Just bought a $30 split diopter, had no idea it was such a simple effect to achieve. Think I first saw it in a Hitchcock film then saw it at the cinema in Cape Fear, the shot in the video above. It was amazing to see on the big screen, Nick Nolte's face absolutely huge in closeup with Jessica Lange sharp in the background. Like they say used sparingly it's such a great device. Thanks for the tip!!!

These videos are extremely well made, and I appreciate the effort it takes to make your points clearly, concisely and - most impressively - simply enough for the lay person to understand. This is a very hard ballance to strike. Sometimes of course, it does result in oversimplification - in this case, talking about deep/shallow focus as simply an artistic choice, not a technical hurdle to overcome. But without going into light-sensitivity, aperture and focal length, it is hard to explain why you might not be able to achieve deep focus on a certain shot (or be shallower than you'd like). You also didn't go into the effects different focal lengths have on the same kinds of shots - the inaccurately named "lens-compression". Maybe an upcoming episode?

For Star Trek the mouton picture Robert Wise used the split diopter giving two bridge crew (one near, one far off) both in crisp focus and a really weird blurry line between them. It was visually noticeably different but I only found out why recently. Tilt shift I discovered as a filter on Instagram - use two fingertips to decide the angle and the width of the line of the photo you want in focus and it blurs the rest automatically!

Studio binder took the spot that had @everyframeisapainting I really like this video. I was thinking of the rack focus in There will be blood, in the ocean sequence. Daniel’s brother is in focus, then focus racks on Daniel that goes away for a swim. It’s a very particular rack focus because even when the picture is soft, you can guess that something is wrong. Maybe because the brother is so calm and Daniel moves like a devil
