aka by the first line "Es war einmal ein treuer Husar" - Traditional German Folk & Soldiers' Song. Originally sober in melody & lyrics, the first verse was rebranded & appropriated by the "Karneval" revellers of Cologne in 1929. 1. :| 6. "Grüß Gott, grüß Gott, Herzliebste mein! Was machst du hier im Bett allein?" |: "Hab dank, hab Dank, mein treuer Knab'! :| 11. Wo kriegen wir sechs Träger her? :|

Thank you for this video. I originally heard the song in Paths of glory and was blown away by the beauty of the song (and I can’t speak a word of German) a song that truly breaks language barriers. The translation was great, and I was quite amazed at how it more often than not rhymes in both Germans and English (you can see the link between our languages) My deepest respect for Germany. My Grandfather worked in both east and west Germany and loved the country. Him and my grandmother both speak fluent German (her name is Eva so she even has a German name)

Although I am an Arab and do not understand the German language, translating it is painful and I am sad about what happened. The West used to have a long history and a culture of determination, and now it has become strange. You see a man saying that he is a woman and you see some people saying that they are dogs. What happened is really strange. I hope that this great culture returns.

It took me a while but I realised that the hussar isn't talking about an actual girl but he's talking about the "death of Brunswick" since napoelon took over. the black robe and black hat represents the uniform of the brunswick hussars who wear it to "mourn" their homeland.

Fun fact: This song is also known in Czechia, but the Czech lyrics have nothing to do with the German original, they're more like a parody. They were written by Jiří Suchý, a comedian and songwriter. His version is called "Vesnická romance".

Czechs and Germans lived together peacefully for centuries within the Holy Roman Empire and later under the Danube Monarchy. They influenced each other culturally. Prague was even the capital of the empire for a time. Prague's famous buildings date from this period. It was only with the rise of nationalism at the end of the First World War that this symbiosis broke apart. What followed was bitter hostility that ended in war and expulsion.
