Thanks for sharing this! I'm a Floridian, but visited Depot Bay a few years earlier on August 21, 2007.

Why is she calling him an idiot? Uncalled for! Dude was caught in a boat during massive rush of water, who knows how the woman would react in that situation. Unbelievably rude she is

These videos have been a great deal of help in designing the replacement floats. We're building them now at our shop in Anacortes, Washington, and will deliver them in the first week of January. The new, welded Aluminum floats will be much stronger, and will allow future storm surges to flow past without breaking or flipping.

I'm surprised that after all these years, Depoe Bay still has no tsunami sirens or warning system.

It's one Tsunami. These are ripples, just like when a rock is dropped in a lake. They're also very different from storm surge, which seems to be what you're saying.

He couldn't get off the boat to shore. starting a boat in tsunami conditions is inviting disaster, once you cast off your propellors will collect any debris and be damaged and with no way on, you will be subjected to the current. Tugboats have trouble in tsunami conditions, a normal boat wouldn't have a hope in hell.

So just wait until it subsides. Not that hard really. The first few sets are always the strongest, and then it gets weaker as the day (or night) goes on. As long as the dock holds he's fine, once it's safe, fire it up, move to a different spot, voila, no need for the Coasties.

How many times will boaters moor their boats close to shore on that pier when a Tsunami is coming? The boat with the persons on it could have easily moved his boat 40' farther out on the pier or launched and moved deeper into the harbor and had no problems. But he and his ignoramus crew decided to thrash around on the boat and watch the boat smash into the steel pilings. Maybe he wanted to collect the insurance?

I'm presuming that they did realize that the earthquake he mentioned wasn't off the American coastline but the Japanese coastline and that's where the tsunamis are coming from, they were just lucky that the megaquake was only 9.0 magnitude,if that had been a 9.2 or higher things would have been much different on the western American coastline, the tsunami waves could have got up as high as 30ft give or take, dependent on the individual american coastlines geography.

Not necessarily. Earthquakes in the Aleutians (1946) and Messina (1908) were only Magnitude 7.5, but they caused huge tsunamis.
