It's funny, seeing you make the errors that I've seen new ground staff make on the real railway for years. Gives me a little chuckle to see that it happens here as well. The buffer-up at 13:00 is what I'm mostly referring to. Ordinarily, you'd stop 2ft away from the stationary set and then release the train brake. As the brake slowly rises (which doesn't really happen in the game, in real life you have to wait for the pressure to build. It won't even rise equally through the train, so as SOME of the wagons' brakes start to come off you make the move.), you give the train a shove onto the standing set as the brakes slowly start to release. When the buffers make contact, apply the train brake, but you keep some power on the locomotive and compress all the buffers very gently. Then you throw in the loco brake to hold everything in position and drop the power off.

You don't have to validate the job before preparing cars for departure. You could have easily saved a lot of time by preparing the cars for departure first and then starting those jobs - it still counts. Also job numbers from paperwork are also on cars so you don't have to visually check if you've got the right ones

I personally make the train ready, start moving and jump out of the engine, then validate the jobs and hop back on (yes this is not the safest methode and any railcompany who reads this will never hire me at all, but I saved time) sometimes I even hop off when arriving so I can set switches correctly, which is even worse haha

It actually says on the cars which job they belong to. The job number will be written on the car. This way you can be 100% sure which cars to attach and you can save a lot of time by attaching those cars before you hand in the job.

I think my problem with this game is that in ETS2 you can whack music on and realistically cruise to your destination. You know your fuel, can cruise control the speed, know how to take the corners when you approach them and fatigue very rarely creeps up on you if you manage it beforehand. I can just switch off and it does my mental health wonders. With Derail Valley I could guarantee you that i'll either be on my side on a grass verge within 15 minutes, or i'll have beaten myself up over a shunting job that has given me a headache. Might have to stick with watching Squirrel handle it like a professional!

You can just put the game in casual difficulty to get more base money from the jobs and don't worry about the time bonus, and when you get the big diesel, its so powerful you don't have to worry about hills or overheating and just drive at like 40 all the way only slowing down for the real sharp turns, I did a 10 job haul to 3 yards yesterday and took me 2 and a half hours to complete it.

You should try to use mostly the independent brake to arrest your speed rather than the train brake, and only use the train brake a little to supplement the independent brake. The train brake takes very long time to release after you apply it so if you over apply it, you'll lose a huge amount of speed. When coming down that particular hill near the Harbour I always use 1-2 notches of train brake to keep the speed from getting out of control and then fine tune it with the independent brake. It's a lot easier to control your speed like that.

Thanks, Squirrel! I got Derail Valley on watching this video. As you say at about 36 minutes in, it's not the gfx but actual gameplay which makes this such a great game. It is fun and gets you thinking like a RL shunter or Yard Supervisor, thinking about what wagons go where for the train journey etc. There is far more to the railway than often seems apparent!

on the station map the coloring underneath the yard letter (like B yard at harbor has the green under it) means the type of yard, green is Military, Yellow/Orange is general freight and blue is passenger station, also, when starting on a hill (11:00) you ALWAYS throttle up before releasing the brakes, that is standard hill start procedure. Another thing is that you can "safely" go through every corner in the game somewhere around 10-15 over without issues

Just done a shunt job that was only 4 flatbeds to be loaded for outgoing, but it involved 2 flatbeds together with a different job in the way, 1 separate flatbed with 2 different jobs in the way and the last 1 was in a siding on it's own. I moved everything out of the way and put all four in the loading bay before hitting the validator to start the job. Apparently the 36 minute job only took me 5 minutes to finish and get the bonus!

One trick you can do before you get the remote is to use the brake valves on the ends of the cars to hold the train while you're coupling up. Leave the hoses undone, open the valve on the "active" part of the train to dump the air and put the train brakes on, then do up the coupling, attach the hoses and align the valves as normal. You can also set the train rolling from the engine when you're shunting, then go to the rearmost car and use the valve to set and release the brakes to slow down or stop, just open the valve for a second or two to apply some brake, shut it again to release. The longer you leave it open, the more air you let go, the stronger the brakes come on and the longer it takes to release. Takes a little practice, but you can have some pretty fine control that way, just don't forget to cut the power before you jump off the loco.

I like to hook up a second de2 either in the middle of the train between jobs or at the end and I set the air off and reverser in neutral. When I get to my drop off location I fire the other shunter up. This allows me to break apart the jobs quicker and if you're really fast with the teleport simultaneously drive them two separate locations of the yard.
@Electricfox
@Electricfox 4 жыл бұрын
What I'd like to see is unfitted goods jobs. The caboose/brake-van would come into its own with these since you'd need to rely on the handbrake in the brakevan and on the wagons to stop the train from running away down steep slopes. So you'd have to stop before a downhill section, pin on some of the handbrakes on the wagons and then work with the handbrake and loco brake to control your speed. It would also open up the potential for fly/hump shunting, where you decouple the wagon, and then push it up to speed with your locomotive, slam your loco brakes on and the wagon carries on into the siding, you then have to run after it and put the brakes on before it slams into another wagon and derails. Would add a whole new level of difficulty for the game.

pro tip always make sure the train brake is hooked up even when doing yard work, i dont know if the game works like this but in real life if you dont check in your train come to a stop after about an hour of "absence" and if your train is under power the independent will not be enough to stop it, it will help if you have a runaway train

You know already you can see the job register (right-up code, lettering and the also the car register) I believe, doing that, you prepare everything, really, couple everything and put the hole consist ready to go and just validate when you´re leaving. And again when you starting the game without remote-control, when you shunting and preparing, you can brake a long consist by opening the last car valve little bits ( you get the hang of it by training) so it´s killer faster to beat time very easy. have fun;

So... I've seen quite a lot around the Derail community say you can't make it out of Harbor and Town carrying over 400 tons with the Shunter loco... I'd like to say that you can actually because I pulled 457 tons with 1 shunting Loco up the hill towards steel mill to get to Goods factory... took 1/4 tank of sand but once I had enough friction, you can cruise around 45-50 km/h and have enough power to do it despite 57 tons overweight. I hauled in a nice 60k in profit from the 2 jobs lol

You should have coupled the car racks first behind the locomotive. So when you get to where you need to set them down, you stop the train with the junction you need to change under the car wagons, uncouple from the container flats and roll forward to clear the junction, then change and propel back into the siding where you're dropping off the car racks, that way you aren't wrestling with the entire mass of the train as you reverse and try to neatly stop, you're only pushing around the mass you absolutely need to.

I realise this is a bit of a late comment- but you can easily and accurately identify the consist that you want to take, before handing the job in for validation. The job number (ie. GF-LH-76) will also be on the carriage identification plate, so you can actually hook up the entire consist, and get it moving in the correct direction for departure, then validate the job to maximise the chances of getting the time bonus

Nice run. I assume you recorded this before update 81?. In that they changed quite a few things to make it more clear that early game it's actually better to remotely repair/fuel as in that case the copay picks up part of the bill. To be even more efficient: ditch the loco at the destination and grab another for the next job, repeat until you are required to pay fees before any more jobs can be accepted. Then you pay the fees on all locos at once at the office and only pay the copay amount...

Ive been doing alot of concurrent jobs in this lately and luckly more often then not my whole consist goes into the same siding.... its just that siding is either too short or already occupied so i either have to punt the current stock out so it over hangs the yard so my stuff fits or relocate it... it can be a bit annoying at times lmao

If you're 90% sure which wagons you want, could you not arrange the consist before handing in jobs at all?

It might have been quicker to have the empty cars up front stopped before the points unhooked the box cars pulled forward the switched points then backed in the shorter train uncoupled, turned in job the hook up the box cars then carried on.

Good work as usual though the shunters are kinda dull to watch. The 2-8-2 would allow you to haul heavier loads while being more fun to watch. The steamer is this games party piece. Love watching your vids!
