The amount of bruises, cuts, and broken bones these people must have gotten over the years is kind of concerning. He took a (blunt) throwing spear straight to the inner thigh, that had to have left a nasty bruise. And those hits to the head with the pole hammer must've been nasty.
@countervolition

@AJWhite-qi3jo I feel like after a while you get used to it and start to enjoy the pain and adrenaline (except for obvious injuries), blood memory kicking in. One of the only times you get to experience that "blood rush" in the modern age.

It’s no drawn out cinematic “so be it” kind of end. It’s a savage, swift, and frightening crunch of a rondel into the neck or armpits. It’s disturbingly non-personal. No monologues, no emotions, no deliberation. I love honest, real combat, because real men have died this way. It’s not romanticized, it’s terrifying.
@dequitem
@dequitem 13 күн бұрын
It's much more personal than you think, even when you can't see and hear him under the helmet, because you can feel the muscles work under the armor of your opponent and how he is struggling to block you.

In real life, we will probably see that it looked like what it does now on the street via getting jumped or mugged with a knife or baseball bat or crowbar. Armor changes things, but by how much? If it was on the battlefield, or a personal duel, at least you knew it was coming. I wonder how often knights or trained rogues and soldiers in everyday society would simply jump one another with a bladed or blunt weapon, unarmored, most often. That would be brutal, perhaps quick or not, and not very romantic. No background sound track. Would look like a street gang fight unless arranged otherwise. Can't imagine the violent societies that the illiterate men at arms, peasants and even knights and lords were part of were all that different and intellectual. Probably just the opposite. Street knowledge.

It is interesting to me how many of these "kills" end up with both fighters on the ground in a rolling brawl. I must imagine that in a large battle, this would be less likely, as it might not be so exciting to give up your standing position with enemies very near you -- to get down on top of your opponent to drive a dagger through him with your full weight. So, did that mean someone knocked down in a larger battle was less likely to be finished off with a "dagger kill shot"? Or finished off at all? Any thoughts on this?

Knocking out sparring partners is stupid, but as if you hadn't already outdone yourself you went and double tapped him afterwards? Why does anyone train with you?

Of course, knockouts and knockdowns look brutal and dangerous, and they are, but it is the stabs in the gaps of the armor that are really painful.

Damn makes you imagine most medieval battles in an open field ending in primarily just a bunch of knights one on one trying to stab each other in the neck making it look all the more gruesome yet realistic. Wish movies would show that, would make battles more personal than just about the carnage.
@laisphinto6372

highly doubt that remember duels arent battles, in battles you have roles, signals and formations so anyone going rambow will get bulldozers by any formed up infantry gets killed

Awesome scenes but seeing this does make me worry about CTE since it looks like you take a lot of shots. The gladiator showed some great wrestling and its great to see both you and your opponents show the humility to let the other person work instead of justing trying to win every time.

Are there historical accounts of both duelists dying when they go to the ground stabbing each other with daggers? I can imagine with adrenaline rush you stand up over your defeated opponent and collapse as you walk away.
