hey liv! i'm vegan (for moral and dietary reasons) and i would only wear real leather if it was second-hand (eg, thrifted/ passed down) since it gives it a longer lifespan rather than being dumped away! just my two cents :D

I'm not a vegan but I second this! I can understand not wanting to support animal businesses for ethical reasons but if it's already been bought then there's no harm in using it rather than wasting it :)

@@meh5872 Totally agree with this! I'm not personally vegan, but my sister is and feels it's totally okay to wear pre-loved/secondhand leather. In the end, it's always a better option to seek out secondhand fashion rather than purchase new vegan/genuine leather. Leather jackets are super common at all the thrift stores I frequent, so it's not too much of a hassle to find these pieces most of the time :)

i don't buy leather firsthand, but i feel perfectly ok buying secondhand, when used and not just bought to be resold... leather is useful, there is a reason it has been made and used in many cultures for so long, and we ought to use what's already made in a way that doesn't give the original company profits that tell them to make more

I agree completely. I don’t have any problem with keeping my old leather things from when I wasn’t vegan. The only thing with buying second hand leather for me is that it creeps me out a bit haha. Idk about anyone else but that’s just my personal preference. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with buying second hand since it doesn’t fuel the leather industry

The brown dress would look nice if you styled it with some sort of laced up platform boots and maybe a pair of those like gloves that show ur fingers ? The dress rlly reminded me of smth a friend of mine bought, and they styled it similarly to that. I thought it looked really cool, so maybe you could try to emulate smth similar. I have a few vegan friends where one is opposed to leather in all forms due to her reasons for being a vegan (animal cruelty, money to industries that kill animals) however another wants to reduce waste by purchasing thrifted leather that would otherwise go to a landfill. There are also some debates on thrifted leather being better than new synthetic leather due to the plastic in landfills at the end of the lifecycle. Super interesting discussion but its a spectrum and to each their own!

Well I can see why you wouldn’t want it even if it’s second hand just because it freaks some people out I guess (including myself). Like the thought of where it came from and the fact that you’re wearing a dead animals skin. Which is totally understandable lmao. But personally as a vegan myself, I wouldn’t throw away old things of my own that hasn’t worn out yet, just because I think that’s a waste and it’s bad for the environment. However I don’t buy leather second hand at all because it just creeps me out lol. I respect other people’s stand on this though and it doesn’t fuel the cruel industry so there’s no moral argument against it. Hope this helps!
