The cop went in to check if the man was ok, the neighbour hadn’t seen him in a few days. The house looked pretty well looked after, which would indicate he is looking after himself and his home. The cop knocked on his door and heard a clear “who is it?”, followed by “get out of my house, I have a gun” If we ‘articulate the facts’ as a cop is supposed to do, well looked after home + clear and concise trespass warning by the homeowner, it is safe to deduce that the homeowner is actually okay and not in need of emergency care. Instead the cop decided that instead of listening to the homeowner and leaving the house, that she would take up a firing position and wait for the armed homeowner to exit the bedroom before murdering him, then claiming he was a threat and she “feared for her life”. If she had left the house at the homeowner’s request, he would not have been a threat.

I had my collar bone (clavicle) broken by officers doing a welfare check. I was not cooperating,, they took me to emergency room allegedly for mental evaluation. I was in pain and told the hospital staff that. Basically the officers were trying to do their job but decided because I was not cooperating they would use pain compliance by raising my cuffed arms up. High enough to cause a radial fracture of my clavicle. Welfare checks are always risky both for officers and the citizen. 1 I should not have resisted being dragged from my house against my will. That is not wise but a normal person who did not break any laws is going to resist. 2 The officers did not listen to me. 3 while the person who called them did so with honest concern the officers did not do an investigation they decided no matter what I said they were going to take me based off of that person's concern. 4 The officers who I do not hold any hard feelings against were trying to do what they thought best. I do not feel they tried to break my clavicle They just tried to cause pain to get me to comply with being taken against my will. Honestly I was safe in my home and posed no threat to myself or others but they felt they got a call and could not risk it. My anger at them being in my house was misplaced at the time but that again is part of the problem with these welfare checks. That officer should have left when told to,. She had no reason to stay and when she heard he was armed went into escalation/ self preservation mode. Had the officer just left the man would have probably called 911 and been told it was an officer but he did not know that. This tragedy is proof that officers lack critical thinking skills and always resort to force or escalate rather than back away. The officer didn't know he was hard of hearing and assumed he was threatening her.. so her thoughts from that point on were affected off that bias. It is an ongoing issue. More departments are training officers to respond for mental health issues but we see here that it does not have to be a check for that reason. Officer tried doing the right thing but at the moment she heard he was ok her purpose for being there was over.

I hope there will be some sort of redress for the family. This officer did soooooo many things wrong, she caused this whole situation., and since the department says this is okay, they all need to be retrained or fired.

Whoever asked for a welfare check never dreamed that a sheriff could act so irrationally. I see it all the time on KZbin, where people assume treating cops like normal human being couldn’t possibly escalate into something horrific in no time flat.

maybe the neighbor knew exactly what could happen. who is to say that the garage door had been open for two days. nothing like a violent death in a home to lower the price.

Even most criminals take off running when they hear someone inside of a home that they don't belong in. What do cops do? Pull out a gun& get ready for fun.

If I ever feel suicidal, I hope Deputy Castillo will oblige me as "diligently" as she does this poor resident! Was it her poor training or her endless stupidity and belligerence that drove her to making mistake after mistake and NOT to withdraw from the residence after she confirmed her "wellbeing check" told her to leave his premises.

Friend of mine got welfare-checked to death. His family hadn't heard from him in a few days, so they called in a welfare check. When police arrived he was in his room with his headphones on and didn't hear them. His file had a "mental health" note on it, so when they entered, they had guns drawn. When they entered his room, he was self-medicating with pot brownies and had a knife in his hand. He turned, still wearing headphones, at the sudden entry of police with guns drawn and they opened fire. They fired 11 times, hit him six times and themselves twice. His spine was instantly shattered and he was made quadriplegic on the spot. As he lay in hospital, police visited him and told him if he sued them, they'd charge him with attempted murder of police officers and he'd get get to recover in a poorly-equipped prison hospital waiting for trial. He survived for two years as a quadriplegic before dying of pneumonia, the usual fate of quadriplegics. After he was safely dead and the police couldn't go after him, his parents sued the police and got $7 million.

Good job with this video. I was also thinking why not wait for backup, but the more important part that I missed, which you clearly pointed out, was that the officer backed herself into a corner. Thanks, as always for your excellent videos.

I've been on the receiving end of "Wellness Checks" on numerous occasions thanks to out of state relatives of my dad. They abused it monthly for MONTHS. If my dad wouldn't answer his phone ONCE they would call the police. From 6AM to as late as 3AM. Even though the police knew that there was someone with him 24 hours a day, they still demanded entry. More than once after literally standing next to a window TALKING to him and him being in full view. All because my disabled dad chose to live with me instead of them. (Wonder Why). It didn't end until I started making complaints to the chief and filming them when it happened.

IT seems that the ignorant officer would have immediately went downstairs and outside as the man clearly speaks and stands his ground isn't that good enough to prove he's ok I stead of hunkering down to murder him.

So you mean to tell me that this man survived to retirement being an officer, living his BEST LIFE, holding on to the memories of his wife. Sleep IN HIS OWN HOME and killed by a cop who should have had dispatched called or something because a garage door was open. THE NEIGHBOR GOT HIM KILLED. SHE SHOULD BE JUST AS GUILTY!

Very sad. You know this family has "backed the blue" their entire life, just to have one of them kill their father on a well being check. They can justify killing anybody anytime, even in your own home. I'm curious how this played out.
