' for BMD... 1) Alter the wheel - lighten it (it's like starting and stopping a bowling ball), add some additional turning friction (it's too loose), lose the dimple and add some grip material to the face instead. 2) Change the keys - what's with the 1980s IBM Selectric keys?? Use low travel keys with a slight snap (i.e. ThinkPad laptop). Make keycaps changeable and offer button re-mapping software option so users can personalize/optimize their workflow. Then this sucker would be PERFECT :)

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I've been very pleased with the Speed Editor so far. And feel the suggestions you've made to Blackmagic Design in how to improve the editor are spot on. In the jobs, I normally work on, having more than three cameras would be the exception to the rule--though I suppose I should be hoping that I'd be picking up projects that have more than seven or eight camera views. Any Tutorial on the Speed Editor, maybe needs a tad more info detail, like, if you HAVE to be in a particular Mode "SOURCE" or TIMELINE" Your Videographs are always welcome, and I always look forward to the next one. and having a Dedicated Davinci Speed Editor Playlist would be useful. thanks Alex, for a very informative and clear video. I just got my SE after 6 long weeks of waiting. That is not really cool, and especially, since I equally wanted the Studio version as much as the hardware. For me, I can see no reason why BM wouldn‘t just send out the activation key after you bought the bundle. That should definitely improve. other than that, a new piece of equipment always takes time to get used to it. Being a hobby cutter, not a Pro, I did not work that much in the cut page up to now. That is gonna change and I can see the benefits. ... and yes please, make a detailed review. cheers

Glad that you finally received your Speed Editor. Yeah it’s not great at all. I know that BMD had issues with some component parts and they did put out a public apology a while ago but I agree with you on the bundle and how the activation code is provided. I think they need to consider making that an instant access thing so that people can get on with working in Studio. I do try and feed things like this back and they are very receptive generally. Most importantly enjoy the speed editor and working in the Cut Page. I think it’s a really powerful interface and layout for cutting things quickly and initial layouts. Thanks for watching the video.

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd yeah I actually just bought a bundle, already had the dongle but couldn't pass up the speed editor (and not having to search for the dongle on my laptop). the company I bought from emailed me the serial and I got it in an hour. not sure if thats standard now but hearing that people had to wait that long is weird. but also, I bought my dongle LITERALLY 3 days before the V17 announcement and when I called them and asked for the speed editor they said "its only for new customers" which left me feeling really... bleh, inside. couldn't believe it. 3 days. anyway, yeah they should've given us over ride ability for some hot keys. a dedicated "smooth cut" button? I would've sacrificed that for a SINGLE swappable hotkey. but im using a stream deck with hotkeys next to it so im good.

I would probably consider using it if it would work on the edit page. I use the cut page for very few things. I hope you do a video showing what you can do with it on the edit page. I will be upgrading to the studio version of resolve any day now and so I will be getting the speed editor. I’m very very fast with my shortcut keystrokes on the keyboard and my mouse… Don’t really know if I need this but I would like to play around with it and see.
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Great idea! There is definitely functionality and I'm sure if you have your SE yet you'll have had a play. Things like the transport controls (wheel, jog, shuttle etc) all work so I tend to have it off to the left (right-handed) and allow my left-hand to operate that if I want to. Also the edit commands and trims etc also work. Undo, Snapping etc. I totally get where you're coming from though, about already being quick with keyboard shortcuts. I like that I have options and have definitely started to use the Cut Page more and more for certain projects and processes. Largely sorting through footage and building rough edits. For that particularly the SE absolutely rocks. Also, like the portability of it as when using a laptop I often find that the mouse track pad position and the keyboard make things a little awkward so having the SE out on the road is really nice. Let me know how you get on!

Hi Allen, I am considering getting the Studio version and the speed editor. How do you like the Speed Editor and are you using the Cut page more now that you have the Speed Editor.
@2424rocket3 жыл бұрын
@@swaha55 The only reason I have the speed editor is because I bought the studio version. is the studio version better… yes it is. Especially now with 17.2… It is smooth as butter and Way way better than Premier. Do I use the cut page? Barely ever. What I like about the cut page is the source tape… So I can go through all the footage very very quickly. Other than that I find it pretty useless. Basically it’s final cut 10 with a magnetic timeline. And as for the speed editor… I called the “slow editor“. All it does a slow me down. It’s silly… You don’t need it. But it comes free with the studio version… I do play with it every once in a while… But it’s like playing with a toy. I’m a very very fast editor in the edit page and I use lots of keyboard shortcuts. I love resolve and I love the color page… But as for the cut page… It’s not that it’s bad, but what for? Like I said finding footage and appending it to the end only to get back to the edit page is very OK.

@@2424rocket Hi Allen, Thanks so much for your reply. It is very helpful. Why do you like the studio version better? What features do you use the most in Studio? Also do you have a fast way of zooming in and out? I tried the Close Up key in Cut page but that seemed really buggy in v16. I could not control the framing of the close up with the Dynamic Zoom. It just seemed random as to how you could control the framing of the Zoom. Maybe that was improved in v17. Any tips for things to be careful of when upgrading from 16 to 17? I just started using Resolve about 2 months ago and it is a bit overwhelming after just using iMovie. But so much better. But I have been finding the hard way that there are things to be careful of like where you store your Cache Clip so it does not fill up your hard drive. I film myself teaching yoga with one camera. Do you have any suggestions for how to add more movement by zooming in and out. I was doing this in the Edit page with Adjustment clips and using keyframes with the Zoom parameters but I was wondering if this is the best way for accurate zooming or if there is a faster way. Thank you for any suggestions.

I believe he has some beginners tutorials. Unfortunately most tutorials suck...but there are great ones, you just have to find them. And lastly, get rid of 16. 16 sucks. When 16 was the only option I stayed with Premiere Pro. Then 17 was a breath of fresh air. 17 is way way way better than 16. And never mind the studio version...just get started with the free version for now. As a pro, you need the studio version but for what you're doing the free version is great. "close up key on the cut page" - yikes! That's a gimmick for people who don't know what they're doing. Just use the edit page for now. Once you build knowledge and confidence, then ...well, I'm a pro and I don't use the cut page. Good luck. But watch those tutorials.

Hi how are you? I am reaching out to you because I love how you have explained things on the speed editor. We have just finished filming our feature called Vanishing Knowledge. I am new to Davincci, do you suggest we use the speed editor for a feature film it’s 1hr 50 min long Please let me know Thanks Ejaz
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for reaching out. Congrats on the finishing your feature film!! I think if you're going to use the CUT page in Davinci Resolve to handle the initial pass and go through rushes etc then I think the speed editor would be awesome for that and building an initial edit before moving to the Edit page for more finesse. If you have lots of clips that are back and forth dialogue with cameras that are synced in the Sync Bin (so by timecode or waveform) then it would be very quick to bring a scene together. There is a little learning curve but it's not that steep at all so if you have the time, then give it a try but if you are up against a deadline then I'd suggest not trying to learn something new and adding to your stress level! hope it goes well, do let me know how you get on!

So when my Speed Editor arrived there was a little red battery icon displayed at the bottom right of the Resolve screen beside the home & settings icons. It seems there is an indication for when the battery is low, but only when it's very low. Seems a shame they can generate it in those conditions, yet not have it there all the time. Haven't had a chance to play with it seriously yet, but like what I've seen so far. Is there a Speed Editor manual anywhere on the BMD website. Haven't found it yet...
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I haven't come across it yet in all my time using the keyboard. You're right though, when it is very low that's what other have been seeing too. I'd definitely like it to be more obvious but it does tend to last a long time so maybe not the biggest thing on my improvement list. No manual online that I've found. If I do then I'll add a link in the description. Thanks again for watching

The short but useful editor is in the help PdF that gets installed with Resolve, access it through the help menu. The speed editor is on page 39 or so, talking here from Memory. They explain all the Keys.

Does anyone know why Blackmagic Design won't allow this keyboard to be used with other applications?
@TheBigBlueMarble3 жыл бұрын
I question some of the ergonomics of this device. Square is not a great shape to accommodate the human hand. The camera buttons should be along the top and in a straight line. They most likely chose 9 camera buttons because they imagined users having 10-key experience and therefore modeled it after a 10-key. There needs to be a way of using the dial for multiple purposes. Why not enable the user to flip between using it to scrub through the timeline or make adjustments to lift, gain, etc. on the color tab.
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
I think you make a lot of great points. I’d love to see some more functionality with the wheel. As you say, by hoding down a button and turning allows you to make lift, gamma, gain adjustments. They could easily send out new buttons so that Shuttle, Jog and Scroll can be Lift, Gamma, Gain although you wouldn’t have the ability to push colour like with the trackballs on the colour panels. Still, I think firmware improvements will add to it in due course. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Ordered 2 weeks ago but the thing is on backorder for at least 6 weeks, which is fine but what sucks is they won't even give me the activation code now you have to wait the kit is shipped.
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that sucks. Sorry to hear that. At least the free version still gives you something to work with. Who did you order with, btw? I assume you've reached out to them and double checked they definitely cant send you the activation code. Will they react differently if you say you'll cancel the order to try and call their bluff? Were you still able to get the bundle deal?
@geneanthony34213 жыл бұрын
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd I ordered through B&H and talked to both them and davinci. Both said I had to wait. Oddly B&H said they can probably send me the one with the usb which has a shorter wait which is even stupider since it requires an actual product and it goes out quicker. I also checked with another provider and same issue. Really surprised nobody would work with me on it but it’s a great deal so I’ll deal. I got about another month before I’ll see anything NOTE: The rep from Davinci even said you might be able to look around and get an older version online but you would lose the speed dialer. It's really odd how Davinci doesn't even give you the ability to order through them it's all 3rd party. They really should have had some codes they can send out right now and just send out keyboards later considering it's a known issue affecting every order right now.

is this still true that there is no way to select a clip yet? that's the only thing I been searching for... that doesn't make any sense why this is not possible..
@A1ZUDD1N3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for these vids! am trying to port over from premiere to resolve, but sadly this dosent really work.... - I have multiple scenes to multicam/sync & premiere lets you batch multicam/sync theese scenes. - Also when receiving footage from the producer or dop, all the clips are in one folder, both single cutaways and clips to be multicamed/synced. So again need the batch multicam/sync capabilities. - the jog wheel is cool but often i will need to move it by frames to get a precise cut so that dont really work either. For now d normal keyboard with shortcuts is still the real SPEED EDITOR.... cmon blackmagic make this work.... the speed editor looks cool on my desk and would love to use it! :P thanks for this video again really helped me understand the workflow!!

I would like to know if it's possible to select a single clip in timeline using the Speed Editor in the Cut Page. For example, how can i select a lower V1 clip to split it without split also V2? i know that you can click mouse on clip and the click on Split on Speed Editor, but i would like to know if it's possibile to use only the speed editor in this sense. Last but not least; do you confirm that in-out mark white line selector clips it's only in source clip view and not in source tape view into the cut page? Many thanks!!
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and some great questions. As far as I know, I do not think you can select an individual clip in the timeline, especially in a different track that V1 - I would LOVE to be able to do this with a press down on the wheel or something like that. There may be a workaround that I haven't found yet so if anyone knows then do shout. I don't quite follow your question on the source clip view etc - Can you clarify and I'll try to help.
@AleZakko3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd sure! :D thanks! I mean, in cut page, selecting clips in source clip mode (single clips to view on the left view), if you do an in-out, you see in the thumbnail the white lines in-out. If you do in-out using the source tape view (When you can scrubs all clips as a single long clip), on it's relatives thumbnail clip, you don't see the in-out points. Is that correct?
@AleZakko3 жыл бұрын
Anyway... I rewrite my comment: I love the speed editor, but I still don't understand how to manage audio tracks on cut page because the label is incorrect than the edit page. For example, if you split stereo track to two mono in clip attribute menu, you still see only A1, not A1 and A2 as you can see in edit page. This is a big issue when you do multifamily interview with different microphones or classical concert with more microphones on stage.. Is there a workaround to see also A1 in green clip in cut page? Thanks!!
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Great question. If I’m totally honest...I don’t think that is possible looking at how the cut page is designed to work. If A1 and A2 are linked you should still be able to edit in the Cut Page and then jump into the Edit or even Fairlight pages for more advanced audio editing. Sorry that’s not more helpful. If I find a workaround I’ll let you know.

Nice review Alex, thank you.Just decided to take the plunge - having watched lots of youtube content and being impressed with what people are creating.I was daunted by the apparent complexity of editing but initially a few days ago after research settled for Filmora X and was surprised how easy it was to use.I had Davinci Resolve 9 on my PC but it looked far too complex.I then chanced upon the speed editor and upgraded to Resolve 17 and watched a shed load of videos about the speed editor and bought a new one on Ebay for £160 so waiting for it to arrive - it feels like a whole new interest for me,having been an amateur photographer for many years i have certainly not explored the video/editing world until now but i'm really excited to get cracking with it.It makes a huge difference watching tutorials on youtube as opposed to learning from books which can be quite challenging.Thanks for the useful information and have thumb zupped and sub'd dude !

Glad nobody told Stanley Kubrick that he had to hurry up. I think that’s part of the problem… It shouldn’t be about speed it should be about quality and thoughtfulness and precision.
@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. I think sadly there are just some tasks and processes (and projects) that need to be done quickly, especially with pressures from clients and studios. Hopefully being faster at certain parts of the process will allow more time on the creative and thoughtful aspects of a production.
@badpixelinc3 жыл бұрын
If Kubrick were shooting and cutting on digital media rather than 70mm stock, he'd likely be all about iterations in post. He was an innovator and technology obsessed... and notorious for shooting endless takes. If he had the flexibility to explore countless versions of a cut as part of development, he probably would have exploited that as yet another tool to make the work of his contemporaries look like puke.
@badpixelinc3 жыл бұрын
... Having said that, he probably wouldn't be caught dead cutting on a $200 panel. :)
@2424rocket3 жыл бұрын
@@badpixelinc you are certainly right about the part that he makes most other modern directors look like “puke“. LOL. He was also a genius… If you put any tool in the hands of a genius you get better results than if you put that same tool in the hands of an idiot.

@AlexCameron-Depiqd3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that's been your experience. I must say that I still find Davinci Resolve much more stable in a beta version than a fully released Premiere version. Are you on the beta version or are you using 16? Remember that beta software is the wild west, to some degree, and I am sure a lot of issues will be sorted in the main release. Thanks for watching and commenting though.
