Drones can revolutionize deliveries, crisis response, inspections, and more, with an anticipated 2.7 billion unmanned vehicles in the air by 2026. Currently, the use of drones is limited by operational and regulatory hurdles, one example being the ability of drones to see other aircraft in order to avoid mid-air collisions. Neuron, a startup and recent winner of the Revolution.Aero pitch competition (www.revolution...), aims to solve this problem through distributed ground-based sensor networks.
Neuron makes this possible by the creation of shared airspace zones. These digitally defined spaces ensure safe flight by connecting onboard transponders via ground-based sensors to Neuron to monitor all aircraft flight paths. For aviation to be safe companies must share the traffic information, despite their competing commercial interests. The requirement for the network to be resistant to censorship and to provide accountability for its users led Neuron to use a public distributed ledger.
