Little known fact regarding longer lenses creating a thinner depth of field: using a shorter focal length lens of the same aperture, but moving closer so that your subject is the same size in the frame, the depth of field is the same!

After owning a dslr for 4 years now and after the struggle for knowlege about photography, I finally understand everything and this gentleman right here just gave you, me and everyone a $1,000 workshop advice. I have watched thousands of videos, bought digital and physical book for photography etc but none has helped me except for this amazing guy. For anyone reading this, I am telling you, all of what he said in here will elevate you from amateur to professional if you actually absorb what he said in this video. Thank you for making this free and available for everyone. This video also eliminate the mind of amateurs who keep thinking " I dont have the best camera that is why I suck, I need to buy a new one " you can literally do this to any camera cheap or high end today. DSLR or mirrorless or snapchat cameras, if you understand this video, you can take amazing photos in ang camera you have.

Yes certainly learning how to use any camera to its very best capabilities is best practice. I always notice Simon has the very best camera equipment so there is something to be said having a most feature rich device if a high standard of photography is your goal. On the other hand, how did the photographers manage 20, 30 or even 50 years ago to produce great images?

I learned about aperture as a kid this way: Make a fist and leave a small opening and look through the opening at something in the distance. What you're looking at will appear sharper than if you weren't using the "fist viewer." Now gradually widen the fist opening and you will see the object in the distance become less sharp.

Hi Simon! Love your channel and the way you explain things. One small remark: the aperture is the FOCAL LENGTH/diameter of the opening of the „hole“ not the length of the lens/diameter. But the explaination is perfect.
@simon_dentremontАй бұрын
Thanks for that! Actually, even more accurately, the diameter measure is from the entrance pupil, rather than the diameter.

Thanks !! This clears up a lot of questions I have about aperture. I'm using a 70-300mm lens with Fstops 4.5-6.3 in mildly low light to get morning pics of hummingbirds at the feeder that hangs in the shade of a large tree behind my house. Distance from camera to subject is about 25 feet. The pics come out pretty good but not super crisp like I would like them to be. I'll try experimenting with smaller apertures to see what happens !

When I use Aperture priority, we do the work around to use for instance a set 200 ISO. We can do this on both the Nikon D5300 and the Sony A73. This helps alot when I am using Aperture priority but the ISO is higher then I want and it truly changes the sharpness on the image without the noise! High ISO settings tend to be noisy on both cameras when it gets set too high in the priority mode. Its a great work around to improve the image quality. If you set the ISO too low to work with the aperture set on priority mode, it simple won't take the picture. So its a practice shot before using it at times. Well work using and my husband was setting up both cameras the other day with this......I got the clearest Raven shots and a very far off eagle shot as well. So to confirm, the cameras both set the shutter speed only by doing this.
