The only reason EVs are selling to fleet is the tax saving. Take an EV with list price of £50000, they reclaim the vat , and get a hefty discount from manufacturer , so that £50k car could be £42500 with a 15%discount, and without the vat £35500, they can then offset that entire amount against tax in the first year.

Actually 63% of the UK new car market is to the fleet sector. The ONLY thing that matters there is Benefit In Kind Tax. Resale value - doesn't matter, tyre replacement and maintenance - doesn't matter. Nothing else matters other than BIK tax. If you are fortunate to have the choice, why would you not choose an EV that costs you less than £500 per year in tax? I don't particularly like my Tesla, it's not perfect by any means. But the money it saves in tax is impossible to ignore. Over a 4-year business lease alone it will save me nearly £30,000 in income tax. In my pocket. A no brainer.

Lots of people have found themselves financially upside down thanks to the EV cost saving narrative. Frequently, the total cost of ownership for some EVs can even outweigh that of a bona fide supercar, for example: The 2022 Audi E-Tron S has an 83KW usable battery, and costs £64 to fill (public UK rapid charger at 80p KW), and delivers about 190 miles of real world range, or 33p per mile. A Lamborghini Huracán with an 80L fuel tank, costs £112 to fill up (£1.40 per litre), and delivers about 330 miles of range, or 33p per mile. The depreciation costs after 3 years for the Huracan is about 15% (£40k), for the E-Tron S the 3 year depreciation cost is about 60% (£60k) Slight road tax reduction for the Audi but insurance costs for the two cars is broadly similar for many. Replace 'E-Tron' with (bank balance) 'Taycan' for a true horror show... losses in excess of £60k in ONE YEAR.

Why anyone would buy a car brand new, ev or otherwise is beyond me. Absolute waste of money
@andrewchirgwin41368 күн бұрын
If you bought a used model for £25,000 and after a year the batteries started to fail the cost of replacing them would be unaffordable. The cost is therefore £25,000 for a year's motoring then you have to find another, there is not even any scrap value, you would probably even have to pay for recycling. Marvellous.

OK if you say so, maybe with Audi, but let me tell you now, a New A5 TDI engine will bankrupt you as well! Our EV, 210 Miles range, New battery.......£5500 suck on that!

And the batteries are updated to higher charge rates every year or so, making any EV of a 4 years old, quite outdated!! So you'd be buying basically the battery, as the car is worthless and that battery will slowly die and be unusable within 5 years. Then you pay £25,000 for a new battery on a car that's depreciated down to £12,000 say! ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS!! I was slowly coming around to the idea, that EV's may be a good option in 8 to 10 years time, but I cannot see that now.

I took the programming tool for my car and turned it off in my vehicles including the stupid, nagging seat belt warning! All theses beeps and warnings have gotten ridiculous over the years. I think the only warnings most people need is when you leave the headlights on leaving the vehicle or backing up into an obstacle.

I have a Mazda BT50 Ute (Rebadged Isuzu) with an agricultural 3 Litre Diesel. It weighs 250kgs less than the Audi, cost less than one-third of the Audi in 2021 and is worth 58% of purchase price with a whopping 79,000 miles on it compared to the Audi. For intercity running it gets 1,100km or 683 miles per tank meaning I can easily go from Brisbane to Sydney. I am not against EVs or new technology but hell, they have a bloody long way to go to match an older ICE vehicle let alone a modern efficient one.

Good review , here in Sydney (aus) I have been researching secondhand Tesla 3 in the local Carsales . And they are not selling , some cars have been advertised for over six months , and if you go into price insights they are dropping price every month , I reckon if you offered them 5-10k less than advertised price you might get a bargain. Or maybe not , take care Mate

Depreciation doesn't matter at all. 63% of the new car market is to corporate/fleet sales. What matters to those user / choosers is BIK tax. That's it. Nothing else matters. BIK tax on my Mercedes E350d was c.£7,500 per year. The Tesla MY Long Range costs £480 per year in income tax. Over a 4-year business lease, that's very nearly £30,000 saving in tax paid. Two holidays in the Caribbean thank you. I love EVs 🤣

Luxury brand or not, you would need to be an idiot with too much money to spend £75k for an EV with less than 350mi range. Most luxury EVs are not designed for efficiency. They weigh too much and have the aerodynamics of a brick.

My little BMW i3 cost less than £10k, it weighs not a lot, it has a range more than that Audi, cost zero to Tax, is fun to drive and comfortable. The thing is this.. if you want to spend stupid money on the latest and greatest then you have an issue. Don’t bang on about depreciation, you let someone else take the hit.

I don’t know at what point the lease companies wake up and start to realise this by way on increasing the money payments on it from new to make up for its respective value at 3,4,5 years etc. it seems atm the payments are quite low for high value EV’s but they are worth nowt after this time. The manufacturers won’t be taking the hit for much longer surely? If the payments go up the leases will dry up, then it’ll really begin to unravel.
@Aussiemarco8 күн бұрын
In 10 years from now, some poor sap will buy that for £5,000 thinking “I can’t believe how clever I am getting this so cheap!!! Luxury, me!” Then 3 months later it stops charging and needs a new battery for £50,000.

Assuming solid state batteries come in with 600 mile range and 10 min charge, every single EV with older battery technology is worthless.

How you will get the charger to deliver 200 kWh to your 600 mile EV in ten minutes needing 1.2 MegaWatts in Tesco's carpark, taking four times the load of the whole supermarket is a matter likely to delay that day for a while. Presumably a few GigaFarads of flux capacitors will soon sort that issue under the shiny Labour Government.
