It’s no drawn out cinematic “so be it” kind of end. It’s a savage, swift, and frightening crunch of a rondel into the neck or armpits. It’s disturbingly non-personal. No monologues, no emotions, no deliberation. I love honest, real combat, because real men have died this way. It’s not romanticized, it’s terrifying.

In real life, we will probably see that it looked like what it does now on the street via getting jumped or mugged with a knife or baseball bat or crowbar. Armor changes things, but by how much? If it was on the battlefield, or a personal duel, at least you knew it was coming. I wonder how often knights or trained rogues and soldiers in everyday society would simply jump one another with a bladed or blunt weapon, unarmored, most often. That would be brutal, perhaps quick or not, and not very romantic. No background sound track. Would look like a street gang fight unless arranged otherwise. Can't imagine the violent societies that the illiterate men at arms, peasants and even knights and lords were part of were all that different and intellectual. Probably just the opposite. Street knowledge.

It is interesting to me how many of these "kills" end up with both fighters on the ground in a rolling brawl. I must imagine that in a large battle, this would be less likely, as it might not be so exciting to give up your standing position with enemies very near you -- to get down on top of your opponent to drive a dagger through him with your full weight. So, did that mean someone knocked down in a larger battle was less likely to be finished off with a "dagger kill shot"? Or finished off at all? Any thoughts on this?
