The European catfish or river catfish (Silurus glanis) is the largest pure freshwater fish in Europe. It is also the only European species from the catfish family. It inhabits and prefers large rivers and lakes with muddy bottoms. The linguistic root of the catfish's name is traced back to the word whale - it was probably seen as a small freshwater whale.
The head makes up more than 20 percent of the total length - depending on their habitat, catfish naturally reach a body length of up to three meters and a weight of around 150 kilograms. The catfish is the largest fish in Europe that permanently lives in freshwater and can live up to 100 years.
The catfish is listed as a protected species in the Bern Convention.
You can also see roach or rudd, perch and sturgeon or sterlet.
